Twenty years ago, "nerd" wasn't a term of endearment or a badge of slightly-left-of-mainstream pop-culture trends. It was a lot more like today's "neckbeard" and "fedora" in its actual use. I'm already seeing guys ironically(?) identifying themselves as neckbeards, and I haven't seen the fedora hate-wanks in a long time either -- or at least, not to the degree they were pushed a few years ago.
