How good are the King's Royal Guard in your setting?

How good are the BBEG's personal Guard/lietenants?

Who'd you bet on in a fight?
24 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>

Depends on the King.

The Lumenaires of King Alderic VII of Chalon are level 15 initiators, but the lieutenants of the BBEG Wild Hunt are level 18 with Mythic and some seriously broken templates given their status as genetically engineered Moon Elves.
>>
>>48209553
Royal Guard are level 10 Phalanx Fighters with Polearms, Lunge and a focus on tower shield based teamwork feats. They are surprisingly tough to crack while fighting in formation.

BBEG has no guards. She just manipulates people for her own ends.
>>
The Musketeers are formidable, with excellent weaponry and a few class levels, but they can't really stack up to an equal number of adventurers past level 3 or 4.

Are there any games that do D&D but better than D&D?
262 posts and 14 images submitted.

Dungeon World is a more rules light version that works reasonably well. Its an inept port of a much better game into the D&D millieu, but it still turned out alright because Apocalypse World was solid enough that a hack by hacks still turn out a B- effort.
>>
D&D?

Don't you just spice up/reskin the game?

In fact this entire thread can be summed up with pic related, since it's what people actually mean.

A friend of mine used his familiar to make bombs, put ball bearings back in bottles after use, distill alchemist's fire, and rob cities blind.

He was playing an arcane trickster/conjuration wizard/pact of the chain fiend lock.

It was honestly a pretty cool character.

That campaign kind of fell apart though after the paladin player left. I'd like to get it started again, because I really liked my character too, but my friend has already moved on.

I mean, they COULD do it, given that they have the tech both sides want (ability to bind souls to metal golems to create an endless army) but I don't think they have a plan for what to do with said army if they win.

Why in science fiction rpgs is bringing someone back from the dead or immortality usually impossible, but shit like faster than light travel possible?

In real life, its theoretically possible to make someone biologically immortal, hell its a strong possibility of happening within a century, and bringing someone back from the dead isn't far off either, especially if the brain is intact.

Meanwhile, faster than light travel is likely impossible, or at best, thousands of years off.

What gives? 90% of science fiction table top game settings are like that, it makes no sense.
131 posts and 13 images submitted.
>>
Do you know something cool about the latest in brain reconstruction that I don't know? You sound like you might do.

Also, faster than light travel is possible becaue players want to travel between star systems.
>>
Mortality is a narrative barrier that people are used to and like more than immortality.

Not having FTL--that is, being extremely limited to a single area unless huge amounts of time are given up, origins are entirely abandoned, and so on--is a narrative barrier people are not used to and do not like as much.

That said, there are probably sci-fi RPGs where immortality is not just possible but expected (Eclipse Phase maybe? I think that has brain-in-a-jar stuff), and where FTL is nowhere to be found.

So it's just narrative bullshit?

So in a world where prestidigitation can light a candle, the military applications of combustibles are limited. The side which attempts to use it risks total annihilation the minute the enemy wizards find their supply.

So, what kind of technology /does/ develop in the Late Medieval and Renaissance, then? Where does military science go without gunpowder? What about transport? How tamper-proof can you make a steam boiler?

Magical arms race. Always magical arms race.
Depending on how close the setting is to a magic-fueled, post-scarcity society the development of magitech will go hand-in-hand with warfare.

Airships would probably be a thing, since balloons are a lot simpler than aeronautics. Most warfare would be magical bombing and tunneling.

Sad. Somebody started up a 40k group at my local comics store about a year and a half ago, but it fizzled out.

I've picked up a bunch of used Rifts book from a book store for real cheap, and the setting I've been reading seems really cool. My groups doesn't really care about how good systems are and really just want to do cool shit, so this game seems ideal.
The only problem is I'm at a loss for coming up with ideas for stories. So I'm asking what kinds of plots and ideas have worked well for you, or work well for the Rifts setting.
Also, Rifts in general. I really don't see enough discussion of this game anywhere, not just /tg/.

Most important thing is to first decide which part of the setting you intend to run your game in. A game set in Japan will be way different from one set in the Vampire Kingdoms or the NGR or the Federation of Magic.

Pick a starting location and at least one destination Mad Max/Death Race your way through the wilderness in between
As much super science and magic as there is in RIFTS such things still only exist in relatively small pockets compared to the rest of the world a trip through the American South-West with a little dip into Mexico can be life threatening for most low level PCs especially those unprepared for the vampires

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/3wjc3rr9zqufo/Rifts

For an episodic game you can set the PCs up as mercenaries or bounty hunters and send them up against a different enemy or group of enemies each session. This premise works for larger organizations as well like the NGR or the Federation of Magic and the Coalition

Their site says early September.

Okay, /tg/, we have threads arguing over best edition every week. It's time for a twist.

Let's say every edition and version of Dungeons & Dragons, from Original to Basic to Advanced versions, is good for something. Every version has its strengths.

What are the individual strengths of each version of D&D?

