You have all the rights in the world to be a critic if you read through a thread
I agree it's more wordy than I had hoped, but I chose to give players a picture of what the youth of the haracter is exactly like, but most of it would be probably boring to play so I made green out of it
Maybe it was an error, I'm not sure

I don't know enough about ultrasound and animals being able to hear it to contest it. I don't know if the blizzard we were walking through would be able to affect it. Just thought it odd that changelings could do it. They can already transform and look like a pony, now they can do that too?

I guess it would be fine if they were in their changeling form but he was a pony when we got him and i always thought transformations were more restrictive if that makes sense.

So how much freedom do you allow in your cyoa? Let's say the setting is a pirate ship and the mc is a pirate pone on board. When suddenly, OH NO! GIANT CRAB! But then the players decide to shitpost and say they want the mc to do her taxes right then and there. Do you let them? Do you let them completely ignore the danger and disrupt the flow of the game? Do you make the crab attack the mc anyway and then the players say they dodge the attack and escape in a life raft and do more taxes? Do you have the monster attack the raft and OH MY GOD THIS QM IS A FAGGOT JUST FUCK OFF!

Is that YOU? Or do you say that they can't do their taxes and have to fight the GOD YOU ARE A FAGGOT! FUCK THIS GAME!
>>
>>27676182
I'm sorry?
>>
>>27676195
How do you keep the game flowing without railroading or hand holding in the slightest? Players bitch no matter what.
>>
>>27676208
>Players bitch no matter what.
This is true, and I find that it's best just to let them bitch.
People who bitch at the QM are the worst. Speaking both as a player and a QM.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to ignore the bitching and keep the game moving.

In your example, though, if everyone decided to ignore the incoming threat, I would have the monster attack the ship, do a minor amount of damage and let them know I'm serious.

If they continued fucking around, I'd bring the hammer down. Kill off a party member, badly injure the MC.

If they still continue doing their taxes, then it's clear they don't want to play anymore, and I'd probably consider killing the MC.

Of course, if you're playing an adventure where you encourage and enjoy shitposting, then that's different, but in your situation, that's what I'd do.
>>
>>27676306
But what if the railroading is because the QM is just bad? In the quest Planeswalker. In less than 10 posts, the QM managed to let our home village get destroyed, have a disease run rampant, have corrupted plants spread like wildfire, and have our mom get disintegrated when we try to teleport her and us away. Player actions were basically disregarded at every step. Should we be allowed to complain about that?
>>
>>27676371

I am suddenly glad I didn't bother picking this quest up.
>>
>>27676371
Criticism is valid, certainly.

There's a difference between bitching and valid complaints.
>>
>>27676378
>>27676371
Yeah. I saw all that happen, I wasn't very happy. Not sure if I will head back to that quest.
>>
>>27676371
Seems like the QM had exactly one way this intro was going to go, and player input was meaningless
>>
>>27676423
He actually said it was avoidable despite us not getting a chance to avoid it.
>>
>>27676442
Yeah, he knocked our character out for three days. At that point everything gone to shit!
>>
>>27676442
Nah. He said he wanted the whole thing to start on a tragedy. His excuse was "I was just trying to be realistic. Those magical metal balls you brought home were actually dangerous corrupted plant seeds an you should've never brought em. Anyways, you have magic. Now go fix everything you did."
>>
>>27676473
Even though the seeds acted more like slow-picking-up-pace bullets. How were we suppose to know they were seeds?
>>
>>27676489
He wasn't expecting us to know. He kept making subtle suggestions every post saying that we should find a container to take them back. He WANTED it to happen.
>>
>>27676473
>no way to know we brought the evil seeds
>trying to be realistic

Beautiful.
>>
>>27676473
Shouldn't have brought them despite having them act in a very strange manner infront of a character who's core trait is curiosity. Than he knocked us out for somewhere between three days and a week and wake us up just in time for everything to go to hell. He also said that we could've found out how dangerous they were before everything went wrong, but we had no input over that period of time.
>>
>>27676473
Oh, so he's a le ebin ruseman QM?
>>
>>27676526
Yep. Every suggestion we made in that quest was literally a narrow escape from an unexpected "oh no! you died" and we didn't even know it.

When we teleported into a desert. There was a sandstorm coming. We debated whether we should take refuge in the giant walled city or just teleport back home. When we teleported home and came back to the desert, the city was just a pile of rubble.

Another one was when we tried to open some magical door contraption. Everyone suggested try to power it with a lightning bolt. At the last second, I said let our storm golem do it instead of us..... the storm golem exploded when he casted the lightning bolt.

>get popularity points
I understand that, but don't. Popularity means lots of players, and lots of different players with different opinions, timezones, and agendas. That's how you end up with three threads long arguments. And as you can easily tell, they're not enjoyable for anyone, QM, players, or readers. See M&M, Dirty Work

>just become relevant
Now that's something I understand. You want people to acknowledge your presence and think you're doing a good job in general, so that you can feel your thread (and you, by extension) deserve their place on the board.
Well, good news: >pic related are the threads you could potentially bump off the board with your new thread.
People will usually bitch because of useless / repeated bumping, tripfag circlejerks, and threads that can be driven and contributed to by one person only. There are less complaints for new content, or things people like. And you'll never know if people dislike your thing until you actually start it - or at least pitch your idea here, for a CYOA.

