Fantasy Craft is a fairly crunchy style RPG based on the same core game engine as D&D 3.5 (as released under the OGL), but rebuild form the bottom up to be more cohesive in vision and contain no 'trap options' when it comes to character building.

And now for a potentially stupid question: what exactly does gaining caster levels entail for a PC, especially in regards to expert classes that advance spell caster levels?

so is gates of antares any good? was it worth the wait?

I've heard people say the beta rules had some janky stuff. Didn't read them, so can't personally comment on them.

The models outside of the Ghar are all pretty bland.

What's your best Ultralight/Rules Light system to use? I'm a big fan of this due to its easy compatibility with the massive 1e Module catalog.

For oneshots I tend to go for extremely-narrow scope rulesets, e.g. Lasers & Feelings or Everyone Is John.

For campaigns I'd prefer a more comprehensive system. A lot of these fall into an uncomfortable space of being too little for full campaign so you'd have to houserule out the ass or too much for a oneshot that you'd be learning the rules for half the time and not get the adventure done.

Here's Old School Hack which does a great job of having the early DnD feel without paying any undue attention to following DnD's ruleset conventions.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, I was thinking of instituting a houserule to make the Profession skills more useful.

Putting ranks into a profession gives you membership with a guild associated with that profession.
Each guild has its own list of guild skills.
You may put skill points into your guild skills as though they were class skills if that skill isn't already on your class skills list. However, the maximum number of skill points you can put into a guild skill is equal to your skill rank in that guild's associated Profession skill.

So you put points into a useless skill to open up three or four more useful ones, and hopefully spend fewer points overall than you would buying skills cross-class style.

And you get a contact and roleplaying opportunities out of it.

I should add that guilds in my setting are all fronts for criminal syndicates.
Example: local laws forbid open carrying of weapons within the cities, but everyone is allowed to carry tools associated with their profession. Guess which profession is associated with big, nasty looking blades: Butchers

RuneQuest has rules for guilds/cults/etc. built in without a broken skill system, casters sidestepping skills entirely (despite having some of the best access to them), and a desperate reliance on minmaxing.

All skills that give synergy to other synergy skills can be used with the synergistic skill as a separate check, adding a bonus to the original check for how much the other check beat the DC. DM fiat applies for stupid shit as always.

What would be some interesting alignment systems other than the classic good-evil/law-chaos?

/tg/'s homebrew Zelda RPG used the 3 divine virtues of the triforce -- power, courage, and wisdom. This works well, because it's quite straightforward to interpret an action according to these virtues -- if you're acting with brute force, that's power. If you're acting based on careful calculation and reasoning, that's wisdom. If you're acting despite great great risk, or otherwise acting in such a way that synthesizes the other two virtues to overcome adversity, that's courage. It's a bit confusing in theory, but quite simple in practice.

An idea I had that has probably been used somewhere, but that I've never seen is Heart and Mind. Rhyme and Reason. Romanticism and Enlightenment. The right and left hemispheres of the brain. These are roughly analogous to chaos and law, but they're still distinct in that they're on a bit of a deeper level -- it's more about personality than philosophy. I may or may not have been listening to way too much Rush lately.

One idea that I've thought up recently is a threefold alignment system consisting of science, religion and esotericism. There can be conflict between them, but no one is intrinsically opposed to any other. Religion and science together is things like catholic scientist monks. Esotericism and science is things like hermetic alchemy. Esotericism and religion is things the kabbalah.

I'm making a king of yet to be selected race for a 10 minutes into the future modern fantasy where the fantasy races have admitted that human tech is growing too fast for their magic to stay ahead of. Rather than be discovered, they've chosen to make themselves known. This King is fulfilling a prophecy that one of the party will believe targets them by making them suffer and fail in order to become the hero they need to be to basically stop the apocalypse.
