Totemist Quest.jpg

The taste of bitter ash coats your tongue. All around you the fragile containment that keeps the howling void around you at bay cracks and fragments, chips of ethereal glass showering down on you. You rise to your feet. The bloodied remains of the Avatar of Hunger drip in fat globules from the end of your spear as you swing it to bear. The crimson trail it paints in the air drains of color before your eyes.

You don't have much time.

The Hall of Reflection is visible now. The shadowy parasite controlling your arm sinks its talons into the very air around you, tearing chunks of reality and space asunder to breach the fragile illusion that threatens to steal the beat from your heart. Respite is within sight now. You need only figure the mechanics of closing the distance.

The world around you skips a beat, and your heart alongside it. Chunks of glasses pool around your feet, nearly liquid in consistency. Everything is falling apart.

As it should be, says a voice unbidden. As it always would.

You wrench your legs into motion. Overexerted muscles buoyed by trails of smoking nothingness force you forward. One step, then two, even as the hungering abyss bears down on you.

Another missed beat. You stumble in precisely the right direction.

You breach.

Senses swim as the world snaps into unbearable focus around you. Everything is too much—the feeling of the wood beneath your fingers electrifies you. Soft light overhead illuminates the myriad colors of the Hall in a blinding, violating swirl. And the noise, spirits above, -the noise-.

Small wonder you nearly black out. It's not uncommon for you, all things considered. More than one of your battles has ended with you unconscious on the ground—a distressingly common byproduct of your willingness to not step but leap headlong into mortal peril. More surprising is your body's unwillingness to succumb to the soft cloud of sleep that tugs at your consciousness. Its inability.

Something within will not let you rest now.

You plant a hand on the ground, feeling the decimated bone in your arm crack further under the strain. You other palm rises to match, levering you away from the relative stability of the floor.

Your armor and the smoking sheen within is melting off of you in thin rivers of quicksilver and black. It smokes away into a fine ash before it touches the ground, surrounding you in a nimbus of malevolent grays.

Your arm is agony incarnate stapled clumsily to your body. Still, you can move it. The ebon sinews that gave it life have not melted away with the rest of your unexpected armament.

You watch in half-aware fascination as the Hall of Reflections works to clot the wound you have torn in it. The walls twist together organically, a tight contraction that leaves only sparking scars where the Avatar of Hunger's door once stood.

The ruined arm cradled against your chest twitches erratically.

> [[The Void within you grows, and your power alongside it.]]

> [[New Void-Tremor unlocked: Blighted Regeneration.]]
> [[New Void-Tremor unlocked: Raiment of Unmaking.]]

You stumble as best you can down the hall. With some surprise it becomes apparent to you that your bleeding wounds have vanished, leaving only pink, raw skin in their place.

The Forge doors are mercifully open.

You are Osyki, journeyman Totemist and first line of defense for your village against the rabid Behemoths wandering the land. Your master, the previous Totemist, fell in a battle against a terrible Behemoth, leaving the duty of defending your settlement to you. After narrowly surviving a botched attempt to reinforce the Avatar of Hunger's power, you find yourself forced to grapple with an unknown and unwelcome ability within you.

The Ninth Circle of Hell sounds like a lot of panting, and smells faintly doggy. Large cages span two walls of the room, equipped with beds, toys, water dishes and every other thing a little boat... dog... thing might possibly want.

Except for attention.

Before Sammy can launch into her troop inspection again, the bright brittle sound of broken metal clinking across the floor is heard, with several corgis hot behind it. Hate sighs and glares a hole in the opposite wall, steadfastly ignoring the very fabric of space-time as several dogs run three or four laps around him, forming a kind of fuzzy cyclone where one wagging tail blurs into the black nose of the one behind him. Hamp actually leans forward a little as he stares, trying to decipher where one mutt ends and the other begins, but they have truly become a kind of canine mobius strip, with a steadfast and glowering Hate its fulcrum point.

And just like that, it freezes. You blink, feeling a little dizzy, and the afterimages resolve themselves into an attentive circle of corgis, plopped down on their haunches, watching their lord and master with solemn and intense focus.

Hate sliiiides his stare onto you, pinning you in place as he beams the entirely of his miserable existence right into your eye-sockets with his expression alone.

