We use ASL for the evil party members. It's been going great though there is always a chance that the lazy stupid "good" party members might eventually pick some up.

You mean two as in 'one game master, one player"? If so, afaik yes, you can, although it's a little below optimal. There are even some adventures made for 1v1. It can sure work out, it's just systematized make-belive, keep that in mind.

I failed to hit a chicken that was at my feet and ended up chopping off one of my toes.
So that was pretty fun. Of course if I lose another toe I'll be taking a dex penalty, so that's not fun.

Why would you be taking Dex Penalties for losing toes?
Maybe if it was only for running/acrobatic type stuff and even then after some downtime the GM should let you remove some of those penalties by learning to adjust to your new feet properly.

Because you lose quite a bit of balance when you lose a few of your toes.
It's really only for losing some AC since I literally don't have any skills that use Dex that I put points into.

I like the mini-Codexes with custom options thrown in to add flavor and/or utility to certain teams.
Unfortunately, they're under a kind of rebuild at the moment. Original site owner and curator kind of fell off the grid, and eventually said he's not going to keep it up anymore. Another group picked it up and is currently bringing it fully forward into 7e, where some were still stuck in 5e. New group seems a little more open to some new ideas, like incorporating Forgeworld more actively into the mini-Codexes in specific cases, and smoothing over some problems in certain codexes like BA having WS/BS3 scouts while vanilla and DA SM scouts have WS/BS4.

That said, it is better than baseline 40k, but that isn't a stunning accomplishment.

“Finally!” Renault huffs. She charges straight for the kill, while the ground mage shoulders her rocket launcher and fires. The resulting explosion and cloud of dust prevents you from seeing who came out on top for the moment.
Not that you have the time to spare – switching screens, you judge the new aerial mage’s speed, the one trying to intercept Ophelia, and find it wanting.
“Ophelia. Keep heading straight for the freighter; the mage will get only one pass at you. Make it through and she won’t be able to catch up with you again and you’ll have a clear shot the rest of the way.”
“Acknowledged.”
The two mages close the distance between one another like a pair of knights in an ancient joust. Both with polearm Devices, it comes down to bravery and skill, to not flinch, to strike true, to defend against her counterpart’s blow, to pierce through to victory.
Out of the corner of your eye you notice – “Maserati! What’re you doing sitting there, get your lizard on the move already!”
There’s another explosion and Renault is blasted backwards and into a building, leaving a magical-girl-shaped hole in the wall. To her credit, she gets up swinging, taking out the rest of the wall as she comes out drill-first.
