It shows that she appreciate her friend and look up to them as possible role model. That was a bizarre and convoluted way to atone her nickname tough.
If I would have worked on the script, I would had added/replaced a scene about RD explaining to the Wonderbolt crew that she was bullied by that exact same name at a young age. It could have some great 'feels' potential where the Wonderbolt would empathize and negotiate/rethink of a new nickname.
Hmmm, now that I think about it, if there is a potential for romance drama, this could be a good revelation to a potential loved one.
It bugs me they didn't went with this possible character development instead of the imitation; A lot of wasted potential right there that could had shed more light on her past in flight school.

One of these days they will tell us whose idea it was. Celestia sent it to Twilight as the final test, so she somehow knew what would happen, but it was the elements that sent her up, deeming she was ready. There are some things about Wonderbolts and their function that suits her really well. They're like professional heroes. They react if Equestria gets attack by some monster of if anyone is in trouble. Kind of like mane 6 but Dash is the only one of them who makes the whole career out of it.