Then he lets his suffering out into the atmosphere with a sigh that turns the very air itself to a leaden miasma that weighs heavy on your shoulders. Succumbing to fate, he lets his eyes drop down and to the side.

The selected corgi cocks its head, jaw falling open - then it begins twirling in place so fast it seems suspended atop a vague motion blur with vaguely paw-like emphasis at certain spots. The corgi next to it whines dismally as it flops on its belly, regarding its companion with lidded-eyes, but the Chosen One doesn't seem to care, lost in its glee.

“... the fuck is this shit?” Hamp says, his eyebrows knit in an expression you're coming to recognize as Maximum Dubiousness.

You are Tsukuda Ryouta, a Shinigami of the 12th Division with the unique role of an investigator of abnormal occurrences.

Your investigation in the Human World's Berlin is approaching an end. Your mission is to find a human capable of using Kido, a person that you've learned has the name 'Shinji'. From what you understand, the list of suspects has been narrowed down to three people, all siblings from the same family, though none of them have that name. Perhaps they've changed it, though why they would do that, you do not know. You're still missing something important, but even so, there's no time to waste.

"One of them must be Shinji. We just need to figure out who." You tell Moeka. Your partner nods vigorously, gripping the sheath of her sword in an attempt to contain her excitement at the upcoming action.

"Finally... So close..!" She mutters with a smirk on her face. "But, uh... How do we figure it out?"

"We can show ourselves. Whoever sees us must be the one."

"What if all of them can see us?" Moeka raises a fair point. This city has at least three spiritually aware humans and there's no guarantee that there can't be more. It's very unlikely, but not impossible. If all three siblings share spiritual awareness, the trait loses value as an indicator to the identity of Shinji. Another complication, but it's still possible to figure things out on the go.

"It seems that we'll have to provoke a response again." You say. Mistakes are something you can't afford to make from now on, but at the same time, it seems that you can't avoid taking risks, either.

You have the address of the sibling named Erwin, so you head there right away to investigate him as well. It's an apartment on the fifth floor. The curtains are closed, obstructing vision from the outside, but lights are on. You're pretty sure that someone is home.

"So, are we going in, Ryouta-kun? Do you want to try sneaking in, or should we just go in swords blazing?" Moeka asks, leaving the plan to you, her wide smile beaming in anticipation. "It'll be pretty embarrassing if we break in like really cool guys only to find out that nobody could see us... Like arriving to the wrong party..."

...You can't say that's something you're concerned about right now.

...

>"I'll go in first. If I identify Shinji, I'll use the Denreishinki to notify you. Then you can make a sneak attack while I distract him."

>"I'll go in first. If I identify Shinji, I'll use the Denreishinki to notify you. Then you can make a sneak attack while I distract him."

Even though this has been really rough I really hope you're not planning on scrapping the mystery investigating angle completely. Because Ryouta's personal issues? That's an even bigger mystery that we don't really have any clues on how to solve, and if we just focused on that things would get pretty rough.

You are a Magical Girl, and you appear to be contemplating suicide.

Not any kind that you've tried before, obviously. Not that beautiful lie of passing peacefully and painlessly into the dark, dreamless ether with a belly full of painkillers and whiskey - a lie you had to find out the gut-wrenching, acid-retching, vomit-coated truth about, as your own magically-enhanced physiology somehow seemed to catch wind of your intentions and forced your stomach to pump itself out, all over your apartment floor. Those blessed, ignorant days when you were too drunk to remember that you have to crush your soul gem into powder in order to put yourself out of your own stinking misery.

Not the kind with you having your own gun for dinner either, a death you've quietly found to be nose-scrunchingly distasteful despite having come close to doing it yourself more than a handful of times. Distasteful not because of the obvious mess it'll make, but how you've always considered it the most flagrant display of indignity one could ever do to one's own gun. To eat your own gun after years of forcing other people to choke on it - you might as well start using the thing as a fucking hammer for your soul gem instead. It'll be much less shameful than being found in the cold dead grip of someone who couldn't even off herself properly.

No, this kind of self-termination is the sort only Kharn would dream of: the blaze of glory suicide. To get your ticket violently punched while kicking the biggest, meanest beehive you could ever find, and this one is the fucking Empire State Building of beehives.

