Could someone give me a primer on how Star Wars politics stand now? How do the First Order, the Republic, and the Resistance fit together? How much power and influence does each have?What about after the Republic capitol is destroyed?
Republic is like Europe, First Order Russia and Resistance people from all around Europe who're fed up with Russias shit and want to put and end to it before anything even happens

Empire was fractured after the OT, recently the pieces have banded together under the first order. Republic was re-established after OT as New Republic, and the Resitence continued to operate as it's own organization taking down the remaining empire fragments.

So there's a fine line between a movie paying homage and having callbacks, to just straight up ripping it off. I think The Force Awakens is firmly in the latter, and I fully expected it because of his hamfisted attempts at appeasing trekkies with reference fanservice.

Star Wars has been doing callbacks and parallels since fucking Return of the Jedi. The prequel trilogy was full of it.
Kylo Ren was an obvious pathetic attempt at creating another Vader. Black clothes, red sword, a mask? Seriously? Maybe if they spent a little less time counting their shekels and more coming up with original characters we wouldn't have these problems. You could tell they tried to make him seem powerful and intimidating but Driver just couldn't pull it off, is he even an actor? I could see clearly he was nervous and doubted himself, really bad performance

I don't get it. If you like it that's perfectly fine, but 90%? That doesn't make any sense. Nostlgia goggles/prequel hate can't possibly be that strong. There's basic film making flaws that critics should point out, but 90%? It's ridiculous.

Star Wars was "the thing" of the year. 90% of movie critics have no guts, and so will just go along with the flow. Just the Avengers was the big thing of 2012, or Game of Thrones is the big thing on tv.
