Best format every edition.

im currently running kira but i need another general to switch out to any ideas? something control-y would be nice

Finally, a place to discuss this format!

Everybody I know doesn't play anymore because the format was founded on a gimmick that didn't justify itself being separate from EDH.
>>
>>44714944
Well, friend, I have a couple ideas.
If you want pure control, Barrin is your guy.
However, if you would like to really switch it up and go mill for a bit, Laquatus is great.
Cheers.

Which system has the worst grappling rules?

All of the ones that have grappling rules.

3.PF and all those that build off that foundation. Too abstract to satisfy the crunchy detail crowd, too slow and complicated to satisfy the roll-and-shout gamist/narrativists crowd. It fails on both approaches.

Probably FATAL, since you risk accidentally raping your grapple target to death every time.

Your physical training for your magic isn't going well. You've spent weeks straining yourself, only to find minor improvements in your abilities, but you think you have a solution.

What you need is a focus. Power is shaped by will and understanding, you know that already. Well understanding comes only with time and age, as well the Elders have taught your clan, but power and will... The crystals hold power and when you create a magical artefact, it never runs dry, so perhaps you can eke a little extra power from the crystal dust Ebba saved when you carved the statue for Nila? Further, by shaping something to work magic with, you channel your will into it... Perhaps you might yet make something worthwhile from this? Inspired, you set to work. Sera assists you by finding a length of wood suitable for a spear, but you have something different in mind. Little by little, you scrape and carve, whittling the top into something that fits. All power comes from the gods, so you set to work on their likeness.

Deciding on the gods to honour is hard. All have traits worth their praise and if you left any off, they may be offended... In the end, you carve down the shaft, notching their likeness into the wood. Ulh's watchful hawk head; Lugal's antlered, regal form; Ursa's strength; Soqed's predatory grin...You leave none out, even if your blindness ensures they are not perfect copies. Sera and Ebba, thankfully, find the time to help correct you, acting as your eyes, when your touch fails you.

Once the staff is carved, you mix the crystal dust with ash from the fire and a little water, making a crude paint and trust Ebba to help you apply it just right. She picks out scales, eyes, claws, teeth and horns, so that they sparkle and gleam in the light. It takes you a long time, but finally, you can feel the power of the result. Next to the Fool's Solace, you can't help but feel it is lacking, but it still has plenty of power. The difference is minor but perceptible; you have created the first tool for magic. Magic has permeated the wood as well. It's strong and resilient, far more so than any lesser wood. Not unbreakable perhaps, but much less prone to sundering all the same.

You have created a Fine Shaman's Staff! This staff adds +2 to any roll to cast shamanic magic or invoke the gods of the wild. It is also highly durable.

It is now late spring. What will you do?

How much food do we have? If we bring land at late spring it still is enough to harvest right?
>>
>>44714666
Correct! You currently have enough to last you until early summer and then feed three of your family until midsummer

Planting currently occurs in late spring (mostly because no-one wants to get their ass in gear in early spring) and harvest is in late fall. If you cultivate land this turn, it'll count for this year's harvest.

The sounds of the horse's hooves on the road are muffled, turned by the light snowfall into a crunch of hard-packed frost under iron-shod hoof. The grey stallion exhales, a burst of steam coming from it's nose as you make your way as speedily as the cold weather will allow you to your destination.
The thick woven straw cape wrapped around your shoulders keeps you relatively warm, but you're used to roughing it so you bear it.
"A samurai bears pain and discomfort without sound or complaint," you mutter under your breath, quoting Akodo himself. You wonder if the Amatsukami, the Great Kami descended from Amaterasu herself and ancestors of the Great Clans (well, except one of them) ever got cold?

"Where's an annoying monk when you need one?" you mutter aloud to your horse, largely out of habit; a shugeyosha does not often have many traveling companions after all. Plus, the horse never tells you to shut up or that your jokes aren't funny.

As you round the side of the hill, you see the not-quite frozen stream and the wide bridge over it that leads to the checkpoint out of the Oiku Province and to the road all the was to Toshi Ranbo, your eventual destination, and you smile a bit; you are getting sick and tired of freezing your ass off in the cold all because of this stupid invitation burning a hole in your kimono.
You're only going because it's hugely disrespectful to refuse anyway.

Your smile turns into a frown as you lift up your jingasa hat and see that the bridge appears to be occupied even in the dark of the early morning, with one of the figures pacing left and right.

"Damn it," you mutter.
You went the LONG way around hoping to avoid this shit, but the roads over the hills were frozen and you're already probably going to get into a lot of trouble for being late so you HAD to take the main road to get here.

You shift your katana into the upright position in your obi, blade facing up even as you leave the weapon it it's saya.
It's an obvious threat, but an unspoken one.
Maybe that will be enough, but you doubt it.

You keep riding forward and don't make eye contact with the four men. You recognize two of them, but two are new. It doesn't make you feel any better. Matsu Shinta (worst name EVER for a Matsu) paced back and forth like a....well, like a Lion in it's cage waiting for food.

His face looks up when he sees you, left hand gripping his saya tight enough that you can see the knuckles whiten even in the dark.
"Temeee!" the samurai says to you rudely, pointing at you like you slept with his mother or something.
"Get off your damn horse and on your feet!" he commands, and his friends (looking slightly more unsteady then he does) ready themselves for trouble as well.

