Why was this film so successful? I don't think there would be much hype if it was released today.

It's still not the best Titanic movie.
Marketing, word of mouth, attractive leads, historic event everyone knew about, hit song, love story, action, something for everybody in it. If I had to guess.
I agree though, it wouldn't have been as successful if made today, audiences' tastes have shifted from the kind of 90s appeal Titanic had

This film was all about moving from the old to the new. The focus was really on the characters and their introduction.
I think 8/9 will be heavier content wise since we've got that and nostalgia out of the way now.

After seeing The Force Awakens and Kylo Ren (Ben Solo), I was really reminded of Anakin Skywalker which I assume is intentional.
I haven't seen the prequels in a while and watched AOTC and ROTS again last night. I dug ROTS and still don't like AOTC, but I was thinking about Anakin. Why do people hate on Hayden Christensen
but find Adam Driver so acceptable. I really didn't think Hayden was bad as Anakin, I was actually surprised by it. I know we all say the dude was wooden, but I think he shines in a lot of scenes. There are some quieter moments to his performance that I think go unappreciated, pic related being one of them. He has good chemistry with Ewan Mcgregor and, I dunno, he doesn't seem very bad?

Gotta say, I don't hate the guy like a lot of you do. I think with better writing and a director he would have been top notch, they all would have been. I like his Anakin Skywaller.
How come people are giving Kylo Ren slack but not Anakin when Driver does pretty much the same shit?

But still, overall I don't think the guy is terrible, hence the thread. Mark Hamill in the Original Trilogy is nothing to right home about, especially in the first one and Empire. Yet his Luke Skywalker is one of my favorite characters.

And about the movie, it's was a good movie to me, how the guys mindbattle the ants and viceverse, but the girl fucks up everything, as usual in women.

I was fine with her beating up those guys in the town, she had a weapon she knew how to use and she wouldn't have survived that long if she didn't know how to handle herself
I was fine with her getting pissed about the handholding, she knows the area better than he does and it makes sense for Fin to be naive and think he's her white knight
I was fine with Fin falling for her instantly, stormtroopers are probably insanely sexually repressed.

My personal feelings are at this point she seems very much a Mary Sue character because she can do things that we have not seen her do before, and it seems she's just picking them up like they're nothing.
