Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest! When we last left our protagonist, he was getting used to his new body and exploring some new realms he never got the chance to. He had just made it to the realm of Edenia, after a rather unpleasant encounter with Shujinko, the supposed champion of the Elder Gods.

Otiak looks at the raven man and then asks, “How long ago was this mission?”
“Only a month or so. I knew it would be dangerous to go into the Netherrealm, but I saw something else down there. Something that made me…” his voice trails off.
The disguised saurian looks at him carefully. He’s clearly got the lean body of a warrior, and he’s seen Asgaarth and his people’s capacity for battle, so he could clearly handle himself in a fight. But the Netherrealm is no ordinary place. What could he have seen there? And was it related to the entity he seeks?
“Why are you here, getting drunk?” he asks. Behind them, the celebration continues.
“I was deemed temporarily unfit for duty,” he explains. “Asgaarth told me to relax until I get better, but I don’t think I will. When I close my eyes, I keep seeing what is down there, waiting for me.”

"My name is Otiak, and I am on a quest to save the realms from destruction. If you'd like a chance to be useful again, instead of sitting around and getting drunk, I can give it to you if you would help me."
He blinks his one good eye a few times, thinking your words over. "Save it from what, exactly?"
Otiak leans forward. "What did you see in the Netherrealm exactly? Because it might be the thing I'm looking for."
"I don't know what it was, but it wasn't natural. Just looking at it made me act irrational, but I remember eyes and mouths and shapeless things coming off of it... It spoke with several voices and it knew my name."
"What is your name, by the way?"
"Korbin. And I'm sorry, but I don't know how much use I'll be to you if that... thing... is what you're looking for."
"This is very important, but did you see someone else? Someone with this thing?"
He thinks for a moment. "Yes, but... I don't remember anything about them. He, or it could have been a she, I don't know--they were obscured by the aura of that thing."
"Well, you're my best lead so far. I wouldn't mind having some company if you'll help me on my quest."
Korbin pauses. "Whatever that thing is, it's not right. Not of this world, or any other. If you say you're on a quest to look for it, then I'll help you destroy it for what it did to me."
"You have a vendetta against it?"
He points to his eye. "When I looked at it, it screamed in my head and made me lose control. I tore this out."
The saurian's eyes widen when he hears this.
"I think it did it to cover up its escape... It, and whoever was with it, opened a portal and it crawled through. I don't know to where."
"I do mean to destroy it," Otiak says to the raven, "because it means to destroy everything else."
Korbin sets down his bottle. "Then where do we begin?"

Alright let's start off with a topic. Any good hands / combos played tonight?
I just got through decimating my opponent with the Hydra Broodmaster.
I had Rosheen Meanderer out and six lands. Threw out a Savage Ventmaw and because I had Fires of Yavimaya (illegal in Modern but we play casually so it's accepted) he was able to attack, netting me 6 more mana which I used to bring out the Hydra Broodmaster. Ventmaw was killed when my opponent returned fire, and I let the rest of the damage through.
Next turn, 6 lands + Rosheen's tapped 4 netted me 10 mana. Spent 1 forest on the Broodmaster's ability, saved one mountain, first X was 1, second X was 7.
Here comes seven 7/7 tokens with haste. Outnumber out of fucking nowhere for 1R to deal 9 damage to target creature and open fire with an 8/8 and seven 7/7's. Good times.
>>43537088
Shiiiit... guess we've been playing it wrong. I could never figure out how to use the XXF ability.
I thought it was what level of Monstrous you want to become, and how many tokens you want.
I always read that X is the value for both the number of tokens and their power/toughness.
So I had assumed the first X and the second X could be two different values.
So, by those values... if I had 10 mana in total to spend, 4 of which must be spent on values of X...
>2 Forest
>4 Mountain
>4 X
>-1 Forest for ability
>-1 Mountain for Outnumber
>8 mana left
>4X and 4X
>So Broodmaster would become an 11/11
>4x 4/4 tokens
>Outnumber would deal Rosheen + Broodmaster + 4x tokens = 6 damage (Enough to kill)
>Open attack for 11 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4
>37
Yup, I'd still have won. Huh, well the more you know.
Could we talk a bit about Japan and its history? Could someone explain the whole samurai thing to me.
So basically, was it something like this:
Some bureaucrat wrote a book about "man, this is totally what an aristocratic warrior should be like!" and then all the other bureaucrat who swung their swords mostly on their spare time, who had never been in the cold mountains while being chased by the enemy, were like "man, that is so true"

>>>/his/It feels dirty directing history off board.
>>43536640
/his/ is /int/-lite, while /int/ in turn is /pol/-lite. Don't direct anyone there, ever.
>>43536609
I don't know a lot about Japan so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the evolution of the samurai was somewhat parallel to that of European nobility.
>They start off as a warrior class actually doing what they were intended to do
>Modernization and the rise of professional armies reduces them to landowners and administrators for their kings/emperors, while making up myths and legends to justify their existence
>The citizenry rises to prominence and eventually abolishes the nobility
England being a noteworthy exception where the nobility ot this very day wields a lot of political power purely by birth.
So those legends about katanas forded over one mirrion times cutting through sorid steer mostly came after the sengoku jidai, when samurai became increasingly less important and the katana was a status symbol. Back in ye olde days, when they were actually warriors, they preferred the lance and bow with the katana being a side-arm.
That's my understanding of the whole ordeal. If I gave OP false information and acted dishonorabry, please tell me to commit sudoku.
>>43536609
I still find it kind of funny that they were swinging swords around and shit until the end of the edo era, which was 1868ish.
Like, that's only 147 years ago, and they were still playing swords and samurai.

