I was thinking about the "standard fantasy races" and a thought came to me:
What would the standard fantasy races have been if D&D had not been inspired by Tolkien?
If it wasn't elves, dwarfs, halflings and orcs, what would it be?
Would we even have standard fantasy races today or would it just be a different set of races lifted from fiction and mythology?

You probably wouldn't have races as an option if not for Tolkein. If you look at adventurers in fantasy stories that could have influenced DnD, like Conan or Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, they're always human. Myths also typically involve humans, for obvious reasons.
It's not just the races, though. Without Gandalf, you lose a prominent example of a good guy magic user. The good guys in Sword and Sorcery stories are normally the guys with the swords, so magic systems inspired by them are likely to be much more sinister and personally costly to the user.

That's what I thought. Early tabletop games were trying to recreate the atmosphere of The Fellowship of the Ring, with the whole "multiracial band of adventurers travels the land and explores dungeons" thing.
But if the standard fantasy races were to appear, they would probably resemble their depiction in folklore more closely than Tolkien's interpretation. Dwarfs would likely be mischievous and magically endowed instead of honorable warrior people, as an example.

"Is this some sort of pirate slang?" Samantha Blanchett asks, her S-Betta decloaking to hug onto the Knuckle Kaiser's other arm. She probably feels left out.
You smile at her over the vidcomm, "It's a Storm Dragon thing, don't worry about it."
She frowns a little, "Oh. What's a why-foo?"
Oda opens his mouth to explain, and you cut him off, "It's like a very special girl. Like you. Or Karen."
She looks incredibly pleased with herself.
The Rhinehawk and Yamato are alright, although the Yamato has some cosmetic damage from being mauled by the cruiser's beam cannons and is completely out of missiles. Oda breaks company with you to return to his own ship and, you suspect, the adulation of his crew for striking a killing blow.

Depends on the country. The country the players originated from has a complicated system of state owned slaves, slaves can not be owned by a private party, and slave rights. A neighboring country has slavery much more akin to pre-civil war america. One across the sea acts entirely on the concept of indentured servitude.
So depends on what country you're in.

/tg/, let's play a game. My next campaign will be set in Sigil-like hub town, populated with various races and species. However, which EXACTLY races would be there would depend on you, /tg/, and on a chance.
So, how does it work? It's simple. Name a race and roll d20. If the result is over 15, the race will be in the setting. If it's less than 5, it's not in the setting. On 20, the race will be one of dominant races in the setting. On nat1, however, the race will be confirmed extinct, existing only in old legends.
Multiple people (or a single very determined determined samefag, i don't care, just don't be too much of a faggot) can vote for a single race, but only the first result with outcome will matter.
Weirdness doesn't matter, if you want to showcase your original donutsteel race, you're more than welcome.
