I plan on having a major battle take place in my campaign. It's a low-fantasy campaign, so the PCs are nowhere near powerful enough to have any significant impact on the outcome as individual fighters.
But since that would not make for a fun session and both a loss and a victory would lead to interesting consequences story-wise, why not let the players play it out?

So I wondered if there are any good rule systems for running this kind of thing without turning it into actual wargaming: Simple enough to be resolved in the same time it would take for a normal battle to be resolved, but complex enough to be fun to play and approximate a realistic result of said battle.

Also, it should allow for huge battles, and by that I mean 10k+ combatants on each side.

Bonus points for allowing sieges.

you could just wargame it
>>
>>44707870
I made those by creating a system based on the system we were playing.

It's the best way, because it keeps that stats and feel of the game you are playing.

It's pretty easy with almost every game.
You need to create statistic table and approximate the variance with a dice roll.

It's difficult to explain, and i have no idea the system you are using.

You are Laura Kinney, mutant vagrant.

Half the world vanishes as a shard of glass tears along one side of your skull. You feel the pressure of the expanding gases, Zhang Lei in his vaporous form, lift you off your feet and hurl you into the air, coating your skin with a hundred or more tiny speckles of broken window. Before you hit the ground, you’re already assessing the damage – feeling out your contours, dissecting the pain of the cuts and the bruises into guesses and estimates.

Minor injuries, save for your eye. You will heal quickly, and be back at peak performance in less than a minute.

The gas recedes, washing backwards over the lavish apartment as if the reverse recording of the earlier explosion, and soon enough Zhang is standing before you in human form, poised as if to move at a moment’s notice, his sunken eyes watching you carefully.

Just behind you, a trio of Laylas are crouching down beside Nico, who appears to have manifested some kind of shimmering barrier. She does not look combat ready – from her posture, you speculate that she has little if any proficiency in fighting, despite her apparent superhuman abilities.

You estimate that John will arrive in less than a minute.

>Summary: Year is 1983, Lord Voldemort was "killed" by the Boy Who Lived one year ago. You are John Apise, only child of a rich pureblood family, you started Hogwarts last year. You love potions, herbology and magical beasts. You played as the Seeker last year in the Ravenclaw Quidditch team but you couldn't win the Quidditch cup. Your house though won the House Cup, which is not a small feat. You stopped the half vampire DADA professor at the end of the year and saved your friends lives. You are now in your second year.

>Second Year so far: You went to Bordeaux with your dad and met with the new DADA professor there then you attended a Quidditch friendly match with your friend Tim but the match was disrupted by the attack of Death Eater remnants and you duelled with one of them briefly before he escaped, you started the second year in the Hogwarts and managed to get in the Quidditch team again as the Seeker, you are a member of the book club, duelling club and your friend Valdis' astronomy club.

>Last episode: You disarmed Rachel from Slytherin in the Duelling Club and gained some new respect of the fellow students. Your aunt was found innocent at the trials when the Lord Voldemort fell but it seems some journalists are not so much convinced. Reading the newspapers also made you feel confused if your aunt was really innocent or guilty. Your friend Anya was mocked by the Gryffindor Quidditch Team and you comforted her, bringing you two closer. After the reading the news Anya seems surprised that your aunt was involved with this but you assure her by saying that you "don't see her much"

Finally you decide to write to your aunt about all of this stuff and head to an empty nearby classroom to start writing your letter.

The moment you visited the Medicae Bay to check on how the autopsies were going you felt completely sick and fell unconscious, at the same time from their corpses several Necron constructs emerged and started to devour everything on their wake, be it organic or artificial and dead or. Why did you suddenly fell was something that both puzzled and worried you; was it really because spending so much time so deep underground was starting to take a toll on you or maybe because you were somehow connected to the Necrons and that activation affected you somehow?

To defeat all those invading scarabs you needed to create two traps, an explosive one with some grenades and another that was basically a stockpile of flammable gases and liquids that ended creating a massive thermal deflragration once you managed to attract the remaining creatures towards its core and detonated it by using a handmade Molotov. Still, alien machinery and inhuman circuits made those devourers be able to even survive such inferno, not even being in the center of a massive bonfire was enough to kill the entirety of them; to completely finish them off you also had to discharge several shots of your acidic plasma on them until all the charred husk that became the remains of the explosions ended turning into a small melted mound to completely assure that they were destroyed.

