It's the first session. How do you bring together an eight player party who all know of each other but don't hang out together often.

Get them drunk and coerce them into acting out their basest desires through roleplay?

Nah son, I mean in-game.
>>
Firstly, the OP is a bit misleading. I thought this was about the actual players and not the characters. Or are you still talking about the players?

Secondly, ditch at least 2 players. You're gonna find it real hard with 8 players.

Okay, at first I was just trying to come up with an excuse to cherry-pick aspects of different chapters I liked, but then I stumbled upon a premise that I thought was pretty awesome by itself:

>What if a small group of Fallen Angels disguised themselves as a hermit-garrison of Black Templars, but then got roped into 'adopting' a bunch of Initiates and Neophytes whose leadership had died in battle?

Basically, the story goes like this:

>Imperial Fists establish an outpost in an out-of-the-way corner of an otherwise important border system during the Great Crusade
>Sometime during or after the Horus Heresy, the outpost is abandoned but left intact with some infrastructure remaining
>Later, a handful of Fallen Angels, regretful of their deeds but unwilling to face the harsh penance the Dark Angels would inflict on them, find the outpost.
>This band decides to maintain the chapel and meditate for the rest of their days, or at least until the followers of El'Jonson find them.
>When the locals find them first, they make up a bullshit story of them being honor-bound to fulfill some ancient oath Rogal Dorn made to watch over the system.
>Pass the centuries quietly talking turns in-and-out of sus-an hibernation

>Eventually a battered Black Templars strike cruiser limps into the system to recooperate after being separated from its crusade due to warp shenanigans
>The Templars suffered many casualties along the way, most importantly evey marine over the rank of sword-brother was dead
>Desperate for guidance, they investigate rumors of ancient warriors of Dorn slumbering within the system
>Awaken the Fallen, who out of panic fabricate an entire chapter of which they were the sole survivors
>The Fallen relent to the Templars' request to lead them, figuring that being forced to shepherd a bunch of irrational, fanatical warriors who want nothing more than to die for the Emperor was ironic justice at its finest.

What do you guys think the result would be?

I like it.

>What do you guys think the result would be?
I think that if they assume command eventually they'll get killed off in service to the Emperor. The question then becomes does their secret ever get passed on to the younger Marines? Or do they become one of those groups with an unknown chapter origin?
>>
>>45921540
Thats honestly really awesome.
>>
>>45921722
Hm...

You make a good point with their inevitable death in battle. If they die without any lasting impact, how is this chapter going to be any different from regular Black Templars?

Maybe if they stay at the base as a sort of "council" to educate and direct overall efforts, designating captains to carry out shorter crusades and bring back new recruits, there would be the potential for some kind of a conspiracy vibe.

What I'm most curious about is what they're going to teach their Chaplains...

I love this setting and I wish I could figure out how to port it to the tabletop. Have to say I prefer Sunless Sea to the browser game though.
>>
>>45921565
sunless sea is awesome as well. The browser game has the feeling of old solo adventures, like lone wolf. There were already discussions of porting the setting to tabletop on the failbetter forums, don't know if anything was actually done about it. I think it would be quite possible
>>
I'm not playing it right fucking now because it's a piece of shit facebook-tier game where I'm limited in how many things I can do a day without giving them money.

Based on your personal experience what's the best combination?

Poolparty: Books get wet, dice get lost, I have to see my neckbeard buddies shirtless

Sleepover: Snacks, comfy pajamas, nobody has to end the session early because they have to get home

Why is this even a question?
>>
Sleepover. If the pool is involved, time will(and should) be spent on that instead.

That is not the case with sleep.

Sounds like your problem OP. If you're just blatantly playing NOT!Revy like you say you were then I would have ridiculed you as well, perhaps even making you roll a new character.

If you actually injected some originality into the character then it clearly wasn't enough as the GM still figured it out and so my first point applies.

Come up with your own characters OP. Nothing can ever be totally original but at least make a fucking effort

“What are we here to find again?” you ask, looking around the place. Mountains, mountains everywhere. Your allies are at your side, well, except for Volkna, she had a family thing to attend. Still, at least you've got the new girl with you, Shalra the human. And she even has her paladin powers back due to a deal with that one god, what's his name, the war guy...

Anyway, not important. The air here is so thick and hard to breathe, like you'd need a fork to eat it, anyway you've all adapted with the ease of long experience dealing with strange environments. Ugh your throat feels all furry like its filtering stuff out of the dust-filled air.

“We're here to find a bracelet of bronze inset with rubies that used to belong to Volcaj, the Fire Elemental King” says Ilnesin, sounding upset for some reason “try to keep up, we've been over this five or six times.”

