You could probably pick one up from a pawn shop or Craigslist for wicked cheap. Maybe $20.

When you start, I would suggest learning songs/melodies you enjoy listening to over and over.
If you want a new one, 100 bucks will get you a baseline model. 300 for a decent one. If you go used or pawn, you can get down to 40 or 50, maybe even 20 with the right buyer. Don't be afraid to haggle with pawn shops or independent buyers. The reason they listed is they want it gone.

Both times I've ever tried to ask out a girl, it exploded in my face.
When I was 13 I sent a message to a girl I liked on a forum (don't laugh, I was 13) and her friend thought I was a predator who wanted to rape her, and told me she'd call the police on me if I talked to her friend again.
The second time was when I was 19 and I was interested in a coworker. Some other guys found out and spread rumors about us. Eventually the girl got uncomfortable with the rumors which led HR to get involved and tell me not to do anything with her or I'd get fired or worse. I got in trouble because other people spread rumors about me.
Both times I've been interested in a girl it backfired horribly. If that's not the universe sending me a sign, I don't know what is.
