Sorry lads, but it's clear to all that our greatest fear has come to pass: the prequels were actually better.
The reason for this is simple. The prequels, unlike TFA, had actual identifiable moments of intense drama and emotion, moments when the viewer was deeply invested.

>Monologue by Yoda at the end of Ep. 2 about the all consuming power of the dark side, etc.
>Lots in Ep. 3: Anakin's fall, Order 66, Palpatine's speech establishing the Empire, etc.
None of this was to be found in TFA. The grand moment in the thermal oscillator felt mechanical, and the viewer is distracted the entire time by the ignominious miscasting of Driver as the villain--it's hard to be afraid of someone so dorkish, ugly, and weak looking. There's also no buildup of their relationship. Viewers just have to take it on the writer's word that Solo and Kylo had some kind of prior bond since there's no attempt to show it.
Cold; calculated; mechanical. These words characterize TFA. The prequels may have been clumsy and amateurish, but at least they had genuine emotion amidst the goofiness.
