I get that sometimes it's nice to have outside of the box ways of getting around a problem, but he wasn't getting the message that clearly trying to pick pocket a key isn't one of them.
That's just shitty DMing. Clearly he wants to pick pockets. He thinks it would be fun to pick someone's pocket, get something useful, and help the party. Why don't you want him to have fun? Do you somehow lose something if he gets to play a pickpocket?

Sure. You could let murderhobos run around if they're so inclined, but to maintain an organic world with any tension or verisimilitude you'd need to have the BBEG still continue with his plot, routinelly interrupting they players actions with it's developments (i.e. crop rotation doesn't help because the warlock cast some spell of withering)

Just do whatever you want and what works for your group. If your group wants to be led by the nose, railroad them hard and they will have a good time. If the group is content with making their own adventures, let them frolic in your setting.

Last time some more trade. Finally catastrophe occurred when a reaver showed up who was then bribed to go away with teen love stories. After that expansion was the order of the day. People were recruited and infrastructure was expanded. Some research went down and finally we built our first behemoth. We also discovered some think tanks and a faction who had some tech we would like to have. Sadly the attempt to communicate with said factions hasn't been going well.

Also random thought/question. Would it be hard to make a stock pile of meat to force a trade? I was thinking one way to get into talk from the valley would be to have some stuff they would want. Then force the zombies and monsters into a Lets Make A Deal to let us past or just talk to the mutants.

It's getting a little later in the day and the sun has begun to set. What would you like to do now? Going through proper channels to find the missing bandit leader is pretty much off the table, as you don't currently have much faith in Kakei. Hey, cool. One of my settings is largely Afro-Caribbean, along with Melanesia and Latin America. Southern hemisphere needs more love in fantasy. In popular works there's pretty much just Earthsea.
Good luck, there's a lot less art to work with I had a hell of a time just trying to find good, matching art for just one african-esque, dark skinned character. Took hours, and then the game only lasted about 2 sessions anyway.
