Why is getting A LOT of players to actually roleplay during a role-playing game like pulling teeth?
Because your skill at GMing comparable to your skill in dentistry
You'll realize this someday:
99.9% of players are shit people who are miserable to be around and ruin everything.
They can never, and will never, care about your game as much as you do, and they just want to be catered to while they act bored and uninterested.

Because playing pretend is really embarrassing for an adult.
I know a ton of you guys are into trying to design your own games, and I'm doing the same. I've heard of card games legally owning the rights to certain concepts used in them, like MTG starting with 20 life, or tapping cards to symbolize paying a cost. Is there any list or database of similar concepts that can't be used in other games anymore due to ownership?
>>45381141
You can trademark terms, but you can't actually trademark game concepts. MTG has a trademark on 'Tap', but you can't trademark the concept of turning a card to do something, which is why there's a ton of other card games that use the same mechanics, but their own terms for it.
>>45381216
Ok, but is there an easy way to find out if any other terms have been used in that way? It would be very difficult to manually search for patents for each term used in a game.
>>45381337
I'm not sure. I know that there are sites dedicated to TCG's that might have something like that, and the /gdg/ thread is a good place to ask, someone there might know.

“Your friend is fine,” says the 2-1B medical droid as he oversees Kuvasz on his bed. You stand over his bed with Vikker, crossing your arms. Kuvasz lies there, barely awake, but looking better than last night at least. A bacta patch crosses over his chest where the lightsaber hit him. If he hadn’t been wearing that armor, you’d probably be only looking at half of a Mandalorian right now. “There are extensive burns across his chest, but they should heal with some bed rest and regular application of bacta. Admiral Reike has informed the medical staff to keep you supplied. I must admit, I have not ever had a subject with this much external scarring so it was a very interesting experience.”
“Hey, I’m full of surprises,” mutters Kuvasz.
Vikker pats Kuvasz on the arm. “Feeling better at least, old man?”
“Where’s that nurse?” asks Kuvasz. The 2-1B tilts his head. “There was a nurse here with a very fine rear, I think Rhys and Vikker’d get a kick out of it.” You look at the 2-1B.
“Painkillers,” says the 2-1B. Ah. That explains it. “Should wear off within the hour.” Kuvasz groans, trying to sit up. The 2-1B gently pushes him back into bed. “In the meantime, he will be ready to join you soon.”
“Thanks, Doc.” You nod. You and Vikker turn around and start walking out of the medbay. “You know, Vik, we got lucky. Real lucky.”
“Wouldn’t have happened if you had left the girl back at the ship,” he says. You roll your eyes. If he didn’t want that, he should have said something. The door out of the medbay opens, and the two of you start heading down the hallway. Technicians and engineers were busy at work removing panels and checking electrical wires, apparently diagnostics after the battle that you had missed. Makes you wonder if Eudora is okay. “Listen, Rhys. I think we need to have a serious talk.”

You sigh, then stop Vikker. “Alright, talk.”
“That girl is going to get us killed,” says Vikker. “I mean, you-know-what is one thing. But come on, you can’t expect her to just hide it.” He holds up a finger, coming up with a idea. “I say we dump her somewhere isolated. Maybe like Lothal or Jakku or something. Then we go about, find that Fleet, we go back to treasure hunting. In fact, forget all this business with Admiral Reike and the Empire. We just go back to doing what we did.”
“Vik, you were the one that got me back working for the Empire again.”
He grunts. “And I have regretted that every day since. I need to stop looking at the easy credits. Look, I’m not forcing you to do this. Hell, I owe you my life, Rhys. You saved me.” He pats you on the chest. “Let me save you for once. I’ll let you think about it, alright?”
You nod, continuing to walk with him back to the ship. “Alright.”

Cutting Misri out? Admittedly, you’ve only known her for at most several months in this venture. Not to mention that she’s been shirking her responsibility lately. What would Kuvasz think though? Hell, what would the droids think? Not that they really have a say in the matter, but they all love her. You can’t have all of your droids deserting on you.
The two of you go down the lift into the hangar where all the big shuttles are kept. Reike’s personal Lambda, Sentinel Landers, and finally your own Lion’s Share. It’s places like this that make you feel at home, really. The black reflective floors, the illumination, the feeling of… you’re not sure what the feeling is but it’s there. Lev meets you at the boarding ramp. “Sir.”
“Lev.” You’re about to pass him up. Vikker does, leaving you behind. You need to check on Misri, see if she’s fixed up anything.
“Sir.” He catches your sleeve, stopping you. He holds up a holopad, which blinks with an incoming message. And not just any holopad. Eudora’s holopad. She’s calling you. “She is calling you.”