“Oh right” you say, looking up at the floating rocks in the sky “so which one is the Tront-guy living in?”

“Trontarian lives underground” Anlia reminds you “the elemental lords of earth live under the surface, only the weak and poor live on the surface, the floating rocks are prisons of earth elemental criminals.”

Well, that makes sense, a little.

“Ok” you say “so we're all clear on the plan right: we're a troupe of travelling troubadours who lost our way to the wedding we were hired to play at and-”

Genesiya groans and puts her head in her hands “really this should be me” she says “are we sure Nansuj can do this?”

“I can do this!” you say “I'm so doing this, you've never seen anyone do it like me! What am I doing again?”
174 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
“Um...don't you remember the plan?” asks Shalra in confusion. She's wearing an adorable-looking tabard thing that covers far too much skin, and the armour and the cloth covering her face. But hey half the fun of presents is unwrapping them right? She also has that armband on that's really important it...um, it something elemental plane of earth and mortals, something important...armband can't come off...

Then Aboswe speaks. Oh Hells no, Aboswe is looking at you, panic!

“You sneak in there” she points to a tiny hole in the ground “it'll take you to the guard post. You get the guard to open the door when we approach from the front entrance” she points to a big cave opening “and then we take care of the rest, ok?”

“Yes Aboswe” you say in a tiny voice. She's scary.

Obediently you shrink down into a tiny snake and start crawling down the hole. It's a long and boring trip but eventually you emerge from the room of a small room in which two humanoid-shaped piles of rock stand guard over a tooth-wheeled mechanism that opens the front gates. Your allies gave you plenty of time in case you needed to like distract them and draw one away or something. They'll approach the gate in a half-hour or so.

No, wait, they told you how to do this, you have a plan...what was the plan?

>I scout ahead in case there's other dangers, like slaad!
>Seduce the rock boys
>Distract them, lead them away from their posts

How do you role play Rangers?

>>
>>45918912
If we're talking Pathfinder, I always play Slayers instead, because Rangers having magic and being these weird psuedo-druids is kinda lame.

Aside from that... they're scouts and survivalists, pretty simple. In a military campaign or setting, they're the guys who go ahead of the army, spy on the enemy army, and report back with information their numbers and positions (or quietly stay hidden until the fighting starts, then turn things in favor of their own side by providing cover fire the enemy wasn't expecting or picking off their command-structure via sniping).
>>
>>45918912
Play them as a maladjusted social outcast who obsesses about their (inferior) skills and hasn't bathed in over a month.

Shouldn't be too hard.

Thinking about running a game based on Dark Souls, but from the perspective of people who aren't undead. Yet. A bunch of questions keep coming up though, and I want to stay as true to the source material as possible.

What's the world of Dark Souls like through the eyes of someone who isn't undead? How does a kingdom of perfectly alive and normal humans react to hollows suddenly appearing in their midst? What questions would this raise in the general populace, and how would they react if their loved ones could degrade into a hollow with little warning? Or would there be enough warning to know ahead of time? How long before everyone begins to catch on to what's happening?

What's the threat level of a typical, non-PC undead, and how do the rules of Dark Souls undead make them a danger to a kingdom with a standing army? Would the undead attempt to fight back against hunting squads trying to round them up and ship them to an asylum or prison? Can full hollows be lead or directed in any way that would make them useful for military tactics? Where do bonfires come from, and how can undead or hollows use them to their advantage in combat or war overall? Is it possible to make a mobile bonfire, and would undead be able to warp to it? Does estus allow an undead to shrug off otherwise mortal blows, and how many undead can be expected to have access to an estus flask, and how many uses? What effect does Lifedrain have on living humans, if Kaathe were to show up and start sowing temptation and dissent? Can the curse of undeath be actively spread in any way? Is there a point where undead finally stay dead, or will they continue resurrecting eternally?

If the undead could be organized into an army and marched against a kingdom of living humans, how would they be stopped? What measures would a kingdom take to deal with it? Are there specific weaknesses the undead have that could be exploited? How to deal with an enemy that just comes back when you kill them?

The game itself answer all of this. Did you not play?
>>
>>45919011
Except it doesnt explain all of that. Did YOU play the game?

The good news is that you usually get a couple of deaths before you go ''Hollow'. So you are going to freak the fuck out of your family the first time, and you are going to look gross, but it takes a while for your mind to start to fade and for you to become a danger to those around you.

