Having read about half of it so far I really love the characters and the way the adventure has gone so far.

MC's a gunslinging bitch of a bounty hunter, with a bumbling yet (in his own way) competent companion, indebted to her and dragged along to make himself useful.

Ok, simple answers.

The fic was meant to be a colt cuddler fic. It just went places and had a lot less cuddling than I had thought.
Lesson 1.
Cuddling is hard if you don't have furniture.

The food focus was supposed to just be a way to chat, given previous points on talking head syndrome.

The backstories were made with contact from the owners, CaptainHoers and Focal Length.
These backstories are preliminary, the ideas made and were provided by them in a general sense.
THeir statements here are a bit odd, given this.
Lesson 2:
People seem to be cagey on their OCs, getting them on record is good.

The lack of sex was on purpose.
I did not want to write a sex fic, and if I actually hold to what I have going on, the next entry to the smut doc will be a long ways off.
This isn't something bad, I just want to be known for more than porn.
Mostly because I actually paid to register my trip as a DNS record, so I am now stuck with it.
Lesson 3:
Keep everything separate, even your name

So really all this was was a simple writing thing I made for the IRC, and it made me happy with that.
Which is really what counts, seeing as nobody is paying me for this.

Like really, its a bit awkward when I look at people doing commissions and then see what I've done.

You ever just have one of those long boring depressed stretches in life?
The sort where you can function normally, but its just all hollow and you know you need something?
But it will just randomly break and suddenly you don't know what it was that made you sad and depressed?

Well that's not this chapter.
In this one, Murky knows exactly why he is suddenly happy, and what it was the made him sad before.

While deathbed reveleations are a standard affair for many fictions, few have them acted upon by the deceased.
Even fewer have the deceased decide death is not for them and get better on their own willpower and a fucking magic healing nuke.

Murky now fully has his wings back, they're no longer some feathery tumors on his side, but things he can actually, well, control.
Flights not a thing, but he can now get them out and about for uncontrolled gestures.

That's not the big impact of this chapter though, its the fact that one should never let Glimmerlight throw their birthday party, even if its memorable.
Yep, Murky now has a lifeday party.

Its done fairly well, though it has the classic near ruin of the party by somebody bumping into them.
Frankly, this is pretty bad, as its overdone and doesn't do much beyond give Brom some ethanol.
If it had been a more known figure, it would have worked, but instead its just falling flat.

Now this game of intrigue in Filly, and its grandiose nature, unsurprisingly, Protege is only now aware and not long before when his entire inner circle colluded and betrayed him.
Frankly, this is odd as now that Protoge is up and about, he should just get a memory rip of the mall and have it looked over, along with Ragini for repudiation.
This is really odd, as memory orbs should be a standard affair in these cases, not something only Glimmer/Bonesaw can play with.
As a counter, and great discussion, it could be argued that Protege is still a slave scared to rock the boat and tattle on a master.

Really, it is notable that Red Eye doesn't ask, simply as a matter of father to son.

The chapter itself is rather nice, Murky gets to have fun, and its frankly nice that Fuzzy is this kind.
Obviously this is the part where you realize one moment of joy is supposed to outweigh a lifetime of suffering, that "success is all the sweeter after suffering".
And oh what suffering there has been.
In a week or two.


Really and frankly, the sum of Murky is that everybody barely has time to do anything, what with all the slave work, the time Murky was an outlaw, the time he was a pet, the time he was just flat working...

Fuzzy's glaring flaw here is that he has everything happening at a stupid fast time line, but the story makes it seem all too slow.
I mean the original was awful with its 2 month thing, but this is even worse with its building and growing, plus down time, between events being nothing.
Its bad enough that I am wondering if secretly Filly grants everyone superspeed and perception so they can actually achieve all these acts in the short time they're not slaving away.


Also, the Pinkie Pie can time travel thing is still weird.
Like it made little sense to start, but now is even worse with her predicting her predicting actions and reacting to them in a way that only works by her watching her own alterations and then adjusting before they happen.
I get it being a thing with Murky being some temporal nexus, but still, its an issue given how little sense it makes.
As opposed to just having some ghoul pop in and explain that Murky is being drafted, and if he doesn't like it, then he can take it up with his past self for looking in the funhouse mirror.

