Anyone ever made swag lamps for themselves? Just wondering if I gotta make them to code as far as access to junctions or what.
I've got 3 rooms in my townhouse with switched plugs and it's starting to drive me nuts after 3 months.

Making your own lamps is fine. If you have an electrical fire and insurance somehow finds out that a non csa approved device that you built and installed caused it, you will probably not be covered.

Building a work bench and I want to hang a shop light overhead (attached to the bench, not the ceiling) but I don't want to use a pull cord/chain to operate it or a switch on the unit itself. I would like to wire it to a normal light switch and power it with a normal plug. I googled and can only find results for wiring a switched outlet - not what I'm trying to do.
Also taking suggestions on the type of light I should use. I don't know much about lighting but I know I don't want something that will buzz like...

get a wire-in type of shop light, an extension cord, a 1 gang box, and a light switch.
cut the cord in half, wire switch into both cut ends of cord, put switch in box, mount box.
now cut the female head off the cord and wire that end to the light. mount the light

I'm trying to repair a VCR that won't play or fast forward, narrowed it down to the forward reel.
When I took out the deck mechanism I noticed both brakes on the reel were engaged.
Guessing it's some form of mechanical failure, I'm not really familiar with VCR's.
I'm pretty sure some of you know your way around this thing, I'd appreciate the help.
Work on it in a room with no windows open to light and only a fluorescent light. Daylight or incandescent will stop many from working by messing with the optical sensors.

thats the way they are supposed to be when there is no taped loaded.

thats a problem with part 33. the rubber band that is wrapped around the section that engages the reels to the drive shaft is no good. you'll need to replace the whole assembly (can't just replace the band).

By spinning the capstan motor I can engage the backward reel, hence why the rewind feature works.
I assumed that both backward and forward reels are supposed to be able to engage one at a time when you spin the capstan one way or the other.

My gf wants to replace the carpet at our place without hiring someone. Can someone explain how to pull up the carpet and replace it with hardwood floors. The online how to's don't really make much sense to me.

15K OHM 1/4W resistor and two 15 amp fuses

parallel fuses dont add like you would expect. better to use a single 30 car fuse.

Why would a single 30 be better then two parallel fuses?
no idea what a vandal switch is. i'm familiar with anti-vandal switches, made so little shit kids wont break them.
the reason 2 fuses are bad are coz one will always have a slightly power resistance, and so it will take most of the current, thus burning out, then the second takes all the current, then burns out. the current doesnt divide 50/50. one way to sorta fix that is to use one fuse per battery.
as for your resistor, 15K is fine, so is 1.5K or 150K. it's in no way critical.
I want to make a Tiltable desk but I dont know what the rails with indents are called that lock the angle in place but can also be put back to flat.

So I have the songs and they are grouped with the same artist name and album, how do I associate a JPEG as the album cover as I see in digital albums I see from other popular artists

Evening, /tg/. I'm going to be making a small fat suit that'll go under clothes, only a small belly and lovehandles. But it needs to be convincingly realistic in weight, firmness, and jiggle, since people will be seeing it up close, and possibly touching it.
I'll likely make the form for the belly out of two t-shirts stitched together, with straps on the back to hold the front tight to the body. Maybe some other shapes to adjust and smooth things out.
What I'm really stuck on is what to use for the stuffing. I'll likely use rice while figuring...

Use to listen to Police a lot, but they went digital in my area about a month ago. Pretty sure they're encrypted, but thinking of getting a digital scanner anyway, since it's easier to use/program/organise/etc. Probably going to lay down $300 on one of these.

I use a Baofeng UV-5R v2+ for scanning, NOAA weather alerts, and FM commercial radio. My old man's got a Radioshack Pro-528 receiver that I used to tinker with - that could pick up trunked frequencies and could pick up State Police comms.
I made these flaps to keep the slush from spraying all over the front of my trailer
Got 1 mud flap from the big truck repair shop. $15. Ripped in half on the tablesaw
Had some aluminum L extrusion laying around used that to grip the flaps.
The square aluminum extrusion was also in the scrap pile. Painted it black.
Used self tappers to attach the flaps to the rail.
Buddy cut the plate on the plasma table at his work. Cost me a large coffee.
Used a big bolt thru the hitch hole on the bumper to attach unit to the truck. $12 at the tractor shop.

Maybe its just me, but Id put 5 bolts in each flap instead of 3. Your tires start spinning and its gonna put a lot of strain on those 3 bolts. also make sure the aluminum pinches the rubber, so force is equalized across the aluminum bar instead of just the 3 small pieces of rubber above the 3 bolts.
My dog tore up the flooring in my apartments bathroom today, where would I start on fixing this myself as I don't want to deal with anyone from the apartment and paying way too much for them to fix it. Also how difficult will this be?

sheeit, i have that exact flooring, weird. you're probably fucked but i would just have a flooring guy come in and do it for you undercover. or the other option and what would look best would be to tear it all up and re-floor it yourself from youtube vids if you're not a retard. sand the wood and wall scratches and use filler if needed and repaint.

Hey /diy/, i want to start making pixel art with ironing beads. Does anyone have experience with it or have some tips? Which is the best brand? And can i use baking paper instead of this special paper selled by the conpanies which also sell the beads?

brand doesn't matter, waxed paper works acceptably well, but don't use parchment. You may want to do something different, break the mold and go hex grid instead of orthagonal.
Are you going to just lightly sinter the beads together re pic or melt them flatter so there are no gaps.
Also, get/make a very large grid for them.
If you're careful with setup and ironing, you may be able to use just a rubber sheet to keep them in place when you iron them.

Bought some to do them with my gf, couldn't get perler so we got hama instead, then tried ebay ones. Brand really doesn't matter, there's a slight difference in shine and texture but you're never going to look that closely at it.
So far we've made pic related, and they've just been sitting in a box since because it's insanely expensive when you do the math (with name brands at least) Still have to look for a good place to get bulk offbrand ones. Another advantage in mixing brands is you get more colours to work with. But as that anon...

A pen exploded in my backpack a while ago (about 6 years ago) and it is high time I clean it. How can I get the stain to not bleed? I don't actually care about the stain, I just don't want it to rub off on anything.
Complications are the fact that it exploded in the tiny pockets in the front pouch so I can barely fit my fingers in there to scrub it.
So far I have put a lot of laundry stain remover and run it through the the laundry like 10x. Now it doesn't bleed unless I put stain remover on it and let it soak for a few minutes and try rubbing with...

Use alcohol.
Stop bleeding with cotton rags.
Idealy stack several rags below. get wet with alcohol, place more rags on top, set heavy weight on top. Cotton rags will absorb now liquid ink.
Run through washer to get the rest out.

That's what I have for home use. Excellent MIG, decent TIG and stick. Nice for aluminum (spool gun). Versatility and portability are nice. Duty cycle is too low for production work, but all right for home projects. What were you planning to use it for?
Well yesterday I had a thought, more of a dream really. I was riding my motorcycle with some people and came to a line of people sitting on their bikes on a bench, like a church pew. I tried to squeeze myself and my bike past everyone to get to the other side of the bench thing. When I got to the end my bike was gone. Same color bike was in my hands but it wasn't mine. A buddy picked me up and we went riding around looking for who took it. We stopped at some sketchy shops that sold bikes because we figured they would be selling it as stolen. No dice.