>not for fun
If you don't enjoy it, nobody is going to enjoy it. See that one infamous retconned demotion in Threshold.
Sometimes you will have to force yourself a bit, especially if you want your thing to keep being a thing for a long time. But if you get absolutely no satisfaction out of it, if you don't like or aren't proud of what you do, then there is little to no point in doing it.

>i think running will be fun and I hope everyone likes my quest and me!
I hope so to, anon. I'll play your shit.

>i think i could make myself run a few threads to get others to like me

>I hope so to, anon. I'll play your shit if I'll like it.
FTFY. Nobody plays everything.
>>
>>27679946
Fine, "I'll TRY to play your shit". Better? I'll admit to dropping crap quests, but I at least try pretty much everything. I wouldn't even try out "I'm running out of obligation to make people like me: the quest".
>>
>>27679974
Yes, better. I try every new quest (unless it's blatantly lewd) too.
>>
Speaking of reasons to play or drop a quest, what about run schedule?

Just a few hours every weeknight, dead during the week and comes back for a bit on weekends. On and off semi-randomly. Long hiatuses but sure to come back eventually.

Just how important is runtime consistency?
>>
>>27679974
>>27679990
Doxels pls.
>>
>>27680038
Quite. Players notice QMs post patterns, and that affects who's around to keep the thread bumped. Plus with a regular schedule you don't have to keep informing everyone you're running. Without that, well you can always just monitor your thread and update the general when you run.
>>
>>27680038
>Just how important is runtime consistency?
Not even remotely. As long as you say when you'll run and don't just disappear, nobody gives a shit.

>Hey guys, I'm not going to be able to run this week, but next week I can run every day but only in the afternoon, and after that just weekends.
Thanks for letting us know.
>>
>>27680038
Nobody gives a fuck about the run schedule so long as you actually hold your word and run by it.
Just look at Pyrefly: He kept promising to return this day and that day, yet he never did. And now his CYOA is pretty much dead because of it.
>>
>>27680064

>>
>>27680038
Your schedule needs to match how you run. If you run weekly then each week's session should feel like there was solid progression. Daily doesn't have to deal with that since it has constant engagement. As long as your schedule matches how you run and you hold to what you say then you can do whatever.
>>
>>27680038
I say it very important. Consistency of schedule and run time are a part of why my favorite cyoas are my favorite.

I'd be more like the kid who plays with his things but ends up accidentally crushing them no matter what he does, and wishes he could play like the other kids, and then the other kids never want to give him their pones because they know he will break them too. And this makes him sad, not because they don't want to give him their toys, but because he knows it's true, and even though he tries, oh my god does he try, he tries all the time in this institution to just make his ponies happy, it just never happens.

No matter how much I may care for these ponies , as a QM I must remain as impartial as I can.

Fluttershy is Unimpressed.gif
359 KB, 404x393
Can someone please explain this whole cyoa thing to me? From what I've seen here in the few threads I've dropped into, the qm offers a setting and maybe a main character and then players control everything by saying an npc has appeared or something else happens and then the qm flavors it up a bit. But in an actual cyoa story book or visual novel, the author controls the npcs and setting and the players control the main character for better or for worse. The difference being that everything is an ongoing scenario instead of freeform all the way. So which is it being used here? I want to join the fun, too.
>>
>>27683109
The second.

The players only control the main character, QM does everything else.
>>
>>27683118
That doesn't appear to be the case, Anon.
>>
>>27683109
Most CYOAs on /mlp/ have the players only control the MC and the QM controls everything else.
If you want to participate, go into a thread that looks interesting, catch up on the story, and then suggest an action for the MC to preform.
>>
>>27683136
I haven't seen a single CYOA where that's not the case.
>>
What is specifically required of a qm?
>>
>>27683136
What threads are you looking at?
You are talking about /mlp/ CYOAs right?
>>
>>27683109
Here, I'm just going to highlight the parts of your post that you got right.
>the author controls the npcs and setting and the players control the main character
>everything is an ongoing scenario
There, done. Now you know how CYOAs work.

>>27683136
I have no idea what quests you are looking at, anon.
>>
>>27683184
To run the quest.
>>
>>27683184
To provide the setting, NPCs, and MC.
The players characterize the MC and say what they do.
>>
>>27683205
Then what should a qm not do? If the qm must ensure the game must continue, and is supposed to progress the game based on the player's actions, then how can one get it wrong if everything is made up on the fly with some pre-scripted stuff thrown in?
>>
>>27683224
>Then what should a qm not do?
Not run the quest.
>>
>>27683224
>Then what should a qm not do?
Trivialize player input or make them feel like they're just along for the ride in a greentext.
>>
>>27683224
Ignore player input, punish the players for no reason, say they're going to run and then not run, put humans in their quest (unless they're nips), or put systems in their quest (unless they're Hiji).

it's the guy that did that noir detective CYOA a bit ago, and then my life went turbulent and i never continued.

question is, should i continue, is there still interest?

because, if their isn't i had this idea for a cyoa that was inspired by turning different eras of american culture and turning them pony, episodic in nature, liike- going cross country in a 30 ford in the eyes of pinkie and rainbow, going to surf city, or some shit.

thoughts?
