A Numenera thread?! Unheard of.I've been in a campaign for half a year now and I'm really enjoying it.
Intellect is good, I run a Nano who Talks to Machines, but I haven't run into it being too OP. I dump pretty hard into it which leaves my might and speed pools pretty low. My current campaign is all over the place, we ran the Devil's Spine adventure for a while and that went hilariously off the rails and now we're in completely homebrew territory, my DM is pretty great. Currently headed west from the Cicalian jungle to the cloud crystal skyfields.

Hey there /tg/, looking for some advice.
My friends and I are going to be playing our first game of D&D tonight, and it seems I'm gonna be DM.
I've more or less familiarised myself with the rules and I played a bit of Baldur's Gate II back in the day, plus I'm an occasional lurker here so I'm not completely jumping into the deep end, but I was just looking for some tips that might help me out as a first-time DM.
Anything that might help out with keeping any of my more normie mates involved? Should I do voices for the NPCs or just describe what they say? Is there any accepted wisdom when it comes to maps or boards that the players can see so they can track their own movement in combat and the like?
We're going to be playing 5th Edition, and we have a kind of starter pack thing so I'm going to propose that we start out using the pre-built character sheets (at least for this first session) and the Lost Mine of Phandelver scenario that was included.
Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated, in the meantime I'll shamelessly self-bump now and then with concept art.

That's up to you, but you WILL be getting in fights, it's a violent and depraved world out their, and it's up to people like you to stand for something better.
This is v0.1, and it's bare-bones. There's a list of things to come in future editions.
Know that more advanced combat-actions will be facilitated by Techniques and Styles, which have not been implemented yet; gotta work out the foundation before you build the house.

Quest Start
~A web of Evil has enveloped this school. The sound of Justice must set it free,~ you say from beneath the wrapping of your cloak and keffiyeh that covers your nose, lips, and chin as you help the shorter and confused girl to her feet.
Once standing, she looks about the sparsely populated student council room with a slight vacant sense as she begins to cough and spit the gobs of webbing and sticky mucus gobbed threads that she unexpectedly finds clogging her throat as she tries to speak. Her name is Nui Takeda, a friend of yours who is also the student council president of Juuban Central High School.
Watching the two of you, while picking himself off of the floor, is your class representative and friend Yoshi Sakurada. A bespectacled young man with a tight and neatly trimmed crop of black hair just a touch too long to be considered a crew cut. He watches you suspiciously before he he thrust aside by the unexpected movement of his friend.
Standing maybe a head and a half taller than you, and built maybe three or four times as broad, with combed hair and a worried expression on his round face is Daigo Endo. A member of the student council and friend to both Nui and Yoshi. Earlier he had called the smaller boy to the room for aid when he had thought he had harmed Nui while protecting himself from her suddenly violent behavior while possessed by a puppeteer spider.
The fell creature in question is now dust beside your boot, having been destroyed by the ambient aura of your healing of Nui’s hurt.
Endo-kun kneels down to meet Nui’s eyes, a handkerchief draw and presented as he then sharply bows his head after looking away.

“You, you’re Eclipse,” Yoshi straightens himself up and says with slight alarm as his mind races through possible realization, “There is a greater monster at work here than just these small spiders, isn’t there?”
His question hangs, but you know that your enemy likely knows one of its own was lost and is sending forces to investigate...or retaliate.

If I block a 5/5 with a Kozileks Channeler 4/4, can I then tap the KC for 2 mana to my pool for an instant? Or does the KC die before I can use the mana?

Come morning, I’m once more sent down to the village, this time to get the wood for my staff treated properly, after all the effort I put into carving the bloody thing, I don’t want it rotting, or snapping on me.
On his order, I’m also to take Kara into town, seems she wants to see the sights, after spending most of the previous day attempting to till a patch of earth. The newly named Marmalade walks with us down the path a ways, hunting the field mice on the path, before finally settling on a patch of warm sunlight between the trees, laying down and watching us as we walk on.
Kara’s hood is up, drawn low to obscure her face and ears, her eyes bright underneath as we approach the town proper. On top of the staff, once again I’m tasked with buying groceries, but on this trip to town, people are starting to give me curious looks, eyes catching on my staff, then flitting away, some of them stepping out of my way purposefully.
The sawmill sits on the far side of town from where we entered, and I ask for the man I was told to, a squat man by the name of Jorg, smells of sawdust, but he actually smiles when he sees me. “Your Johnson’s new boy, eh?”
I nod, “Yes sir, just here to get this treated.” I inform him, nodding to my staff.
He nods rapidly, silently holding out a hand, I start to hand him the staff, but he shakes his head. “No no, coin first.” Ah. I hand the bag over and he counts them out slowly, testing a few with bites to check they’re authentic, before handing a few back. “All sorted, come back in three days, should be ready for….” He sniffs loudly, trailing off, as Kara takes a few steps backwards quietly. “For you- sorry, drifted off. Anyway, since Johnson’s returning customer, you get yourself a discount, enjoy. New customer appreciation deal.”
I thank him politely, before I glance back around at the village. On top of the grocery money, I do have some spare coin in my pocket...
