Welcome to the thread for d20 station, a rules light Space Station 13 server.

>What is Space Station 13?
It's a 2D top down atmospherics simulator with who dun it gameplay layered on top. Each crew member aboard the station has a specific job to perform, while a select few are selected to be traitors or antagonists (assasain/spy/thief).

>How do I get this game?
You'll need to download the BYOND client. There's games other than SS13, but enter those at your own risk.
BYOND Download link: http://www.byond.com/download/
You'll also want a BYOND account, which gives you a ckey so you can save preferences and be recognized by the game. It's highly recommended to make an account if you're experiencing connection issues or don't want to be a fat tourist/starving space bum.

To connect: Open BYOND, click the gear in the upper right. Click "Open Location" and paste in the IP below.
byond://76.16.8.127:28014 OR byond://d20station.ddns.net:28014

>How do I play
Use OOC and ask someone for help on how to play. People will almost always help you get a grip of the game if you're polite about it, just don't reveal too much in-round information in OOC. There's also wikis deticated to documenting the spaceman way of life, but they vary widely from server to server.

>What are the rules?
The rules are very relaxed and admins try to take a hands-off approach to administrating. Admins will generally only intervene if someone is explicitly playing to ruin the game or being a dick. Reminder to read the rules in-game.

>What map/code do you run?
We run a heavily modified Ministation map with now pretty much completely custom code. Most jobs on Ministation are merged with similar counterparts and head roles have been re-enabled.

>D20 wiki where?
http://robustvinyl.com/ss13/wiki/

>When does everyone play?
Check out the server pop graph to see when people are playing: http://www.ss13.se/servers/2284/

>Who are these tripfaggots?
Usually admins/coders in the server.

So what's the best way to get yellow gloves? I can find a pair in the tool room across the bar but those don't seem to help against shocks

being an engineer you spawn with them
they can be found in yellow toolboxes sometimes as well, and if all else fails, latex gloves give you a partial resistance to the electrical damage, and can be easily acquired in medbay

Help me /tg/, I need pics of magic/fantasy rifles.

I am going to be doing my first D&D session later on today and have my eyes set on the Paladin. On the surface he is everything I want in a class: durable/tanky, wears plate armour and utilizes shield and swords.

Problem is when I read through the description it sounds like upholding justice is their #1 motivation and I can't think much else besides a goody two shoes or an overzealous justice fanatic akin to a Witch Hunter.

What other personalities could I give to provide me some more breathing space in regards to motivations, character flaws and so on?

I was considering a Paladin who on the surface is a justice upholding fellow but in truth is using it as a mental crutch to stop him from falling to his more violent impulses. I don't want it too deep but I don't want it 2-d either.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

By the book in 5th edition the paladin doesn't have any alignment restrictions now.
Play whoever you want and just use the Paladin class features.
>>
>>47625279
That's fine. The GM was pretty liberal in his explanation on what he was looking for, so I don't think the alignments are going to be followed too strictly.

My main issue is coming up with a character who isn't too farfetched like "Hammer Mc Hammerson" with his big hammer of smashiness, but isn't too heavy cause, since we're all beginners I think we're all going to be deers in headlights.

Would you have any experience of interesting Paladin characters you've worked with with which I could see examples of?

>a Paladin who on the surface is a justice upholding fellow but in truth is using it as a mental crutch to stop him from falling to his more violent impulses

This seems good. D&D doesn't lend itself to subtlety, though, so I could see this being particularly fun if your character has a habit of struggling with these violent tendencies aloud.

Other fun Paladins I've played with:

>a Paladin who is "too old for this shit," grizzled, war-weary, and taking no pleasure in violence, merely a grim acceptance of its necessity

> a Paladin who is overly idealistic, naive, inexperienced and easily misled - this type plays well with others who may not want to stick to law and justice

>a Paladin with a ridiculous sense of chivalry or fairness, the type to shout "Draw your weapons!" to an enemy before an ambush, highly vain, a glory-seeker

Basically Paladins are cheeseballs, with highly exaggerated character traits. If you can check your sense of irony at the door you'll have a blast!

