>a fungus Yeah, that's not easy to kill. Fungi don't have organs. The only purpose that weapons would have would be to cut a path. This thing can only be killed with fire or poison. The amount of fire required would be extraordinary. Like, "affecting the weather of the neighboring countries for months" extraordinary. And the poison? The necessary amount of that is even more unrealistic.

A goal for the party to be able to penetrate this fungal fortress is to find a minor macguffin that will mask their presence from its senses; iunno, maybe pods from a closely related species. To fight it, maybe some sort of slug, maybe an insect colony. Hell, you could even use another fungus!
What kind of questions do you guys ask to flesh out your characters? I'm quickly realizing that I didn't spend nearly enough time working on the personality of my character, instead, I had a basic idea and just went to town on a character sheet.

Asking yourself questions to fill out certain blanks in your PC's character just means you lack the routine to fill out the relevant blanks without the extra prompt.

I've tried to recreate certain characters within game systems, but it was mostly for the act of creating them and seeing how well I could simulate their abilities. I never intended to actually play them.
Changeling the lost character ripped from dresden files, shadowrun character straight out of firefly. As dm I once based all my npcs on comic book characters. Slaughter the orcs, every last one of them. Every orcish man, woman and child will be put to the sword. Why? Because no loving father could marry his son off to such a hideous monster.
If it was a game where fox people were a valid PC race both in flavour and rules terms, yes.
If the former were true and the latter not, I would help.them find a "counts as" race to reskin.
If it didn't fit the story or the group dynamic, I would not. A mythology or fantasy or soft SF game is more likely to have such a character fit than a modern day military one, or a 40k game.
Always make sure as a DM your players are clear on the nature of your game and encourage everyone to make characters together with you present to answer questions.
If they had a good reason for it, sure. My worlds usually have 3-5 base playable races, but I can always work in special snowflakes. But I find most players who pick edgy races only want them because they're edgy, which is a bad roleplaying mindset.
