Ok, I'm fairly new to street fighter, but can someone explain why the game lies to players about required motions?
Like what the fuck? I found I can cancel mikas st. HP into critical art by doing st. HP and then two backslash looking motions. thats not what the motions says. it says two quarter circles back, but that motion rarely works
other example, an srk motion can be done by rolling the stick from bottom right to back left and back again. thats not a z motion
final example, zangiefs spd motion. you do not have to do a full circle, why does the game perpetuate that lie. going from forward or back to the opposite upwards diagonal will also work
also, the game never tells the player about the existence of negative edge, so you often don't even need to hit a button twice in a combo, just hold it down and let go after doing a special motion
Having negative edge with SFV's buffers is a bitch. So many times do I try to OS with cancellable normals only to have the special come out even on whiff.

Honestly, there are a lot more important things that SFV doesn't tell its players. It doesn't teach how to do specials at all, V-Reversals, knockdown recoveries or even dashes. SFV's tutorial is a joke.
How long do you typically give a game to impress you before dropping it?
Depends on genre and design choices. If it's aesthetically pleasing or it has good music, then about an hour. Usually RPGs get that treatment. Other wise, first few levels at most. If I'm not into it by level 3, I usually stop.
A game doesn't really have to impress me, it just has to distract me from the emptiness in my soul.
I'll play games I know aren't great for hundreds of hours.

OP, never stop making villagers until you have AT LEAST 50% of your population occupied by villagers. Oh and remember to have around 5 town centres by imperial age. Remember to constantly harass your enemy with raid units in the early game.

My first SMT was DDS and it was a great starting point. From there, I went to Nocturne, DDS2, and then Raidou. I would highly recommend all the PS2 SMTs as well as Strange Journey and then PQ after you've played both P3 and P4.