> A Note About Pronouns
> "The male pronoun (he, him, his) is used exclusively throughout the AD&D game rules. We hope that this won't be construed by anyone to be an attempt to exclude females from the game or imply their exclusion. Centuries of use have neutered the male pronoun. In written material it is clear, concise, and familiar. Nothing else is. "

Times change. All order is fleeting. Adapt or perish.

Not really. This shit is cyclical: The roaring 20s was the height of sexual freedom. Then there was WWII, and everything went back to normal. After that, there was the Summer of Love, which became the Autumn of Discontent and the Winter of Selling-Out Big Time.

We're just waiting for the next war.

>In this setting, everything is made from the greek elements
>However, these fundamental partics are joined with point-like spirits
>these spirits create nearly identical behavior to real world chemistry
>However, in the hands of a common person, the spirits denature
>Thus you have an actual class of alchemists
>Alchemists are the only people who can refine and use gun powder
>Gun are actually remarkably advanced, early revolvers and what not
>But alchemists are barely a single percentage of the population
>So the world is still in quasi medieval stasis
>But there are also heroes running around with guns and swords fighting these monsters

I think getting down to subatomic particles is overbaking it. I've made that same mistake before, trying to overthink worldbuilding. I realized that players simply don't notice or care. Better to use broad genre conventions, even better, ask them what they want to make and fit their ideas into the world. If someone wants to play gun-alchemist, great. If not, then something else. But if you already make the world into Gun-Alchemy Land and the players have different ideas, they are going to be board and you run the risk of make cool Gun Alchemist DMNPCs and ignoring the players.
>>
Not a bad mystic bullshit explanation. Not necessary, IMO, but if it's the sort of thing you and your group enjoy, go for it.

>electrons are spirits
>using this only to make black powder
Lame. Be a necromancer instead. talk to the spirits. enforce complete molecular control of matter, using your own power to catalyze chemical reactions.
Have a particularly difficult enemy to deal with? simply transmute all the oxygen in his lungs into ozone.
Lost in the woods without food? Find a stick, and transmute the cellulose of the wood into sucrose/starch.

If you have such a powerful control over the very laws of nature, why would you use them only to make guns?

To field an ig tank commander, does the tank commander have to dangerously stick his head out of the vehicle? Can I field one with the top of the tank closed.
20 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>47624283
The chances of getting shot by a lost bullet are affordable considering the superior tactical view you get sticking your head out. This is the IG, son.
>>
There were actually small view ports in the cupola just so that in a serious firefight the commander could still have some vision. That's just our tanks though, IG might not care if the commander gets shot up a bit.
>>
Raising your head out improves your awareness fucking lot because the view ports that vehicles have have small FoV. In combat situation it is not adviced because dead commander means dead tank. But you can open the hatch a little and peek out. Those gem like things on IG tank are the view ports btw

>and I'm also a audio-visual kind of learner

In that case I'd recommend some background music and a few books.

Alan Williams, The Sword and the Crucible
Alan William,s the Knight and the Blast Furnace
Edge & Paddock, Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight
Oakeshott, The Archaeology of Weapons
Oakeshott, European Weapons and Armour
Hall, Weapons and Warfare in Renaissance Europe
Waldman, Hafted Weapons in Medieval and Renaissance Europe
Fiorate et.al, Blood Red Roses (somewhat whitewashed such, they don't like saying "massacred prisoners")
Capwell, Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450

Videos... sadly often not that great. Lindy certainly being one I don't care for. The Weapons the made Britain documentaries aren't terrible at least, maybe try looking for those. On the made of youtube side Tod Todeschini has some neat bits on crossbows at least, and TheRealGaldiatores have a few neat looking demo videos from the HEMA side of things. There's also this one that I've found rather interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMkGF3EqUjU
>>
Lets get the ball rolling.
Tell us why Skallagrim, Schola Gladiatoria and Lindybeige are bad sources, along with any other youtube channels you feel the need to inform people of.

