120 KB,
I recently ordered a guitar with a maple neck that will be arriving soon. I wanted to achieve a "roasted" effect without actually heat-curing the wood, which would require removing frets and everything.

If I wanted to achieve a similar effect by staining the neck, what I would I have to do as far as preparation beforehand? Would I need to do any sanding assuming that the neck doesn't have a glossy finish? And would a stain discolor mother of pear inlays?

Staining the neck would require removing the frets and would discolor the inlays. You're SOL. There's a reason people who know what they're doing stain/burn the neck BEFORE putting this shit into it.
>>
>>1007898
not to mention it will come with a sealed finish already
>>
>>1007621
If you must do this (and I would strongly urge you to not do this) then I suggest you buy a beater guitar to practice on first, or just buy a cheap maple neck from Ebay and ruin that before you move onto killing the resale value of your new guitar.

I can't go without mentioning once more what a terrible idea I think this is and what an ass you will feel after you destroy your new guitar.

How to check what is taking electricity in my house?

Last months electricity bill showed that I used 1300 kWh in my apartment.

I have a fridge that is medium sized, a small boiler that takes 1.5kW and also a computer and electric oven.

If I calculate say my boiler's usage, I would guess that it probably works 6 hours a day in the worst case scenario. That would be 9kWh per day and 270 per month. The fridge is a bit old and has no energy markings on it expect that it is "class A". But I imagine it should take less than the boiler.

Are you sure no one is stealing your electricity?
Take a look around, I've seen this happening before.
>>
>>1007494
Will look again over all the cables but so far it does not seem like that. But are there devices in existence that I could use to prove how much I use my self actually? Like putting some device in middle of boiler and socket to see how much it takes.

In a fit of edgelord rebellion against my divorcing parents I took a pair of scissors and inscribed the word "FUCK" on the wall, and now that I've come to my senses, I need to know how to fix the wall before they find out.

Go to a big box store, get some fast dry spackling compound and a plastic drywall knife. Scrape the spackle over the indents, let dry, paint. Could be done in an hour, probably two.

Carve "fuck" repeatedly across all walls and when they seem upset just say that's just the pattern of the wallpaper and it has always been that way. Also hang two nooses in their closet so they know that they've been successful parents.

What's the cheapest/most efficient way to distill water? I don't really want to go out and buy a distillation flask or professional condensor, what can I rig up instead?

Reason: city water is shit, kinda like that Michigan scandal, want to make it drinkable water.

Is the saran wrap covering both the glass and bowl? And the sun would give enough heat? Would it be worth it to line the bowl with something reflective like tin foil/find a bowl that's reflective inside?

Sup /diy/.

Does anyone have any experience with eink display drivers? Can you run them from USB, VGA or HDMI? I want to make a secondary reading display for my laptop.

http://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bns-solutions/e-ink-quick-start-kit?WT.z_Tab_Cat=New%2520Products

Can you plug any display matrix in this controller?

Prob more what you need - at $2k for the 13.3" Dev Kit linked, or 5k for a 32", slightly more expensive than the $70 for your original. But $70 is not cheap if it dont work either, it looks like a 4 y.o. limited segment controller only - doubt will do what you want.

Someone who knows this stuff maybe have better idea tho, I dont.
>>
>>1006457
Thanks.

Could you maybe wire up the board directly to the VGA pins and drive it from a laptop with a software solution?
>>
>>1006457
Presumably the cost is in the embedded board + support + software license.
$2000 or $5000 for a display, even if it were 80% of the cost, would be excessive and pretty much guarantee that no one will ever do a volume order.

What am I doing wrong?

This tool keeps kicking my ass despite practice and watching tons of youtube tutorials. Thanks to all the catches I got I fear putting the tool to the wood.

Note the height on the tool rest in the videos your watching for learning. It may be your issue.

I've experimented with the tool rest incessantly. I really think I'm too peabrained to learn how to use the skew chisel without hands-on training.

All the other lathe tools I handle just fine though.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I recently bought a loft with high ceilings and a sloping roof. There is a sprinkler system attached to the roof with a central spine at the highest elevation and three 'legs' that extend both sides of the slope. Along each 'leg' there are three power outlets controlled by a switch panel. By neighbors hang lights and I was looking to do the same.

I was able to hang pendants at the lowest elevation (14.5') but cannot hang anything higher due to height. I was looking to hang string lights along the central...

2 MB,
I just moved into a new apartment and there's this black stuff on the walls.

Looks like there was a fire here or something.

It's everywhere.
I tried to clean it with soap and water, it barely did anything.

Then I tried mr clean magic eraser and it scrubbed the paint right of the wall.

What do I use to get this shit off?

Thanks.

Hey /diy/ i have a garden but since i live in southern California i need to conserve water and I end up loosing a lot of water to evaporation. I was thinking of setting up a pergola with wide spaced rafters over the garden to reduce sun exposure allowing the soil to retain more water. Can anyone attest to how well this would work and how it would affect the more sun hungry plants such as my citrus?

31 KB,
So I am about to build a router fence but I don't understand it completely. Can someone please tell me what is the purpose of the slots that pic related it telling me to cut into the face and the sub face?
I understand the slot on the side of the base is to attach clamps, but I don't see the point of the other slots so I am guessing I don't completely understand the power of the router fence.

Thanks.

>>1007741
So you can slide the face along the sub face thus being able to make it longer or shorter ?
>>
>>1007741
The face boards can move left and right to compensate for the size of router bits. You dont want a large gap between your face and your bit
>>
Ahh I got it. Thanks.

This place I'm looking at has these odd jacks next to every since outlet. I think they're for phone lines. Should I replace the whole gang or just clean it up and leave it? I'd have to patch a new drywall at every box.. The place was built in the early 70s and it's interesting then you could literally plug your phone in anywhere in the house.