Why do people like Barbarians when Paladins, Fighters, and Rangers exist?
Paladin: More versatile than a barbarian, and wears the coolest armour.
Fighter: More skilled than a barbarian and just as strong.
Ranger: Better at survival than a barbarian.
Barbarians are literally "muh rage" and they're not even the best at that. Pic related (a fighter) can outrage any barbarian.
Because Barbarian is fun to say while still sounding Badass.
>>45380325
I would consider Fighter to be the boring one. A fighter is just a guy with a sword, nothing particularly special about him (and in DnD he also tends to suck at, well, fighting: the one thing the class is designed to do). Basically:
>Fighter: Basic Fitin' Man
>Barbarin: Fitin' Man with rage powers
>Paladin: Fitin' Man with holy power
>Ranger: Fitin' Man with innawoods powers
All of them can do the fighting part, but the others also have their own speciality in addition to "I hit it with a sword".
I mean one of my current characters is a Barbarian 4/Paladin 3 right now, with the maneuvers feat kind of like fighter.
What do you think of that?
How do you do a Chaotic Neutral character right?

So after all the tears, blood and semen that was the launching of this book for /tg/ and the warhammer 40k community as a whole. I've decided to see what was all the fuss was about.
And after having reading it I come to the conclusion that the tau have a secret weapon that make all Imperial officers inept.
This was supposed to be a one sided slaughter the planet was suffering a huge blokade, the imperials had numerical advantage to take key location and encicle the city forcing Shadowsun to split her forces even more and weakening their defenses as a whole they decide to land in one location and make a b-line for the city by doing this giving her time to harass the imperial forces and killing field officers.
I've thought the Imperium would have learned from all those humbling deafeats but it seems, that it's to much to ask competence while fighting the Tau

You are Princess Zelda, heir to the throne of Hyrule.
The fallen throne.
The Kingdom has collapsed. Your father, corrupted by Power, was slain in a coup. The young Hero in Green gave his life to ensure you and your attendant Impa escaped the ensuing chaos. The land descended into civil war, bands of warriors under Ganon appeared out of the desert sands, only to vanish as quickly as they appeared.
It has been 10 years since that fateful day. You have been raised by Impa for these last few years, just outside the dusty old town of Kakariko. An uneasy calm has settled, the memories of the Fall still lingering in people's minds. A glimmer of hope entertains many, rumors of those who wish to reunify Hyrule. At the same time, there are also rumors of those with the Power to plunge the world into even greater chaos than before...
You, Zelda Hyrule, have the potential to claim your birthright and restore the Kingdom to what it once was, bring back true peace to the lands. Can you?Should you?Your path ahead is not set in stone; you must chisel it in yourself. What kind of Legend will you create?
Impa tosses the large bag she brought with her over her shoulder, the tall woman pulling the hood of her brown cloak down. "We shouldn't be here for very long, but stay alert. Farmers arriving today, guards are lighter than usual."
"You think something's going to happen." you remark, slinging your own bag over your shoulder, following her towards the Item Shop, spotting people going about their morning business. Quieter than your last few visits, but it's early in the day.
Impa smiles at you as she opens the door. "Most likely just some Bulblins."
"See? Even I can pick up on your hints after the 40th try." you joke, heading in with her.
"Haha! If it isn't my two favorite customers!" a boisterous, friendly voice loudly greets you both, belonging to a muscular, somewhat older man about Impa's height dressed in a red tunic.
"You say that to any pretty face that walks in, Madas." your attendant responds with a soft laugh.
"Ah, but you two know it to be true, yes?" the merchant asks, leaning forward. "So what brings you here today, ma'am?"
Impa sets down her bag on the counter and nods to you to do the same. "Dropping off some spoils."
Madas starts pulling a few items out of the bags. "More Stalfos skulls than usual. And claws... mm, yes... wait..." He takes out a bottle with a small, ghostly figure inside. "Poes?" he asks with a mixed expression of joy and dread.
Impa nods, then turns to you. "You may go out for a bit. Price negotiations should be quick."
The way she says it seems to imply something more than just money talk, but you get the point and step outside, their voices getting quieter as you do. Glancing around you spot a Goron taking pictures with a camera, some kids running around the increasingly annoyed town guards, and a middle-aged man dressed in red and blue overalls in a horse-drawn wagon.
>A. Greet the Goron
>B. Those kids really shouldn't be bothering the town guards
>C. Check up on the arriving farmers, offer assistance

