Despite her newfound Wonderbolt team status, Rainbow Dash is allowed and even encouraged to stay right where she is in Ponyville. Given how pegasi have populated Equestria, it's probably a long-past consideration. What's important is that she can put in the hours they need her for performances and practice. And meantime she can still enjoy the comforts of home. It's a really nice place she's got, too, and it seems like her friends visit more frequently of late. Possibly due to finding that cloudwalking spell? It's some pretty utilitarian magic for a society that's got around 1/3 of the population capable of living in the sky.
Does she have guest rooms up there? It seems like a really big place.

A Wonderbolt isn't realized in a day, and all of Rainbow Dash's idols had their own hardships setting out. They've doubtless got many more anecdotes besides - life can be rather colorful for performing pegasi. And she never quite voiced the whys of not wanting the nickname to them anyhow. It's nice that Rainbow Dash turns to her friends for inspiration, but in the end, she's herself after all. If any of her attempts at getting a new nickname to stick had succeeded, would she have kept at the associated behavior? That might have been curious, especially if she maintained it for the public. Friendship is Magic #42 should be out this Wednesday (May 11)!
Spitfire's confident enough as team leader that she's probably been so for quite some time. And with all it takes to make the grade for the team, It's unlikely she'd have missed all of Dash's escapades, or stories of them, and might have been following her progress since at least the sonic rainboom over Cloudsdale. Dash applying would have pleased her, then, but she's never made it easy on her for any sort of celebrity. The Wonderbolts strive for teamwork and professionalism, after all - favoritism works counter to their goals. And Dash worked her way up admirably.Maybe she's even pleased that the vacancy came up when it did.