Gave up is a strong phrase. Lost motivation, hit her note limit, stares at the new chapter and hates everything she writes, wishes she was better at writing so she could continue, hates herself for being one of /those/ authors. I want to finish it, I really do. I just find myself unable to because every time I write something down I hate it and then go through weeks/months of being unable to come up with any sort of coherent continuity that makes sense and isn't straight up dumb.

I don't really want to give up. Treasure Hunting is a labor of love, but when it comes down to it I really do love my story. I just have issues with it, mostly with me writing, and a lot of those come down to inexperience.

The chapter right now is supposed to finish up with Hidden's recovery and tie up a few loose ends. Where'd the Splinterwolf pup go? What's in the other Ministry buildings? What's up with the mysterious leader of the group there?

The problem is that when it comes down to it, it's all sort of... boring. I don't want to handwave and just have there be a three-day time skip where Hidden is suddenly magically fine because A: I wrote myself into this corner by making it super important and to skipping it's bullshit, and B: I've always had in my head that if Hidden gets seriously wounded she has to take her lumps and heal because otherwise there's no danger. It's one of the big problems I had with PH. If every character can just come back to life repeatedly without consequence, then there's no tension. Who cares if you die? You'll be back two chapters later!

I'm also struggling with some of the NPC motivations. The leader of The Cinch has to have legitimate reasons for what she wants, and there's another character who needs to be a part of that because of how the city is set up. This is less of a problem because I have my ideas... but I'm still struggling on how to portray them without putting up a big sign that says "THESE ARE MY MOTIVATIONS!" because that's bad writing. Especially since Hidden is very much not omniscient and cannot know her motivations without being told them.

There's other issues, like that I constantly find myself unsure what to do with Fine Tune. He always seems to just be standing there and not actually doing or saying anything. And that's absolutely terrible for both him and the readers. It gets worse because, according to my notes from before I wrote even chapter 1... I still have one main party member to add.

That's kinda the sign that your party is bloated. Either you have to deal with letting them sit there, conveniently send them offscreen so that they can work without being narrated, or you have to bloat your chapters to fit in those extra paragraphs of them doing stuff.

I don't think I've quit hit that level with some of my own stuff, but I still sort of get that feeling that I'm neglecting to describe or narrate something in the scene.

It sounds to me like your story's suffering from a serious lack of forward planning. Your core characters' motivations should have at least a bare framework before you start writing, otherwise they're just "there" and you end up clutching at straws trying to justify their inclusion when it's too late to just write them out.

This ties into the thing you mentioned about injuries as well. As soon as you write something new into the story, whether that's a new character, or a major character getting hurt, you need to build up around that and justify its inclusion. If a character getting hurt is a big deal, either justify taking the time to hurt them (your own time AND the reader's!) or don't hurt them unless you absolutely have to.

This was where PH went wrong. Somber would add new characters, locations and even story arcs on a whim, which would require shoring up as part of the larger plot, which meant words, words and more words. And all those words were spent justifying gimmicks rather than actually telling the story. FoE and MN7 have the same issue, but not to the same extent.

Don't worry about subtlety unless you're convinced you can pull it off well. If you actually want to get moving on your writing, plan ahead, write forthrightly and concisely. You can add padding and fluff and clever bits later.

It's not that there's a 'serious' lack of forward planning. I had plenty of forward planning until the point where I stopped writing. I still have the 'frame' where I know the big picture stuff. It's the in between parts that get me. Transition scenes, character moments, stuff like that that happen between the proverbial boss fights. Were it a dungeon crawler? I've designed all the boss encounters but there's no mooks/trash/minions populating the hallways between boss rooms.

This is why I stopped. Rather than force myself to keep putting down words that might not make sense or might be made up on the fly.

As for core character motivations? I think you misunderstood. This is a tertiary character and potential antagonist at best. And I know why she does what she does, it's just that it's not a clean image in my head, lots of frayed edges. I don't know how to portray it. My main party's goals are all pretty set in stone already.

Anyway, I know all about Chekhov's Guns and Occam's Razors. I'm not against cutting stuff that needs to be cut, but... Especially when considering the character in question? She's kind of a big deal to the overall arc of the story and the setup for the finale. I can't cut her or the other characters related to her.