The fact that you're rescuing someone from said beehive certainly adds a layer of heroism to it, but it does little to change the fact that you are about to get royally skullfucked by zombie ninja bees from outer space, with nuclear-powered stingers the size of combat knives.

The First Officio. The most powerful group of Magical Girls in the world, where Warmasters plucked from their own Officios end up to undergo...further training. Training that apparently turned them from the stellar Magical Girls that they already are, being Warmasters and everything, and into something that could conceivably solo a Walpurgisnacht-level Witch on their own - that is, if they could be spared from their offworld assignment, where they fought Walpurgisnacht-level witches on a daily basis. Preventing these space-borne monsters from making planetfall en-masse as they spawn from the gigantic Grief Seed hiding behind the moon.

Or at least, that's the official story. You have your own suspicions about the First, just like everyone else. One of the most popular being that they're simply the First Incubator's nuclear option in case one of the Officios underneath him stepped out of line and needed purging, down to the last girl. Nothing like the clumsy, protracted murder that Kharn perpetrated on the Third - a purge by the First would be quick, clean, and merciless. There wouldn't be anything left of the unfortunate Officio to bury, much less remember its failures by.

...That's a thing, you find yourself mulling over as you make your way to your vault. Your guard detail thankfully absent, having been diverted somewhere else by your own Incubator.

Kyuubey did tell you about that being the Ninth Officio's eventual fate if you do try to spring Mami out of there, not that it needed to be said. It won't just be you being hunted down - the rest of the Ninth will suffer the sanction of the First, too, and you're not that stupid to not be able to imagine how that'll go.

Android Eighteen floats around by the roof of the gravity chamber a moment, having just shrugged off the new technique you picked up from your mother, like it was nothing.

She's tough, tougher than you expected, and the backhanded slap she just threw across your cheek hurt like hell, nearly setting your eyes watering.

"Alright, Super Saiyan, let's see if you can show me the real extent of your abilities, now that we've stopped playing." She sneers, before diving again.

She's favouring her left side, where you drove a fist into her ribs, but she's got the speed to allow for it, edging out of the way of your blows, dancing backwards, before dashing forward again with a counter attack.

You trade blows like that for a minute on end, feeling the sweat start to pour down your spine, running into your eyes, slicking your tail...

Her stamina far outweighs your own, like she said, she shows no sign of flagging... you need to pull out a trick for this.

You've got a plan alright. "Hey, Eighteen those jeans make you look like a middle aged soccer mom." You tell her.

Her eyes widen in a cold flash of anger, "The hell'd you say to me?" She hisses, curling her hand into a fist once more.

"Middle. Aged. Soccer. Mom." You repeat slowly, giving her a grin.

She roars, charging in, aiming a punch at your nose. At the last second, you Afterimage, moving behind her, your copy exploding as her fist connects, knocking the android back a step.

You take your chance when she staggers, building your energy into a single blast. You need to end this quick with her.

"Kabuya..." She swivels, tucking her hair behind her ear, panicked expression on her face as she recognises your ploy. "KANNON!" You roar, too late for her.

It strikes her full in the side, blowing her across the room, leaving a wall of smoke, that small ports quickly start venting out of the room.

But she's already zipping back at you, one of her arms bent at an odd angle, but she catches you with her good arm all the same, another stinging slap knocking you back a half step, before a punch to the gut, forcing you to bend double, before she finishes her combo by rearing a foot back, boot connecting under your chin and slamming you into a wall.

Once more you slam into the wall, the thick, armoured steel groaning under the effort of slowing you down, nearly flexing to breaking point.

Before you can pull yourself loose, Eighteen is in your face, smirking, her good hand pressing into your chest, keeping you in place, stuck in the wall.

"You need to work on your stamina, you know.
She yawns. "Now, do you submit?" She asks, smiling coyly. A few scratches and dirt marks line her face, but that's about it.

PC in a game I'm running wants to carry a swordcane. Would that be dickish of me to make the weapon as shitty in the game as it is in real life? I mean, it's practically barely a weapon at all. It's a gimmick. It was a gimmick even back when swords were a thing. It's all but useless even for fencing, much less any serious combat. It's an 18th century gentleman's equivalent of the penis compensatory shotgun.

Should it use the rules for an improvised weapon? Give it a chance of breakage? Very low damage? Attack penalties?

What's your view?
