I don't get it though.
Why did people in the past wear armor if the swords still kept doing horrible shit to the wearer? Wear armor, move clunkier than the terminator and then get stabbed with no problem by some dickfaced opponent knight
Then bullets appeared and people finally realized how horribly obsolete armors really are against weapons, and gave up on using them.

Because it's light, easy and comfortable to wear for long durations of time, and it provides respectable degree of vision and doesn't hinder breathing too much (in relation to (great)bascinets, armets and other contemporary helmet designs).
