What's a good reason for a party of people who have nothing in common to come together?

The party consists of one of the king's knights and one of his spies, a religious pirate, an undead wizard, and a soul bound to a suit of armor.

Originally I was going to have the King's advisor have a divine premonition that would show that these guys were destined to alter the world, but due to changing around the setting's religion that wouldn't work out as well (plus I don't care for the lazy destiny reason).

So what sort of reasoning could pull people from different corners of the world who don't know each other to come help a king with an urgent mission?

Perhaps you could have some sort of tourney/trial with the promise of a prize. Have the participants divided in groups, one of them being the PCs obviously. When they win reveal it was a ploy to gather capable warriors for the task at hand.
>>

Details on the soul? Maybe he's a relation of the King bound to the armor, the wizard is hired as a necromatic advisor, the pirate to keep an eye on the necromancer
>>
>>44482897
I was thinking along those lines. Perhaps making it a small dungeon for all of the groups to fun through or something

Doubles decide which classes to include in our next setting. We try to flesh out the setting once we get some classes.

I start: go GEOMANCERS!

Nekomancers. Cat control. Higher levels not only grant big cats, but also creatures that aren't strictly pure cats, like chimeras.

Adversary is a new, custom format for Magic: The Gathering intended to be played over Cockatrice.
Update 4 is live!

>How is it played?
http://pastebin.com/4JUSJp01
In Adversary, players select an Adversary card from an existing archive, or create their own. These Adversaries enter play from turn one, and possess abilities that change the way the game is played. If you've ever tried out Vanguard, you'll feel right at home. Adversary uses 61-card decks (including the Adversary card). The format is Modern Singleton.

>How are Adversaries balanced?
Each Adversary is assigned three values: a life total, a starting hand size, and a level. The life total and starting hand size are used to balance Adversaries based on the power of their abilities. In the event that they cannot be effectively balanced this way, Adversaries are also assigned a level, indicating that they are only suited for play against Adversaries of a similar level.

>How can I make my own Adversary?
Post your desired rules text, color identity, illustration and artist-to-credit in this thread and I might make it for you! Alternatively, make it yourself in Photoshop or an MTG card creation program. I will then add it to the .xml file and it will become available to everyone.

This update was 100% balancing changes, so here's a changelog:

>Ananta Seshou's life has been reduced to 25 from 30, and hand size has been increased to 4 from 3.
>Azchiti now needs to tap to activate his abilities. His level has been reduced to 2.
>The life cost for Bestel's tap ability has been reduced to 4 from 5. He no longer takes damage equal to damage prevented.
>Candidate now has to pay 3 life to tap a creature instead of 1. His first activated ability now costs {3}{B} from {2}{B}.
>Chroma no longer accumulates peace counters as turns pass without players losing life. Instead, she now pays {W}{U}{R}{B}{G} to put a peace counter on herself.

>Fina's starting life has been increased to 19 from 18.

>Hezornak's spell cost discount now affects Eldrazi spells, not colorless spells. His land exile ability costs 5 to activate, increased from 4. His creature wipe ability costs {7}, changed from {4}{B}{B}. His name has been changed from Hezornak, Planar Devourer to Hezornak, Dread Progeny, with his artwork changed to something more fitting for a level 4 (and less pixellated).
>Ignis has been overhauled. Instead of gradually putting -1/-1 counters on all creatures, he has a new ability. '{R}: Deal 1 damage to each creature and each player.'
>The cost of Jera's activated ability has been increased from {X} to {X}{X}, and he must now remove X order counters, increased from 1.

Frostgrave is a pretty cool game, kind of like Mordenheim but with Wizards acting like a Warcaster/Warlock from Warmahordes
>>
Song of Blades and Heroes.

Great little system. Simple enough for someone like me who can't be bothered with complex rules and seperate army books and all that any more. I play with a mix of Heroquest, LotR and Reaper Bones.

Plenty of expansions too, aside from the typical campaign/dungeons/etc expansions, Song of Drums and Shakos won a lot of awards for its depiction of Napoleonic skirmishes.

Hey, /tg/, have you ever commissioned art of your character? Were you happy with the result? How expensive was it?
I always thought this is kind of lame, but now I grow fond of my RPG company, I grow accustomed to the idea of getting a memento for years to come.

>Hey, /tg/, have you ever commissioned art of your character?

Yes.

>Were you happy with the result?

Yes.

>How expensive was it?

Varied but $45 is the most I ever paid for a full-color pic.
>>
Commissioned, only once, though it did turn out pretty good for the price they were asking(was the 20-30 dollar range).

Majority of character art I've gotten has either been from friends or drawfriends here on /tg/ though, and I actually tend to prefer those even from a quality perspective. We have some fine talent round these parts.
>>
since we are on topic, can anyone recommend any artists? The ones who are rather good are either not accepting commissions or are on hiatus

Let's goldfish each others decks and then criticize the hell out of each other.

Just built this a couple days ago.

It wins on goldfish mode T4 90% of the time and T5 the other 10%.

Play a round or two and let me know.

Feel free to leave one of your own.

You know some stereotypes about races actually point on.
For example Dwarves not being able to steer their carts properly DESPITE BUILDING MOST OF THEM, or us Elves being long winded and boring... My wood elven gramps always told me his huntsman stories and would go on for a few hours without stopping (at least the story was exciting to some degree so it was bearable) and then i went into one of the high elven cities to study as a bard. The fucking shopkeeps kept on blabering on for two whole days before asking me if i want to buy something. No wonder humans and dwarves don't want to live amongst us and we are dying out.
Just think about what a first date between two high elves would look like.
They'd spend a week staring at each other.
I mean come on just mate already, that's your goal anyway!
An this longwinded story of mine is just another example. Fuck it i can't even make a short joke anymore. I give up.

Ah but you have to take into account the experience of the DM as well. After they've done the ol' "trusted figure actually shouldn't be trusted" a couple times they naturally move on to "hints about not being what they seem actually a red herring"

So I'm running my Pathfinder game this Saturday which has a Steampunk/lamp lightish setting. The final boss fight for this adventure is going to take place in an abandoned Whale oil factory, the only problem is, I'm not sure what should go into the lead up besides "Walk in, it's Spooky and Old, look at all this old equipment, Fight" Does anyone have any suggestions for the lead up? Maybe mini encounters before the fight? Or puzzles?

What would a Gue'vesa commissar be like? Yeah yeah, >implying they'd would work for xenos, but I'm honestly curious. Let's just pretend one of their academies was on a planet that got absorbed into the Tau Empire and after some initial purges, is still training commissars.

Would they be just as trigger happy as normal commissars, or would the Greater Good temper that somewhat? And how would they deal with the fact that they're fighting the Imperium now?

On a side note, commissars actually look pretty swanky in Tau armor.
>>
>>44478422
It varies from person to person, but certain groups of humans have been in the Tau Empire long enough for children to grow up as normal citizens of it. Others more whole-heatedly embrace their new cause. The typical opinion of those who embrace the greater good is that the Imperium doesn't care about the lives of its citizens, and so they're willing to fight to 'free' other Imperial worlds to improve the lives of the citizens. They don't hold nearly as many bad feelings as normal guardsmen do about them.

Presumably a commisar who was willing to get with the program would be one who was less likely to kill his own men to begin with. Being shown that the Tau don't expect them to die before ever retreating would remove much of the need to shoot guardsmen to prevent them from fleeing. Any who carry on as normal would likely be arrested for murder/warcrimes and sent for 're-education'.