Stage 111: The Difference Between Dragons and Oni.
The fact that you are fasting in order to be worthy of meeting the emissary of Ryujin Owatatsumi only drives home the point you haven't actually eaten in a few days. While you understand, after a basic explanation, that your body can sustain itself as long as your Shen and Chi are balanced within each other and within yourself, it's still a little weird not to need to eat. You also need to find out if the immortality granted by the flesh of a ningyo has anything to do with it.
At this point nothing should surprise you, but you know better than to even think that horrible curse.
Still, it does allow you the pleasure and effort of making lunch for your family, and your new friend, a half-kappa by the name of Toshida Ginka, who has gotten you added on to the Ama Pearl Diving schedule for today. The act of preparing a meal also gives you a chance to be quiet and think about a few things, while allowing your family to get used to your new friend, and vice versa.
This last was hampered a bit at first by Yuuhi-chan threatening to behead your new friend; she apparently sensed some sort of danger in associating with her. Fortunately – or perhaps unfortunately – the threat is indirect, and you were able to gently talk Yuuhi-chan down. The other's helped as well, and now Ginka, though a little overwhelmed, is happily sharing stories and tea with your family, including a much more cheerful Yuuhi. The problem is that Yuuhi, being an enlightened immortal and strangely disconnected from the here-and-now, was absolutely certain about the threat, even if she didn't quite understand the source or how it worked.
>>45377892
You might be able to get more information from her, but then again, you might not. Not from lack of interest in helping on her part, but simply because she's Yuuhi. There are of course other situations to think on. If Yuuhi-chan did sense a threat, then you have a hunch that the threat may be more immediate, even if it isn't directly from Ginka-san. You might have to send someone to investigate. Alternatively, you could see if Akari-chan is ready to travel; her injuries were pretty bad, but she has been resting. Leaving a day early could make a difference. But there is also the matter of meeting your father's representative. Or worse, your father himself.
As you slice the pickles with your claws, you glance at the small group of mostly relaxed and almost entirely happy people that you have with you. Even though your family is not all here, there is still a warmth, a togetherness that makes you feel reassured they are all safe and healthy. You're going to have to keep it that way for a little longer; you'll be heading home soon, and travel is always perilous when dealing with rich and clever enemies, and you have a lot of both.
[] Call Yuuhi-chan over to ask about her feeling of danger.
[] Get Yui-chan's help and ask her what she thinks of Akari's health.
[] Distract your priestess and ask about the offering you'll be making.
[] Ask Inau-kun if she'd do you a favor and have a look around.
[] Screw it. There's time for that later – everyone needs to eat.

