Why do so many mages attempt to become liches instead of vampires? Both can cast spells and live forever. Yes, okay, liches are better in every way that matters, but they're harder to become and if you fail your soul is thrown into the Abyss or whatever.
Dying almost instantly in the sun is a pretty big drawback

Answered your own question there. Also vampires are riddled with weaknesses no self respecting thaumaturge would inflict on themself.

The most common method of becoming a vampire requires one to be at risk of being in thrall to the vampire who turned you.
Obviously, a mage that powerful would put contingencies in place, but it's a hell of a liability.

So, astral perception: I get the living stuff = aura, nonliving/cybered=hazy, in my head it looks a bit like Predator thermal vision but trippier. Also, I get that mundane stuff in astral takes a -2 DP, but is there mundane info I could glean in astral from the physical world?
Eg if I were in an office projecting, could I read an email on paper or a trid screen, or make out the model of a commlink on a table?
Do you have a setting or entire world in mind for your next campaign that you want advice on? Is it too unrealistic? Cliche? Doesn't explain certain magical powers?

Permanent powers or temporary?
It'd make more sense if you only have the powers as long as the magical creature/plants is in your system. Then part of the fun is timing it so that you have the powers last long enough for whatever purpose you need them for.
Then magic powers are rationed into multiple meals and are finite.

Nah, If magical energy is being gained from breaking down the creature in your body, it makes just as much sense that you'd retain the energy as long as no other biological process is expending it.

Because while John Dies at the End is one of my favorite novels, the film adaptation was terrible and David Wong is an SJW shitbag in real life. But I mean, it is a cool concept.It is an interesting concept for a villain though. It's basically a three hundred foot tall supercomputer made of meat. It's trying to take over our reality by capturing people and replacing them with doppelganger-esque replicas, most of whom don't know that they're not the original.