Well now hold on, I remember that section as well but does it ever say that it was Nehekarans or just the remains of older, pre-Teutogen tribes?
>>43536119
it doesn't specify, but the maps in Sigmar books mark it as "Tomb of Rahotep" - which is clearly a Nehekharan name.
How do I become a better roleplayer? I started a few months ago when some friends asked me to join their game. It was cool to start off with, but I'm just not feeling it anymore.
I feel like all of their characters end up leaving mine in the dust, every game. They're far better roleplayers, they're far better players, they're pretty much better at everything. They roll better stats, they get better stuff... I realize the last two complaints I had are pretty dumb, but I just feel like a load.
So... How do I get better?
>>43536070
It's difficult to deliberately train roleplaying. Although it's much less serious, it's still demanding an application of emotion like acting which some people argue can't be taught, and unlike acting, there isn't a lot of technical reference available.
Honestly, I recommend just having fun with it more. If you worry about it you're probably fucked. Just decide on your character's motivations and make the slow way towards it, your friends will be happier if they see you enjoying the game than they will if you show up one day and steal the show with a Shakespearean monologue, usually, some people are really into the flowery stuff.
>>43536155
Maybe I am taking it too seriously. Thanks.
>>43536070
Time. If you have only been RPing for a few months, chances are yes, you are shit at it. You don't know how to build a character. You don't know how to get into character. You don't know the rules well enough. You ARE a burden.
But, don't let that get you down, OP. Most people aren't good at something the first time they try it, and they don't even get good at it after a month or two. Sure, if you were in drama or something, you might know how to get into character, but you still wouldn't know jack about rules or optimization or any of that. You learn by doing. Your friends invited you to play with them because they wanted to, because they enjoy your company and thing you'll be a good addition to their group. You're still in their game because they still believe that. So, stop being a crybaby and just use some logic. Practice makes perfect. You will learn the rules as you read and use them. You will learn to play your character as you get comfortable putting yourself in the mindset of whatever you rolled up. You will figure out the ins and outs of character gen by asking and by doing. So just buck up, have fun, and let yourself settle into it. The more you psych yourself out the harder it's gonna be to get comfortable with it.
How much information on a homebrew campaign setting is too much? I'm trying to put together a document of all the things about the campaign world for my players, but I don't want to force them to read reams of fanfiction about a made up world.
What are the essentials for players to know about a campaign setting?
>>43535984
Have a one page summary of each culture PCs can come from. That's all that it's needed. They don't need to know how Father Sky knocked up Mother Earth, but they might appreciate, for example, half a paragraph describing common styles of clothing or a handful of popular sayings.
>>43536923
>They don't need to know how Father Sky knocked up Mother Earth
Eh i'd probably include basic religion and cosmology as each culture understands it so that'd be on the list for me. Basically I'd do an abridged version of the "what the <culture's form of elder> told me" series for glorantha.
Really got some great things you might not think to include on your own, like "what makes a man great?"
>>43535984
Don't make a document with all the things. Be vague about a lot of stuff, leave it as something to be uncovered during the course of play.
Write to the tastes of your players. If they're greedy murderhobo shitbags, offer them greedy murderhobo shitbagging opportunities. Maybe a distant volcanic island with dangerous jungle highlands populated by feral halflings that steal human skulls, hollow them out and leave them in a giant abalone until they develop a nacreous coating, and then wear them as full face helmets. You could probably make money selling those. If they're greedy, tell them things greedy adventurers would want to know. If they like exploring ancient ruins, tell them about a mysterious network of ancient ruins along a range of mountaintops with strange magical machines in them. Make them eager to explore your world by offering them things they like.
Never write creation myths. So many people do this with their settings, and creation myths are just dull as fuck. Myths in general are a really bad idea. Do not write any myths, at all. If a player wants to explore myths, work that into your game.
When you're writing your world book, you want to focus on the present and on things that your players might want to interact with. Hook them and pull them in with opportunities for them to exploit.
Post your character art and character name, and other people try to guess what kind of character he is.

Yes, it's called meta gaming, and no, there is nothing good about it.
>>43535547
Yes, we have and it was fun, as a GM I enjoy doing it about once per campaign or less (1/year).
No, I won't storytime it because you'll just say it's pants on head whatever despite not having been there.
If you want to try it, keep it subtle and let players get there if they want to. Plausible deniability.
>>43536213
Oh, and also, it's totally not metagaming. It's just a line or a scene added on top for a laugh or a moment of realization, all within the mechanics of the game.