If you're favourite part of a gaming session is character creation, 3.5 has g0t the most choices and nuinaise.
>>
>>48201800
OD&D is a short read

AD&D is the most creative edition

Basic/RC is the best rules-light edition

3.pf has online references with search functions, making all material easy to reference

4e ended up being the best grid based combat after MM3

5e is DM edition, even if 4e made building games and encounters easy 5e has a new level of power in the DM's hands to completely customize the game - plus it's the easiest edition for homebrew
>>
>>48201800

>OD&D
"The trendsetter" is the most I can say about it. I like the limitations imposed on players/characters, but in general the best feature in my eyes is that every other D&D owes itself to this one.
>1e
Never played this one, sorry.
>2e
Scale. Coming from 3.X/Pathfinder, one would be surprised to see how much slower character progression is and how much lower numbers are. For those of you now fond of mechanical numbers for character growth, an AD&D2e Wizard might feel pretty realistic. The wide variety of sourcebooks and optional rules are a bonus.
>3.X
I'm not terribly fond of the system, but I do credit this for an influx of new players. Not all of them can be winners, but I've seen many Pathfinderfags mature into good players/DMs in their own right.
>4e
Parity. I personally disliked the loss of the linear warriors/quadratic wizards, but 4e was a concentrated effort to make every class feel tightly balanced and avoid the dreaded Caster Edition from returning. Whether it worked was debatable, but I think the attempt was admirable enough. D&D embracing its combat-simulator status isn't for everybody.
>5e
Tightness. The playtesting and focus on avoiding 3/4e's mistakes didn't work entirely, but ultimately 5e is a smoother experience. It's not too bloated (yet),and lends itself well to houseruling.

Stage 124: Sometimes the choices are made for you....

The party that turned into a series of running battles and a short vacation (which also turned into a battle) have concluded with your return home. The penthouse that the landlady has created for you and your family is incredible; he has spared no effort in making your home into a place that is not only comfortable but safe. You'll have to do something nice for her, you suppose, as a thank you, though you're paying an exorbitant fee. On the other hand you should be starting to get some income from your efforts with Chisato's gang of Yagitsune too. Though you could also technically maintain that Clan Ryo owes you for services rendered.

Nah, that would never fly.

The place is done in warm colors, the wood flooring smooth and evenly polished, the walls a soft eggshell white with a single dark stripe of rich sepia along the top. The kitchen is huge, and has an induction stove-top, a well outfitted island with a hibachi grill built into it, and the rooms are separated, but a hallway connects all of them. Two of the three bathrooms (the count of which does not include the master bath, which Kiki-hime is desperate to try soon) are shared by two sets of rooms, while there are two guest rooms in addition to the four rooms that you have arranged for your family (again, aside from the master bedroom).

The furnishings are changed to suit the room, the main portion of which is a large set of couches and settees set in a large U-shaped grouping with a kotatsu in the midst, with two other easy chairs, overstuffed and wide enough for two, face the couch-set, making it seem very cozy. No television in there, which suits you fine since they always give you headaches anyways. There are more spaces for bookshelves and art though, which also suits you fine. A sauna is attached to the more publicly accessible bathroom, which will do all of you some good, you have very little doubt.

Of more concern, however, is your family. Jinyuu-onee-sama is looking slightly careworn, though she is clearly pleased that you have all returned home safely. The injuries you have all suffered worry her immensely, even Yui-niji-chan's, which is a step in the right direction as far as you are concerned. Shoko is very happy to see Yuuhi, and there is even more definition to her rock solid abs than there was before you left; she's clearly not been sitting idly by. But it is Er Yin-sensei that concerns you most of all; Kiku-chan's greeting notwithstanding, it is very obvious that the time to do something about her injuries is soon.

Though her arms and shoulder are well bandaged, and infection is not an issue, the damage is clearly causing her constant pain. There is no doubt that it is also reflected in her pearl; the sheer physical trauma that she has been left with is something a mortal would have been hospitalized for months, perhaps years for, and there is no amount of medicine or remedy that can fix the injury. There is no way to supernaturally repair the damage outside of a kappa's power or divine intervention, and sadly you suspect the latter is out of the question for a number of reasons, not the least of which is her heritage as Chinese.

Despite this, she is smiling and Kiku-chan is kneeling at her feet as she sits in one of the easy chairs. Shoko is on the floor near the table, pouring sake for herself and Yui-niji-chan, while Yui herself is kneeling at the table in front of Akari, who is sitting on a couch and massaging the tall oni-chick's shoulders. Yuuhi-chan is regaling everyone who will listen with the tales of your adventures, while Inau-kun and your sister are making tea. As for Kiki-hime, well....

[] You're going to take her to that bath, is what you're going to do.
[] You're going to join her on the couch, curl up beside her and just bask.
[] You're going to abscond with her to the porch outside, and....uh, talk, sure.
[] You're going to see what she intends to do and follow her lead, actually.
[] You're going to kiss your wife and step outside and think for a moment.

>As a reminder to the returnees and to guide new readers, Ryukuza is mildly psychic and some of her choices will reflect that. In addition, what she chooses is less important than how others will view her for making the choices she has taken. More than one choice may be made, but I do pay attention to ordering of choices and write ins are always given first priority. However more choices taken means longer writing times.

>Sometimes I will interrupt selections with other choices or situations that occur, though I will generally go back to those choices and include them later when appropriate. This usually happens when other characters interrupt Ryukusa's choices with questions, actions, or commentary that distract her. I take player conversations into account while writing, and will often double check to see what may have changed while I am writing.

Are rules lawyers literally the worst kind of player in any game?

I've played reasonably pleasant games with rules lawyers.

In my experience the worst type of player is the person who's been playing 3.P for too long and thinks roleplaying requires having a specific number to reference for every little thing you want to try to do.
