You say the words ‘operation site’, but everyone knows that it just means that you want to get a picnic spot set up on the beach. It definitely sounded cooler in your head than it did when spoken aloud. At least, that’s what you infer from Victoria stifling a giggle and Brady just flat-out laughing. Fitz is kind enough to just give you her usual crooked smile as your ears burn red out of embarrassment.
Perhaps you should lay off the official jargon until Rookie Team’s on a more dangerous mission. Hopefully when you say it then, you won’t come off looking like you’re too big for your britches... or swimming suit in this case. But, you digress. You have other things to think about.
The crisp smell of the salty air fills your lungs as your group plods along the sidewalk towards the beach proper. It is fresh and bracing, sharp and gritty, a different kind of natural air than the crisp scent of mountain woodland you had gotten used to at Cocytus. The forests are calm, and solemn in their silent vigil underneath the mountains. Here, the crash and rumble of the tide are the masters of the airwaves.
Yet for all their differences, they still convey the same euphoric feelings of freedom and invigorating vitality, found only in the natural world and left untainted and unsullied by pollution.
But you shift the main focus of your mind away from poetic prose and concentrate on the sight of the Boardwalk. Right now, there are definitely more people than there were last night, and there’s an excitement in the air. Why wouldn’t there be? Everyone’s happy, the tourists, locals and shop owners, to be back on the beach now that the waters are ‘safe’ to swim in once more.

You can’t feel the same though. Even though you told Victoria to discount fiction tropes as having no merit in real situations, you can’t help the nervous feeling that’s growing in your stomach. You know what they say about calms before storms? Yeah. That’s the moment you’re feeling right now.
At any rate, the four of you manage to find a spot just when the lifeguards declare the beach open. It’s somewhat of a scramble as families and parties rush to find premium spots. None of you could really give a damn if you were close to the water. A nice venue a good twenty feet from the tide line is perfect enough for what you’re all here for anyway.
Ten minutes later, and now your venue is ready to go. Brady’s already lounging in his chair, fiddling with his Mobile COMP. Victoria and Fitz don’t seem to be too eager to go into the water (not that you would blame them) and are keeping a sharp eye on the beach-goers, especially the packs of kids enjoying themselves in the water.

I had a female GM once, i was one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had in this hobby. Remember that episode of Dexter's Lab where Dee Dee was a GM? It was just like that. I was just dumbfounded thinking "She can't be serious", "Nah she's just pulling our legs" but she kept going on about talking unicorns and magic crystal castles. It was so, so bizarre.
Do we really need to have one of these every other day? Don't turn it into That Girl General.
Why does GUMSHOE never get talked about on /tg/? I only ever see it brought up when diehard Call of Cthulhu fans get bitchy about Trail of Cthulhu.

Biscotti castle was attacked last night, and Gallete's hero was almost kidnapped twice. Which has made every person who knows about your penchant for solving problems to immediately try staying at your place. Understandable, you are amazing and incredibly intelligent and all!

You’ve shed your heavier carapace armor for the form-fitting Kuron stealth-suit that you normally prefer, as well as donning the Recon Hood you acquired on a particular job a few years ago. Inhaling deeply, you step forward off of the edge of the Nakshatra’s boarding ramp and plummet through the skies of Noveria.
Your heartbeat remains steady as you plunge through the freezing clouds above Port Hanshan, arms and legs spread out to control your fall. Navigating the tunnels that snake through the city is not particularly difficult, and you make good time to the main space and airport, despite the stops you had to make to refresh your Stealth Module. Still cloaked, you observe the area from an overlooking balcony. Security is tighter around here, judging from the cameras set ups, security drone patrols and the LOKI and FENRIS Mechs waiting on standby in the rapid response stations. The few organic personnel you see are wearing uniforms with integrated shield generators and carrying sidearms. Most are just posted at various checkpoints, but some are on patrol. On the far side of the port, you can see the barriers that lead outside and the storm raging against them.

So /tg/, as a player, how do I get my 'spark' back?
Whenever I join games, I tend to barely play attention and have to really use effort to be interested in other people's characters, even my own to an extent. I'm not denying that this makes me an asshole, what I'm saying is I want help.
How do I get myself really invested in tabletop games? How do I give myself that 'spark' of general interest and enthusiasm? That's what a good player should be, and I fail at that. Please help.
I'd suggest really trying to invest and immerse yourself in the setting and characters. Really try to picture it in your mind's eye.
Alternately, try playing stuff from a different genre. Maybe you're just burnt out on [pic related]. I love fantasy but I like muh Cyberpunk from time to time too.
Find a good game.
I burned out as a GM, put 200% into my 'last ditch', I'm currently loving it and planning subsequent campaigns.
You gotta remind yourself of why tabletop is uniquely fun in a world of high definition video games and massive-budget movies.
I feel you OP. The amount of genuinely really good games that I've had to drop because I just can't care anymore is staggering. Are you a depressive OP?
Failing that: branch out. Many people only stick to one system and setting. Or hop between shadowrun and dnd or whatever. Play new things, join new groups. May find one you like.

What's the consensus on sudden tonal or genre shifts in games?
You're all pirates, sailing the seven seas and looting, suddenly zombies and you're conserving ammo and making desperate food runs. You're police detectives in prohibition Chicago, fighting the crooked system and busting rum runners, you stumble across a cult to The Elder Ones and your lives go down a completely different path.
Is that acceptable? Fun? Should this shit only be done with prior warning to the players, or just prior warning that 'something major is going to change the tone at some point'?

It's acceptable and fun as long as you don't do it in such a way that the players get gimped.
A bad way to do it is like that GURPS game an anon described where the GM said it was medieval fantasy, player took tons of Contacts, GM approved the sheet, then alien kidnapped the party in the first session and the player never got new contacts to replace his old ones.

It's very annoying. I once played in a WoD game, one guy made a hacker/tech support another guy made a vampire with AIDS. An hour into the game "Okay now you're all being sent to ancient Rome in spooky time shenanigans!". Everyone quit there and then. Give warning and make people aware if they're making a character that will completely ruin the game after the twist.

Once. We played in the school library, and one kid who thought he was thug said we looked gay. We just kind of sat there, staring at him, because we were secure in our sexuality and were not really offended by being called gay. He kept poking at us for a good ten minutes, then realized we were just kind of giving him the stink eye. He got real nervous, and left us alone. Thunder crashes around me, the smell of salt is heavy in the air. The sky is a light amber red, almost like blood left to mix with water. The sea is as black as ink, waves crashing around me in tune with the thunderclaps.
I'm alone, on a ship in the middle of the storm, the only noises coming from the sky and the see. And then wood flies out from under me, with a monstrous cracking roar as it's torn apart like a paper tossed in fire. Screams sound all around me as my vision starts to dark, crying and shrieking filling in the crashing of thunder and waves as I see a twisted smile form in the darkness, as I see my older brother appear for a second, his hand reaching towards me before.
*BANG*
"WAAAAAAAAAAKE UP, BRABRABRABRABRA!" Captain screams as I scream silently, sitting up in my cot, sweating and panting as I look around, confused as my heart races like a horse.
I try to find my breath as I see the captain's sharktoothed grin in the darkness of my room.
"Well, are you awake? Nightmare's should be an excuse to wake up early, not stay in, come, get up and dressed" Ginegine says, still grinning widely as I stare at him, half asleep and still out of my wits with surprise and terror "we've got some training to do, what better time to forge fiery wills and strong bodies than in THE BREAK OOOF DAWN!!!"