What was the fucking point of this strip? I always thought that "words-words" anons are just exaggerating, but this strip says nothing in more than a hundred words.
Tell me your about your setting.
Explain how you deal with problems like:
This culture already exists in the real world. Warhammer has already done it. D&D has already done it. Everything you think of has already been done. Your work is purely derivative. How do you find the will to live? Why do you think your setting is any good?
How does magic WORK?
How do gods work?
Do different factions worship the same gods?
Isn't it really lame that all the evil guys dress evil?
Do you have evil guys that dress normally?
What's the difference between a zombie, a ghoul, a ghost, a skeleton etc
Why is a skeleton fast but a zombie slow?
How do each of these things get made?
Is necromancy evil?
How do creatures like orcs reproduce? How do they make their technology?
How do you come up with cultures for non-human creatures?
Isn't it a bit lame to just give real world human cultures to fictional creatures?
Isn't it weird when Ogres and Chinese-inspired humans have more similar cultures than do European-inspired humans and Chinese-inspired humans?
Don't you feel like a hack using your very limited "knowledge" of real world cultures to create ones for your world?
Isn't it really lame that your world is just a copy of the real world with some slight name changes?
>>45377158
Isn't it also lame when your humans have realistic cultures but the cultures for non-humans are really just "themes", eg "Dark Dwarves", "Wood Elves", "High Elves"?
What are "elements"?
Does real world science exist in your world?
Are there atoms and molecules etc?
If the wizards are so smart then why haven't they discovered gunpowder or calculus yet?
>>45377158
Shit! Nice questions. I'm just going to take a gander at a few of these.
>How do you find the will to live?
Making something is better than making nothing: I think the act of creating something in a society of passive consumerism is worthy in of itself, even if the stuff you create is utter shit.
>How does magic WORK?
It doesn't "work". Magic should only follow a set of rules when you absolutely need it to, like in a video game or when someones playing a wizard and you need to give them guidelines. Giving magic rules is a limitation you have to work with sometimes, not the goal.
>Is necromancy evil?
I don't think so.
>How do creatures like orcs reproduce?

The second took place in a village outside of Toshi Ranbo that had it's entire populace was massacred by the Hateru Ninja Clan. Lured there by a message sent from my senpai, the famous duelist and magistrate Uesugi Seijuro no Mirumoto, I ended up fending off a huge team of shinobi killers by myself and succeeded, though I was poisoned nearly fatally for my efforts. Seijuro-senpai and his wife (whom I have yet to meet) are nursing me back to health. I have discovered that the Hateru Ninja serve someone called the Shogun of the Dark, and that this mysterious figure has a group of elite killers under his service called the Rokki-Dan.
>From the Journal of Toku Jubei, 1406 Isawa Calender
>PS: If my handwriting is different in this entry, it is because I'm dictating it to my senpai as I am still bedridden and unable to properly write.
"I can't believe you're making me do this," Seijuro says as he delicately uses your borrowed sumi set in the small cabin to write the post-script of your journal entry. "Why can't you just write this out yourself later?"
"Because I could die at pretty much ANY time. I've been fighting bandits and ninjas and ronin and yakuza for years now, how the hell am I gonna know when I next have time to write in my journal? Your handwriting had better be decent too, this is already a serious bit of trust I'm giving you senpai," you say severely.
"I don't even know why you insist on doing it. You've been writing in this ever since I first met you," he notes, frowning as he concentrates on the calligraphy.
"Because it's a family tradition. All of the Toku family keep journals that we might pass onto our descendents and keep the journals of our ancestors. That way we can know the true thoughts and feelings of those of us who came before rather then rely purely on oral history, rumors, and hearsay. And in MY case that's especially important because there's so much misinformation out there about me!" you explain with absolute seriousness.

>When we last left our heroes, they had just carried out their first mission in tracking down what remains of the Trioxin board members, who have each left clues on a trail leading to the whereabouts of Patient Zero, the source of the virus outbreak. This lead them to the City ballroom, where they found the re-animated Jeremy Barker being kept as a pet by a wannabe songstress named Ruby Starlight with an experimental pheromone that prevented the zombies from attacking her. Despite a truly ghastly number of critical failure rolls, the group somehow managed to kill Ruby Starlight, and make it out alive with the pheromone and the map co-ordinates to the next Trioxin board member... and only with some temporary loss of feeling throughout your entire body.
You pull up to The Fort, returning from your last mission. You're still unable to walk properly on your own strength after the nasty fall you suffered in the ballroom, but Sara has more than enough strength to carry you inside. You, Christine and Sara are all welcomed inside by the others, Annie gasping as she sees the condition you are in.
"Oh god, Charlie! Are you okay?"
"It was a close one, but I'll be fine," you answer, reassuring her. "The doc will take a look at it as soon as we settle in."
"How did it go?" Eric asked Christine.
"Better than expected," Christine answered. "We managed to extract the location of Samuel Hitchcock. And we found this." She holds up the vial of Ruby Starlight's perfume. "A pheromone, which temporarily causes the undead to see you as one of their own. It appears that Trioxin were working on even more than we thought. Let us study this quick, and hopefully we will be able to produce more for our own uses."
