Chivalry’s finest military expression in contemporary eyes was the famous Combat of the Thirty, which occured on 26th March 1351. An action of the perennial conflict in Brittany [part of the Hundred Years War], it began with issued by Jean de Beaumanoir, a captain of Charles of Blois supported by the King of France, to Robert Bemborough, a captain of Jean de Montfort supported by the King of England. When their partisans clamored to join, a combat of thirty on each side was agreed upon. Terms were arranged, the site was chosen, and after participants heard mass and exchanged courtesies, the fight commenced.

With swords, bear-spears, daggers, and axes, they fought savagely until four on the French side and two on the English were slain and a recess was called. Bleeding and exhausted, Beaumanoir called for a drink, eliciting the era’s most memorable reply: “Drink thy blood, Beaumanoir, and thy thirst will pass!” Resuming, the combatants fought until the French side prevailed and every one of the survivors on either side was wounded. Bramborough and eight of his party were killed, the rest taken prisoner and held for ransom. In the wide discussion the affair aroused, ‘some held it as a very poor thing and others as a very swaggering business,’ with the admirers dominating.

The motivation for the combat is unclear. The earliest written sources present it as a purely chivalric exercise, undertaken to honour the ladies for whom the knights were fighting: referring to Joan, Duchess of Brittany (House of Blois) and Joanna of Flanders (House of Montfort). These women were leading the two factions at the time, as Joan's husband was in captivity and Joanna's was dead (her son was a young child at the time). This is the account given by the contemporary chroniclers Jean le Bel and Jean Froissart, both of whom present the conflict as purely a matter of honour with no personal animosity involved.

Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Thief Quest, a continuation of Mortal Kombat Konquest.

When we last left our on-the-up-and-coming hero, he journeyed with Nitara east across the sea. During the voyage they grew closer after she delivered the traitor Draken to him for revenge, and Cao began a relationship with her despite his initial reservations against opening up to the vampire woman. When they reached the Golden Desert in the east and discovered an ancient kingdom to rest in during the day, it was discovered that Reptile had been following them. After fending off the saurian, Cao and Nitara spent a night of passion together, from which he is now waking up...

Cao sits on the edge of the bed, his pants loosely pulled on while he sits in contemplation. Nearby is Nitara, his ally and, now, lover. She is currently dressing herself and pulling together their discarded clothing from various corners of the room. He is silent as she hums a bit, stretching out her limbs and long legs. Cao tries not to think too hard about them; they give him ideas that make his head swim a bit and his stomach feel light. From the corners of his eyes he watches her. It seems so strange to him that she can just casually resume her business despite what they did, or rather what she did to him.

She seems to notice and stops for a moment. "You're quiet," she notes with a small smile. "Something the matter?"

"Just... I don't know," he replies, feeling a bit awkward. He isn't certain how to properly act around her now that they have grown so much closer. She picks up on this and approaches, sitting next to him.

"You needn't feel like you have to act differently, you know," she advises him. "Don't think too hard. You might hurt something."

He rolls his eyes a bit at her playful teasing and looks away. "I guess I just... I never expected it would be quite like... it was."

"Is that a good thing?"

"I think so," he says. "But I don't know."

"You regret it?"

"No!" he's quick to exclaim, turning back. "No, not that. I just don't know what comes next."

She shrugs, as if it is so obvious. "We continue on our quest. We part ways afterwards. I'll be with my people and you'll be with your sisters."
>>
He's silent for another moment and she smiles. "Aww, Cao, you're not growing too attached, are you?"

"Are you not?" he whispers.

She faces him fully. "Cao, what we did was great fun. I certainly got what I wanted out of it and I like to think you got quite a lot of something too," she smiles and he blushes a bit. "And while I would love to continue our little escapades, you've already made up your mind, haven't you?"

"I have," he replies softly. "I guess I'll just... miss you when it's over."

