I have a legal question for you /tg/, how close can you get to another game's basic system without infringing on copyright? for example i have a d20 based system for an RPG which plays similarly to Infinity (the wargame)'s "roll-under-or-on-stat+situational-modifiers" system. i love it, it's great for what i want to do. but i don't want to get sued for making something which, at it's core, is similar. can ya help a guy out?pic unrelated. unless you consider shovel knight derivative. which it is but in a good way.

BtB is a webseries about Pathfinder players, showing their real lives as well as their IC-adventures.
Aimed to be realistic on the RL part.
‘Beyond the Barrier’ follows the daily lives of a group of players of Pathfinder. Pathfinder is a roleplaying game not unlike Dungeons & Dragons which is played with pen and paper while seated at a table. It is played by millions of people around the world.
Besides showing how our main characters cope with what is going on in their daily lives, ‘Beyond the Barrier’ will show the adventures our characters experience in their games as well. The viewer gets a good look on how the game happens in the imagination of the players. The game is set in a medieval themed world, the scenes for which were shot in The Netherlands.
Last but not least, ‘Beyond the Barrier’ shows the influence a game like Pathfinder can have on the daily lives of the protagonists and vice versa; and what kind of influence their real life struggles have in the choices they make while playing.
With ‘Beyond the Barrier’ we aim to give a realistic look into the lives of a group of people playing their game with a lot of passion. We want to break wrong stereotypes and show why this kind of games has been popular for over 40 years.

What are your guys opinion on DMPCs?
"DMPC" is a term for something inherently negative. A good GM makes charismatic and powerful antagonists that stand appropriately against the PCs; and allied NPCs that the audience (which is actually the PCs) can connect to. A DMPC is a character that constantly steals the PCs' share of focus. It basically exists as a way for the DM to say, "Hey look at this awesome character I made," and get a kind of reflected glow of weird false pride. They are, in every important sense, a Mary Sue, representing a very basic kind of mistake people make in writing...

They're bad. Very bad. Honestly one of the worst habits that some DMs have.
The issue is that they essentially steal the spotlight and relegate the PCs (who are meant to be the protagonists) to support roles or muscle at best. Essentially the DM is just playing out their own power fantasy, showing off how 'awesome' their character is, even though that character is only powerful is because the person playing them is also in complete control of the rules.
