I did it /fit/, I fucking did it. Pulled 5x5 on deadlifts and killed my lower back. I can barely move without sharp pain there. Everything that involves using my lower back is extremely painful. So it will be more taxing on you in the short run (out of breath etc)
But you will get 'more out of it' per say than cycling

On top of that you're gonna develop your heart and lungs, if you're really scared about your knees exploding(which you shouldn't be) just supplement MSM and glucosamine.
Sauce: been running on and off for last 10 years of my life and my knees are doing fine, your squat numbers might suffer though but tradeoff is worth it imo.