She gives him a sweet smile and pulls him into a hug before giving him a kiss. "I will too," she says with honesty. "But we should get going. The sun is setting and we'll need all the time we can to cross the remainder of the Golden Desert into the Ashlands."

Legged war vehicles, mech(s)(a) if you will, do you like them?

Should settings try to justify them, or should they be pure rule of cool?
321 posts and 90 images submitted.
>>
Settings have their own narrative genre. If a setting includes mechs, it should have them in a way that fits the genre.

As an example, if I made a setting themed on near future military science fiction, I would restrict mechs to those based on real-world designs. If I made a more fantasy-themed setting, any mechs there would draw inspiration from monsters and mythic heroes.

1: There's an easily produced particle that completely blocks all forms of radio and electromagnetic detection, so over-the-horizon attacks are basically impossible without spotters and hard-wired communications in place.
2a: A humanoid body can turn along multiple axis without using reactive fuel while in space by bending and twisting along the joints. This is fairly important as it extends operation time.
2b: A humanoid body is intuitively controllable by a human. You know what a waist can do. You know what your arms can do. You know what your legs can do. The robot is based on those things, so you know instinctively what the robot's waist, arms, and legs can do.

It's not exactly hard science (Since that would take into account good laser communications and optical sensing computers) but it works for what it's trying to do, which is justify giant robots.

I'll give it a shot, pic related is the majority of Cadogan Wick, covered in mist and chock full of ghosts. The only living humans survive in castles, forced to make use of all manner of undead just to make up the numbers.

>Give me the overview of your nations in one sentence. Bonus points for humor.

Used to be shining theocratic empire now a ghost of it's former self thanks to a goddess becoming angered by their hubris.

>Is there a particular aspect of your setting you're very proud of? Tell us about it.

The setting has an Irish Catholic theme because I wanted to involve my father, who I have recently reconnected with and has taken an interest in creative worldbuilding games.

Okay space opera bros, I need some serious help.

Maybe you guys have run into this problem too.

I'm writing a story in a fictional universe with 5 different planets, and at the beginning of each chapter I want to state the date and time of both GST (galactic standard time) and the local planet's calendar.

For example, something like this

Planet Name - City, Country - District

GST: January 1st, 384 - 19:34
Local Time: March 3rd, 4003 - 20:30

Let's say GST is exactly 1:1 with our Earth's calendar (Except every month has 30 days), but Planet Auron's calendar is as follows.

Year = 11 months
Month = 28 days
Day = 20 hours
Hour = 100 mins
Minute = 100 secs
Second = ½ a galactic second

What sort of mathematical equation would I have to use in order to keep up with this so as time progresses, I can keep an accurate time of all the calendars. For example, let's say in a later chapter I put

Planet Name - City, Country - District

GST: January 8th, 384 - 19:34
Local Time: ????????

Do you get what I'm asking? It's very hard to put into words.

Is this effort even worth it? What can I do to get around this? It's making me not even want to do a space opera setting.

Maybe just put in the date, but not the local time? Unless your plot requires the readers to be aware that what is happening takes place at 0800 hours, and then flashbacks to 0545 hours, before flashing forward to 2333 hours.

Listen, you're not bringing Von Der Heydte to negate Reich Devised. It's one of the reasons why you might bring him, but you're actually bringing him because of Rally Once More, and Panzerfaust Trap Teams. Panzerfaust Trap Teams are just fucking unpleasant. Literally the only place the enemy is safe from them, their own deployment zone. They can spring up almost anywhere, in bulletproof cover, are concealed while they shoot, or can just go straight to the assault. Imagine springing up behind Jagdtigers, or if there's a piece of terrain 4'/10cm away from the tanks in question, you get the Sneaking up on tanks rule, And to cap it all off, the little bastards count for exactly nothing. So even if you do winkle them out of their fucking holes, you just wasted time while the Fallschirmjäger on the other side of the table laugh at you.
