For Vader, his suit was necessity - he could not survive without it. He needed it.
For Kylo, his costume (mask, cape, lightsaber to a certain degree) - is an image that he wants to project. He has in his head an idea of what true Dark Side warrior should be like and that example is Vader.
In that scene when Hux comes in while Kylo and Snoke are having a discussion, you see how uncomfortable Kylo gets - he is painfully aware that he is NOTHING like Vader. He is aware of Vaders weakness - sentimentallity. He feels the same pull towards the Light (new concept, in PT and OT we always had heroes who were tempted by the Dark Side while in TFA it`s played out in reverse) but he doesnt want to accept that as he knows that is why the Galactic Empire fell.
When Kylo is talking to Vaders helmet he mentions how he feels tempted by the Light.

Also, I want to add: the reason Rey and Finn were able to stand their ground against Kylo Ren is this:
Force-Users are no longer sword wielding ninjas like in the prequels. No more jumping 50 feet in the air. No more single-handedly taking down entire platoons of enimes at a time.
This interpretation of Jedi/Sith is more in line with how they were depicted in the OT: space wizards with swords. The PT is still canon, they just aren't acknowledged or referenced.

I suppose part of the lore reasoning for that would be that there isn't really anybody left to give proper Jedi training after Order 66, and especially now that any Jedi surviving that are now dead. Luke himself never even had formal training, and he's the only surviving link to the Jedi order.

I saw the movie a second time today (I went with my family, the first time I went to the premier alone. Definitely will not see it again in theaters.) and I have to say, I really appreciated Kylo Ren's character more as a result.
The first time around, I thought Adam Driver made him look pretty pathetic without the mask, but now I realize that was the whole point. He needs the mask and the special lightsaber because he wants to be seen as some dark, evil image, something like Vader. But in reality, he is so much further from that. He's just an edgelord. He's barely anything like his grandfather, and he knows that.
I noticed in the scenes without his mask, up until the saber fight, it looked like he was always about to cry. As if he had no confidence in himself, and that he's trying to be something he knows he isn't, but is completely ignoring that because of what Snoke is telling him.
In fact, from a cinematic standpoint, it's clear that they're trying to put emphasis on how Ren isn't the villain he's clearly pretending he is, by making Hux his counterpart, someone who is a completely clearcut villain, a fucking Nazi.
I didn't think TFA was absolutely fantastic, as it was just a rehash of Hope, but Ren was easily the best thing to come out of it.

Sadly one of the reasons why the film was just ok and not great. In the final 30 minutes she seems to suddenly realise she's a Jedi master, and considering the main villain of the piece is a half-trained edgy teen there's little tension or sense of danger at the end. This is just the first movie though, so they better have something up their sleeve, because already she's already an incredibly powerful character and we're only a third of the way through.

One huge detail that I noticed in an earlier thread that was posting webms - Kylo and the knights of Ren were actually SAVING Rei from an aggressive padawan student in the force flashback sequence.
Calling it now - this will be the "I Am Your Father" twist for the new trilogy:Rey was never Luke's daughter, we are led to assume such, but she'll just turn out to be an orphan or some random force-sensitive girl sent to the academy at a young age. Kylo and Rey will have a sort of Vader and Luke-esque relationship, where Kylo saw Rey as a little-sister during their time at the jedi academy. Luke gets a future premonition that Rey will become the most powerful force-user ever - to the point of instability - and that she has a very strong chance of turning to the dark side like his father did before him. Luke freaks out at this vision and then orders some of his padawans to kill her while she's still young. Kylo comes along with the Knights of Ren and rescues her, slaughtering the entire jedi academy in return. Kylo then drops her off on Jakku for her own safety, to prevent her from being found by either the Resistance or the Order.Is is why Kylo screams "WHAAT GIRRRLL?" when some order troops inform him that the third carrying the plans was a young female. This is the reason why he informs the Order to capture her after her escape as soon as possible, because he already has knowledge that her powers can develop at a rapid rate. It's the reason why he knocks her out and carefully carries her to an Order ship instead of outright wounding her and dragging her to some stormtroopers for capture. He doesn't bother to torture her during the interrogation scene, just throws some petty little threats at her and mind-reads her instead. This is why he goes easy on her during the climatic lightsaber fight and why he pleads her to become his apprentice during that moment.

He's a developing antagonist, which really isn't common in media as a whole, which is cool, but he's clearly still an apprentice, just one given the position we usually see Sith Lords occupy. Snoke will clearly end up being the big bad, but we've seen Kylo being legitimately threatening, like on Jakku, and he's got a long way to go still.

Rey is either Luke's daughter or Ren's younger sister. Either way she is significantly younger than Ren (which makes me wonder how old he is supposed to be because he looked kinda young).
I think the direction they're going with her backstory is that once Ren fell to the dark side and destroyed the new jedi padawans Luke sent his daughter away to Jakku out of fear that she'd turn out like Ren, because they both would have had Vader as their grandfather.
Its either that explanation or the same thing except she's Han's daughter.
They've already made it clear that both Han and Leia know who she is. And Maz pretty much confirmed that she's a Skywalker...this lightsaber was Vader's, then Luke's, now yours...

Ren's younger sister is somewhat of a possibility. But then why didn't Han or Leia just tell her the news, that she's most likely their daughter? The only other possible explanation is that that they thought their own younger daughter was killed by Ren, hence not bothering to bring her up during their personal conversations with each other. But even then that's sort of a stretch.
The Luke explanation sounds very plausible though.

Basically, yeah. They're like ISIS -- an unrecognized state of fanatics and amateurs implicitly pursuing the goal of human supremacy over the Galaxy.
They lack the organizational capabilities and resources of any other state, and likely were only able to create their weapon due to Snoke's aid. Without the charismatic leadership of its generals, the First Order would likely collapse.

They are a paper tiger essentially. Kylo is trying so hard to be Vader and his appearance is menacing. But the slightest hint of failure or resistance and the whole thing comes crumbling down. Same thing with the First Order. It's why Hux is ordered to abandon starkiller base and recover Kylo, they couldn't suffer additional loss of manpower and leadership.

If you've noticed, Kylo Ren isn't strengthened by anger. He probably thought that killing his father would make him a better dark force user, but it only made him worse during that fight with Finn and Rey. Well, that and the bowcaster wound.
Meanwhile Rey's powers are evolving at a very rapid rate, and her potential spikes when she's enraged - a trait that's strongly related to dark force users, like siths.
Calling it - Rey will inevitably turn to the dark side while Kylo will turn to the light. This is the reason why she was left on Jakku - someone knew she would turn to the dark side in her future, and wanted to hide her away from the First Order because of it.

In the pre-production concept art from "art of TFA" they had a lot of very different and very weird designs for the main villain. Darth Talon even showed up in a couple of the art pieces.