You sigh, must coming from your mouth.
"Yare yare....," you say under your breath, dismounting from the horse.

Aside from Horus, which Primarch would have been the best Warmaster? Which one would have been the worst?

Guilliman. Everyone said Horus was better because he could be nice to everyone, but plenty of these Primarches need to stop being such massive babbies who cry to Horus every time their feelings are hurt.

Better yet, Sanguinius as warrior/figurehead with Guilliman as advisor.
>>
>>44710931
Vulkan could have done the job. He's a nice guy who would be good for morale. Sure, he isn't a genius tactician but that wasn't needed much by the final moments of the Great Crusade and the Imperium was just steam rolling everything.
Perturabo could do it if he wasn't such a stick in the mud
>>
>>44710931

Gulliman. By that point, you needed a strong administrator who can garrison, assimilate, and foster millions of planets at once. In other words, someone who can set policy and delegate effectively.

Gulliman is the only person with even a hint of that. Most of the rest are too niche. Conrad Curze and Alpharius are both very effective at what they do, but what they do is so narrow that you can't really forge an empire with them. Jagatai Khan, Angron, and Leman Russ are all too combat focused: they can conquer worlds, sure, but not rebuild and rule them afterward. And many, many of them were simply too narcissistic to lead.

I sometimes wonder if the Emperor planned to do away with the Space Marines after the Great Crusade, replacing them with something else, just like he did the Thunder Warriors once they outlived their usefulness.

Stat him /tg/

I'm really interested in running Ryuutama at some point, and I'd love to run Night Wizard based on everything I've heard about it.

>What do you hope will be scanned?
Night Wizard 3rd Edition. It would be nice for a full scan to exist. Though the recently released fan-translated rules stuff was a nice Xmas present.

So, can we have a Dragonborn (maybe other beast races too) thread? I'm working on my first D&D character ever, played an NPC my DM had ready but never made a character before. I've been pretty set on Dragonborn. We're playing 3.5e, for reference.

I didn't actually know they chose to become this, I thought it was just how they were born. A bit odd, but I can work with that.

Maybe it's cliche but I love characters that start off weak and of a completely different attitude in their backstory then grow into a strong, powerful person. Since they start off as a normal race, I thought maybe some highborn elf, stuck up, pampered, sheltered girl. I have a lot of research to do obviously because I'm not far enough in the process to get this next part filled in, but shit goes down and she leaves her family, social status, etc. to become a Dragonborn. I imagine that many races distrust/dislike beast races and to have someone in your family willingly become one would be pretty looked down upon?

I don't know, throw ideas at me, insult me, tips, etc. and maybe post some dragon people?

>Bradley Carpenter casts Pithing Needle, says 'Borborygmos' against Grishoalbrand player Bob Huang
>because Borborygmos (Guildpact version) is a valid declaration for Pithing Needle, Bob Huang proceeds to reanimate Borborygmos Enraged and kills his opponent
>Carpenter used shorthand to refer to the actual Borborygmos, and yet, unfortunately, because his shorthand was an actual card (similar to 'Shackles' for Vedalkan Shackles), his opponent was given the go ahead.

Does Carpenter deserve the loss? Is this a prime example of rules lawyering?

My opinion: If I were the Grishoalbrand player, I would have accepted my loss and informed the player afterwards. I don't think the discussion is over whether he knew that the card he named was a valid card, but more, whether or not he knew he could use shorthand to refer a card that literally killed him already in an earlier game. I can't fault my opponent for repeating a name for a card in my deck that I probably mentioned myself earlier in the match, likely without the 'Enraged' part. I don't really expect anyone I play with to have known that the distinction was explicitly required unless they had already had it happen to them or a friend they knew. Winning matches (regardless of the stakes) like this isn't outplaying my opponent. I'm no longer playing the game if I do this.

I am pretty strict with respect to missed triggers and various other mechanical misplays, but this steps outside the boundaries of my integrity. If I am on the opposing side of a Needle or Meddling Mage, I am always going to ask "Could you repeat the distinct name of the card that you're choosing?" This is nitpicking aspects of the English language and has nothing really to do with the mechanics of a card, but more the imprecise methods of executing the declaration of a card name that cannot really be worked around apart from the use of technology (see: MTGO).
285 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
>>44703508

Also:

My ideal solution would be that whenever a card is named, and that named phrase exists within the full name of multiple valid card choices, clarification is immediately required. This is not realistic, however, within normal tournament settings, but it would ensure that all parties are clear and in agreement on the named card.

I understand that there is no possible way to tweak the rules to prevent this from happening, and I understand relying on objectivity over intent is integral to supporting trustworthy judging throughout Magic. What irritates me most is that the majority of the discussion for this on the internet features people who actively support the idea that the Needle player deserved the loss despite falling prey to a language quirk, and not a gameplay mistake. I would gladly concede regardless of the stakes because I prefer to beat my opponents with integrity, and not through a clever little loophole.

Its generally accepted that yes, you can bullshit some other curses, but its piss poor to stop at "the exact same language but different phrases" without going whole hog.

So, to make up for it being a different culture, you can pretend its something that makes sense in game translated to what you are familiar with. You know, because thats what this board is all about. Playing pretend.