>>44750208

You had saved as many people as you could but most of the nurses, medics and patients had perished in that encounter, the outcome of that attack wasn’t completely negative thought, you had managed to discover a secret of the Necron possessed humans that you didn’t knew before. They each have had a canoptek scarab inside of them that activates a few days after their death, if that scarab is destroyed then the body won’t be able to create more copies of the necron construct and it will simply be a normal corpse, there was also the very faint hope of a possible scarab subtraction procedure that might and only might return those humans to their former selves.

You walked with all the survivors towards the main entrance door and with a quick movement you pressed the activation runes that awakened the disruptor field of your falcata shaped power sword shortly before using it to cleave an exit from the debris and scrap metal sealed door. The survivors, mostly medics and individuals with little to no combat experienced that just happened to be there, helped you by removing the pieces that managed to cut. After little more than five minutes the first rays of electrical light started to make their way onto your side, you had finally managed to open a breach.

“Stand back!” You say at them, who immediately complied.

You grab your Meltaser Pistol and aim at the door; you have wanted to use this beautiful piece of technology since a long time and finally you will honour its machine spirit with a great task according to its purpose and creation. With a flash of thermal and electrical energy you see how from its red hot muzzle an invisible ray of agitating air and ionizing beams discharges over the remnants of the door. Instantly it starts to melt and become electrified; the slag turning metal getting a orange hue and then completely red hot while several white sparks form from its core and start flying in all directions until the door is no more and the only thing that remains is a small melted aperture.

“The wounded ones first, go go!” You were pretty sure that all the scarabs had been killed but as a caution measure you would be the last one to leave the hospital.

When they were all out you finally left the cursed hospital and grabbed several pieces of scrap around to melt them with your Meltaser pistol and once again seal the entrance. Thankfully you noticed that there were several people around willing to help you and that they were gladly throwing pieces of debris and scrap to help you with your task.

This was nothing but a small victory in a sea of defeats. Your resources were running pretty low, especially medicines now due to most of them becoming devoured or destroyed by the Scarabs. In the faces of the small group of survivors that you had managed to gather there wasn’t only fear and hunger now but also a glimpse of hope in their eyes. Sooner or later the Imperium would notice this invasion and would do something about it; you had the promise of the Inquisitor about this…the Omnissiah and the Emperor protects you all but in the meantime you’ll have to protect them by acting as their pawn and agent.

Your name is Thomas Cairn, and you were finally starting to get your life figured out. That is, until you managed to blow it all up. You're dad left you a legacy as the Red Rider, and you carry it as the Red Knight, a hero for a modern age. You had your own company, a suit of power armor, an AI assistant, even a girlfriend. You had a great life. Then an unlucky invention put an end to that. It was just supposed to even out some pressure systems; you didn't know it would end up blowing up like Independence Day.

In a flash of blue light, your life was stripped from you, leaving you in a plain room with an intercom blaring. You were covered in scars from the explosion you were saved from, though you quickly remedied that and more with a new invention of yours. After some mistakes were made involving the creation and subsequent escape of a viscous creature called "Kludge", you were decided to be too much of a burden on your erstwhile saviors and captors. They informed you that your mother had given up her life for yours and you had been frozen for 15 years, then they told you to get out. The year is 2033 and the world has changed.

The welcome sign looks the same as it always has, though that's hardly surprising since it's been this way for the better part of a century. You look in the direction of the city and can barely make out a few shining spires peeking over the horizon. It would take forever on foot, but you could probably make it. It would be preferable to ride.

Almost on cue, you see a flash of light from the opposite direction as what you think is a car careens over the horizon. Maybe you could hitchhike, you're normally pretty persuasive. The clothes the FSA gave you seem to be pretty close to your time's casualwear, a plain beige tee and some jeans, though your footwear is odd. They obviously didn't buy you shoes and instead just fixed up the ones you had during the accident. You have no clue how, considering what happened to your legs, but they salvaged your black leather loafers. You feel horribly underdressed.

I'm mighty confused about those Fighter levels myself.

Are they going by the logic that he wasn't really a Ranger until he met Mooshy?
>>
>>44746818
I used to think he had much more levels as Ranger than Fighter levels
>>
>>44746832
He was already one of the best swordsmen in Menzo. by the time he decided to leave, on par with or beyond Zak, and Zak was one of the best weapons masters to ever live. The ranger levels came during his years of exile out of necessity plus a little training from mooshy after he came to the surface. The decade of hard training from the drow gave him most of the skills he needed to survive, the rest would be fairly easy for him to pick up.