So it won't seem that bad at first, just really spooky, until it gets bad in a hurry. Undead/Hollows don't stay dead. Fullstop. They need to be locked up somehow (burying them counts) because otherwise they just come back time and time again. Most hollows are not especially strong, they are just hard to kill and if you don't find a way to deal with them they become a problem again later.

So expect Hollows to get rounded up and locked away somewhere, such as the Undead Asylum or the Lost Bastille.

Building up a list of factions for an upcoming campaign and had the thought to add in a few songs I could see used in a montage to show off a particular trait and help get a good feeling for what that faction represents and how they play.

I'll post up some of my selections, but I was more curious what /tg would use for their armies or 40k in general?

TAU:
> Cossack's Song:
https://www.youtube.co/watch?v=26cr_rBQu74
> TAU = Communist in space, therefore why not pick one of the best Red army songs. Play it over a Devilfish assault with Crisis suit support. Make it loud, make it awesome.

ORKS:
> Legacy by the Gone Jackles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1de0E3RZakg
> Hard, loud and perfect for some Speed Freaks on the prowl on their custom war bikes and buggies. Maybe a young warboss out to show he's the biggest, baddest Ork on the planet.

Imperial Guard:
> I was only 19 by Redgum:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urtiyp-G6jY
> A grim depiction of the Vietnam war which fits in perfectly with what a Guardsman would be experiencing on an average day in the Imperium. Play over combat footage, patrols, anything that sells the grimness of it all. It ain't called grimdark for nothing mate.

I find the IG music too specific to a war that already happened. Their are no Chinooks in the year 49,999.

Here. Have literally every kind of orchestral music an Imperial Guard could ever need.

You can easily replace the SLR's with lasguns, Chintooks with Valkyries. It's the tone of the song rather than the specific words that I'm focused on.

I'll give this a squint and maybe find a few choice gems in there. Thanks anon.

/tg/, if you have an ability in a game that let you say, make mods for armour and weapons at half their listed cost, and then used that to make additional money off your party by charging them 60% of the mods cost (so they get 40% off total while you make 10% profit for your troubles) would this be considered a "dick move"?

DMs, would you allow such in your games?

I don't see why it'd be a problem. It's a business - gotta make money somewhere.
>>

You're actually making a 20% profit.

Anyway, like anything that will effect party and game group dynamics, discuss this with your group.

I did something similar in a game. I was playing a Swordcraft Story inspired travelling blacksmith and I charged the party for all repair work and items they would commision from me.
They were getting 20% off the average price and my friends aggreed that this was a good idea.

What parts of the setting are your group most interested in? You'll need to settle on one region, maybe two due to how difficult and dangerous travel is.

Each region has a general sort of theme, from all-out war between humanity and psychonauts in Franka, Purgare and Pollen to the guerrilla warfare between two human factions in Hybrispania to the strange internal politics of Borca and Balkhan.

The core of the setting really lies in Borca, Justititian and the Protectorate so if you're just starting off, it's probably best to start in Borca and maybe incorporate one of two of the neighboring regions. Whatever you do, don't try to make it a game about wild adventures around the entirety of Europe from the very start. Travel is meant to be a very fucking dangerous thing in Degenesis.
>>
>>45917954
It's also kind of pointless, because on a certain level it's all the same shit. Post-apocalypses tend to run into the problem of player apathy because they go overboard with the theme of how "humans are the real monsters" and give the audience nobody to root for and nothing to give a shit about. You would never like or want to fight for any of these clans unless you happened to be one of them. So you can either fight that tendency by making sure the PCs are insiders with NPCs they care strongly about before any combat begins, or you can embrace it and let them go full murderhobo and carve a swath of destruction through the mapful of unlikable characters.

As the title says this will be a quest about you the player(s) to survive as a black mesa employee during the Resonance Cascade in the Black Mesa reseatch facility.

Year: 1999 AD

Location: Black Mesa research facility, New Mexico

Subject: (You guys can come up with a good name)

Occupation:
>Scientist (bonus on events/skills revolving around intelligence, negative regarding those of psysical nature)

>Security guard (Bonus on psysical events, negative on intelligence, but get a slight bonus regaring small arms, also starts with a pistol)

>Engineer (Has the option to make use of work equipment like blowtorches, wrenches, etc to solve and overcome problems)

>Janitor (Nothing special about this except that a janitor get a bonus when it comes to navigation)

The system will work in this way: You choose an action and roll for it, after three votes (and three rolls) I will pick the highest (or lowest depending on the situation) roll. The roll system is easy. Below 50 = bad. Above 50 = good. And the various classes get's a 10+ or 10- in various situations.

So before we start this you guys need to vote what class you want to play as.