The same as in the real world. Dishes differ from nation to nation / culture to culture.

Either more refined as humans, or they are vegetarians, or living plants that can drive roots in the earth to "eat".

Purely carnivores, including bugs, insects and worms.

Giant mushrooms, roots, and bugs.

What's good about it? What sucks about it?
Is it even worth a shit?
>>

I'll just repeat what I've said before...

D&D is a lingua franca that enables you to easily communicate with a lot of people. If you say "I made a new RPG, what do you think of it?" chances are not a lot of people are going to go through the trouble to read over it. And why would they? It's serious investment of time just to learn the basics of what you're doing, and that time may be wasted, as your system may suck or just not be the sort of thing the reader is into. But with D&D you have already have a foundation, so that people don't need to learn things from scratch. So you can present a game that's D&D except X, Y and Z. Everybody's up to speed on the D&D part, so they just need to examine X, Y and Z. And they have a pretty good basis for judging those things you changed or added because they know the context well and can be like "X seems a lot more powerful than the rules as written, and would probably make clerics too powerful."

Why old school D&D as opposed to new school? It's simpler and more base-level. This makes it easier to work with. It also has historical significance in that it underlies and informs newer editions of D&D. So ultimately it's a better universal tongue. Plus, it's dead and buried, at least in its official, commercial form. This means that the rules aren't changing underneath your feet and there's been enough time for us to have some perspective on it (and not be in the middle of edition war shit-flinging).

A mysterious overly-American alien travelling from far into the cycles of the universe's incarnations appears and warns the party of a eldtritch horror waifu, a brilliant but criminally insane scientist, ego maniac, and galaxy wide merchant who is equivilant to space-walmart, and a Teen boy from CCC city who is currently being argued amongst the gods to be assinated before he can arise to godhood himself.

He basically warned us that we had inadvertandly antagonized a galactic civilization so old and organized that we would be forced to fight a losing battle for the next several decades before getting annihilated.

To that end he sent us to quest for a couple of Macguffins, a magic mirror for the space-jew, a legendary weapon made from the armor remains of the universes' most powerful hero of legend, and a hyper powerful fertility icon for the eldtrich horror waifu.

God help us she's got local terraformed moons teeming with unholy spawn. pls send help.

Its because elves in most setting tend to be spend all their time bitching about shit, expecting special treatment and being insufferably smug with nothing to be smug about.

And this often attracts a certain type of player and so all elf players get tarred with the same brush.

I've been in your situation before.

It gets better

But you gotta put in the effort

I'm 100% sure you're groups are cool with you. If they weren't, they'd make it obvious. It's probably just low self-esteem making you think everyone hates you when it's usually never the case

If you like tabletops see if there's a boardgame meetup group in your town. Check meetup.com, there's probably at least one group for an activity you like

Try to get some exercise in and eat well, drink lots of water and meditate. Look up CBT exercises and self help forums for folks to talk to for motivation

You will pull yourself out of that rut eventually. Just take it one day at a time.

As for me, im tired after pulling an all nighter. Having a smoke out in my backyard while browsing tg, drafting up a new rp group for some friends on my tablet and playing hearthstone on my phone.

Bout to go to sleep soonish i guess but if you need someone to talk to I'll be online later

Keep cool, man.

Don't bother trying to salvage your old social life and ways.
Make a cooler one, a better one.
Change your name, treat yourself well, be outgoing, do make that move and chat to that guy/girl at the nearest bar. You have seemingly lost interest in your life, so why not do all the crazy stuff that you could not before. Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
But always remember this key phrase.
You have felt hardship and pain. This however has made you aware more of life. The world desperately needs people like you, wants people like you. You do not burden another when you talk to them, but impart valuable information of a different view of life.
Don't kill yourself, we need guys like you.
