any geologists or crystal experts?

I want to drill a hole through a large (about 5 inches) crystal point (the long way). I'm considering quartz, angel aura quartz, or fluorite, anything with a medium range hardness level. can it be done?

pic related: something about yea big

a long masonry bit might work. they have a tungsten carbide cutting edge brazed on a steel shaft.

Here's a tip: It's easier to get a good hole by starting from the back and being precise enough to exit through the tip rather than trying to start a hole on a point

I'm posting a link to your thread in my thread also, OP.

Hey guys, I'm starting my first project using SMDs. I don't have/want to buy an expensive iron with a needle point. I've seen some guys using copper wire wrapped around their iron tip with the wire filed to a point. Any suggestions/advice?

2 MB,
My aunt has been renting this house for quite some time and all around the kitchen ceiling the paint is falling off like this

I wanna help her out by painting it for her since she doesn't know how to do it, I've watched painting tutorials and everything, simple enough

But what about the peeling paint?

Am I gonna have to scrape the entire room ? It's a pretty thick layer that's falling off as one piece

Did the person that painted this not do it correctly or something?

I'd say to strip it all, give it a light sanding for any crap that wond come off, and then go to store, and ask for a primer suitable for old plaster.

apply a layer of primer, follow instructions on that, then paint the finish surface.

But I mostly wanted to say thankyou to OP for that picture, because, having spent too long on /tg/, all I can see is a fantastic map coastline for a world to be created from that picture.
>>
>>942519
the brown stains indicate water leaking above the ceiling or something, you have a bigger problem than the paint itself
>>
>>942521
Sounds good

And what about the doorways? Sand that down too or just paint over?

What kind of damage will this cause? Isn't it the landlord's responsibility? My aunt isn't savvy on these things and may get taken advantage of at times

15 KB,
Wanted to ask, I don't own a vacuum food sealer.

Is it possible to cut the bags into different shapes? Say a circle or octagon? Planning on using it for crafts.

>>
For that style they need to have a flat side. So no to circle, yes to octagon.
>>
>>941062
Ok cool.

Octagon was more important anyways. If I get the sealer plastic they sell on rolls, is it ok to cut it into the shapes I need?
>>
>>941090
They have two features, impulse seal, which melts the plastic sheets together and vacuum which removes the air.

You can cut the plastic to what shape or size you need.

OpenVPN, then Samba or MiniDLNA.

You can reduce your attack surface by running OpenVPN on an OpenWRT device, with one port inside the DMZ and one port outside.

I have a question about electroplating and would like to know what you guys think.
So i have a bracelet which is made out of leather strings and a symbol as the main part made out of some metal.
I want to electroplate this metal, i was thinking to plate it with copper first and then plate it with a thick layer of silver.
My question is what kind of metal the main part of it might be, it is not magnetic at all and does not rust, i thought it might be stainless steel or titanium since those two are relatively skin-friendly and are used for such purposes.
Is it still...

Post a picture of it. It could be just shitty pot metal. Zinc, aliums, tin. It could be plated brass, copper etc.

Silver is cheap why not remake the main part out of solid silver? Also why silver, it tarnishes and isn't something you normally plate onto things.
>>
>>942614
Its probably pewter.
>>
>>942627
I don't have it with me right now but i will make sure to post a picture of it tommorow.

I already let a jewelry store cast the whole thing as silver before and gifted it to my wife as a present, the original thing was the first thing she ever gave to me so i thought maybe i can atleast make it look nicer so it doesn't look like the usual hipster infinity bracelet.

Why silver? I don't really know actually, it's cheap to get and i like how it looks.

76 KB,
I previously had no experience at all with wiring, electronics, breadboards, ect., so I've been learning slowly through experimentation and online stuff

So pretty much, I bought a breadboard kit and some 433hz Radio transmitter/receiver pairs. My goal was to use the little transmitters to send a simple signal when they were powered. The signal from each transmitter lights an LED connected to each receiver.

I've learned that this isn't that simple. Do I need one or two Arduinos? Can I just do some simple analog signals or something? It only requires...

If you just want an 1/0 Signal use digital signals. Analog Signals are also for other statuses, between 1/0.
>>
433 Hz is not radio frequency. You don't use LEDs to send radio signals, you use antennae. You don't need any arduinos to do something like this.

What exactly are you using to attempt to send a signal and what exactly are you using to receive it?

I know LEDs dont send signals. I want the LED to light up when the receiver gets a signal that the transmitter is on.

I'm making a pong table. I plan on painting on it and possibly carving. It also has to be pretty durable or at least not scratch easily. What type of wood should I use?

Like, pong the video game in a cocktail arcade cabinet or good ol' ping pong with a net an' everything?
>>
>>942517
The finish you give it is more important to prevent scratching then the type of wood most of the time.

My telephone extension stopped working.

When I tested the extension, there was no resistance between any of the 4 wires.

I can understand 2 wires shorting, but all 4? How the fuck does that even happen?

insulation melting due to a single heat source

If it's plugged into your handset/base that should be pretty low resistnce, just the speaker.

Sorry for the fairly basic question, but Google is falling short. Picture is the boiler in the place I'm staying for the next two weeks. Typically I arrived and there's no water pressure, but also no visible filling loop or even valves to connect it to. Google tells me that this model (Baxi Platinum, eurocentric model by the looks of it) often uses a rigid filling loop but from a few videos I've seen in some cases it also just connects to a valve somewhere in the apartment.

Unfortunately I've looked under sinks and in closets all over the apartment...

hey /diy/. first time here so sorry if i've made a mistake
I want to make these shoes as close to all-white or off white as I can, so I want to get rid of the color from the blue leather parts and the logos. Will bleach do this? Reading around online some people are saying it's fine and others that it will "destroy" them however that may be
if bleach doesn't work, what else could I do to get rid of the color?
thanks

It really depends on what the material actually is.
They also sell a "white wash" by Rit to get rid of dyes, but its even more hit and miss than bleach is.

Its really a toss up because nobody knows what materials it actually is, it could turn your blue bits orange for example.

I would just try it on a small piece and see what it does.

How low can you set your thermostat before your risk pipes begining to freeze?
10 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>942273
It depends on the house. I keep my house set at 55 in the dead of winter and have no problems. My friend's house was set at 70 and his pipes burst on a cold snap last week.

If the house is well insulated and the pipes are free from drafts then they'll be fine as long as no part of them reaches the freezing point.
>>
>>942273

Not sure, we always just put a heater in our well pump house (lol innawoods) and at night we would crack the faucets so they were just dripping to keep pump running and water flowing throughout the night.
>>
>>942273

Interior or exterior pipes?

I had a plumber friend come solder in shutoff valves to all my spigots. I turn them off and drain before the first freeze.

My basement is partially built and the only part of my house with exposed pipes (minus the spigots). It gets about 5-10 degrees cooler than the rest of my house in winter. 66 upstairs, 61 downstairs 27 degrees outside.

I could probably turn my heat completely off and not worry about the pipes. Then again, I live in the south.

Basically,...

I needed longer extension cord.

The hardware store is closed, and all I had laying around was this heavy duty cord that my uncle uses for his projects.

To cover the exposed copper, I wrapped a couple nitrile gloves around them.

What could go wrong?

Nitrile rubber is electricity resistant, right?
