He makes really good insert character.
He's basically a poor man's Han Solo. Most people aren't charming enough to insert themselves into Han Solo, but at least they can put themselves in Finn's shoes. He's a decent shot, but ultimately he's just a somewhat average guy caught up in a freaky tiki space world.
He played himself. Small time guy who takes a chance and doesn't give up, and gets a big break, all the while everyone else in the galaxy shittalks from their couch secretly wishing they did something with their lives.
Who cares. He's a good guy who got a lucky break in Hollywood and his character is much the same. People need better hobbies!

In TFA she basically reads an imprint off the weapon, similar to geo reading or whatever with "real" psychics. The weapon "calls" to her in a manner of speaking because its been used by Force sensitives so much in highly emotional circumstances, and she's force sensitive, so it's like a magnet.
