You are River la Croix, ex-mercenary, novice necromancer, and you have a voice in your head. He's supposed to be there, but it would be nice if he'd shut up while Brianna is talking.
>>44241508
<You should be studying and training, not out in the field> Robert grumbles into your mind.
<Would you /shut up/ while I'm being given orders?> you plead. <This is important!>
The ghost lapses into silence as Brianna continues. " - This is recon only. Use your best judgement but two people aren't going to take on an entire town's worth of forces, no matter how sexy your new weapons are."
<Damn sexy> Robert comments, at the same time that Amy goes, "Yes ma'am."
<Robert, please, I know you want to proceed with my training but this is important.>
<I know. I just don't like you running about half-cocked like this.>
<I /am/ a warrior, you crazy ghost.>
<With a large hole in your armor.>
You look down and blanch. There /is/ a hole in your armor, where the spear got you. Amy is double-checking her equipment, which is what you ought to be doing, but it would be really bad if you got killed - again - in the same spot. Then again, these people have already been so good to you...

Hm, might fit in (Goblins has a way to cheat in fattie goblins with Lackey if I remember right), he just has to compete with Goblin deck's other 5 cmc finisher, Siege-Gang Commander. I don't think it stacks up favorably against that, as Siege-Gang lets you burn down your whole team for lethal whereas this is probably going to grab... what, a lightning bolt?

Basically what the title says: post stuff about RPGs that makes you cringe.
Example:
> whenever a system refers to itself as an "engine."
Have seen both Apocalypse World and Savage Worlds described like this and I cringed hard when I read it. The attempt to be "different" turned me off of both systems til I actuallly tried them and found out they were pretty decent. Still consider the use of "engine" instead of "system" to be cringeworthy as fuck.
What about you, /tg/?
Mechanical differences between male and female characters.
It's not even an SJW thing, I just don't want even more reasons for the grognards my GM allows in his group to play female characters EVERY FUCKING GAME. If there are any mechanical differences between genders, even if females are worse, they'll come up with some reason why their character build NEEDS to be female because they're all a bunch of Magical-Realming faggots.Someday I'll find a decent online group.

Not with your attitude you won't. Or at least you won't keep it. You'll just meltdown over the most petty crap and ignore any fun going on, if this thread is any indication.

Not a fan of the term "engine" either but you have to admit Powered by the Apocalypse Engine sounds cool

How does magic work in your setting, /tg/? Can anyone do it or just the special people?
Personally, I've always preferred sorcerors to wizards. I think the implication with Wizards is that basically anyone can learn magic if they just learn it - so magic isn't actually that magical or mysterious. Sorcerors, on the other hand, can "just do it" but don't necessarily understand the hows or why's about it.
So, for games in my setting you can't be a pure Wizard; you have to start Sorceror and then multiclass. The idea is that pure Sorceror works mostly on their gut and doing the magic THEY feel most strongly about whereas a Wizard is someone who has studied academic and technical principles to shape their spells. The analogy I use is that Wizard goes to art school and learns someone else's while the Sorceror just fucking paints until they find their own style.
How does that line up with what you think magic should/could be like? Why am I inevitably a dick-smoking cockshit for having my setting the way I do?
Anyone can do it, but hardly anyone has the patience and introspection it requires.
Which is why those who do are invariably obsessed with it.
>>44238036
Still, that implies a factory process could work where you just set up some schools and churn out (shitty) Wizards, right? Like, sure not many people have it in them to become ARCANE MASTERS but like, level 1 Wizard? At some point as baseline education and literacy levels go up, there's got to come a point where you can pretty much go to Wizard School for five years and come out a level 1 Wizard. At which point, you've got a mega-saturated Wizard market because who wouldn't want that.

Magic and life-force are semi-finite self-replenishing resources. Two mages cannot coexist in the same space for extended amounts of time because they'd use up the mana at an accelerated rate. Druids and the like have an easier time with it because they use less power so to speak and it regenerates faster. Necromancers are really bad because raising the dead uses really excessive amounts of life essence, and drains it from the surrounding area. You can tell when a Necromancer is about because plants shrivel and people/animals start getting sickly looking.
So I'm working out the kinks of a not!Africa setting and magic is giving me writer's block.
I decided that while normal humans can do magic they require a fetish to do so. Now I'm just pondering how you convince or compel a lesser god to live inside of a small idol, bag, animal bone, sword, bundle of feathers, etc.
I mean it's simple enough for evil spirits.
>"Grr rawr! If you want my power then smear deflowered baby blood on my boulder"
>"Bring me the bitter tears of 100 orphan slaves!"
Etc. But what would a largely neutral to benevolent spirit want or need?
People can let themselves become possessed by ancestor spirits and pull off supernatural feats. The reason is obvious: if grandpa's ghost can help you breathe fire all over a bunch of enemies he will.
Another concern is balance. should PCs be able to walk around with the ocean spirit herself as a fetish while others have some shitty tree spirit?
>>44237752
Some tribes believed that dance and celebration were innately spiritual acts, likely attributing what we know as positive psychology to magic. Festivals were specifically held to lend the power of the tribes people to the local shaman so that he might perform magic for the community's benefit.
Also there are beliefs in small tribes in the sub sahara that believe hyenas are in fact beast man hybrids, like werewolves, and that their bestial form is derived from magic and that rather than a curse they are in effect wizards. They also believe blacksmiths are wizards. So in effect they believe blacksmiths are wizards are werehyenas all interchangably. Also there are superstitions of a whole town populated by hyenamen in disguise. So a town of wizards. So a town of blacksmiths.
>>44238589
Some bantu tribes believed that shapeshifting monsters like werehyenas inherently have the soul of the creature they shift into.
And that eventually their natural compulsions come out so one day they begin to eat people,
Many africans distinguished between ordinary predators and the really smart ones. Very clever maneaters were considered shapeshifting spirits with the intelligence of men.
One tribe in Tananzia claimed that a handsome youth who was not of their village came to court a young girl. He seduced her and took her to the bush to make love, then came horrible screaming and silence. The villagers later found her mutilated corpse that night up in a tree hanging by her intestines and bone. They set up many traps which were evaded, almost like the predator was mocking them. Multiple hunters went into the bush to confront the creature and were devoured. So they all consulted the village witch doctor who cast a spell on an arrow. Later on a hunter noticed a leopard stalking him from the trees, he turned and shot it in the shoulder with the magical arrow. The leopard screamed like a human and fled. Later that day the mysterious youth came into the village with an arrow wound in the shoulder claiming to have been attacked. The villagers slew him and burned his corpse far away in the bush so he couldn't come back as one of the undead.
Many west african tribes considered blacksmith s to have powers because they spent their time alone at a hot forge taking raw nature and turning it into something useful for humans. The Yoruba have a story about a mortal blacksmith who saved a goddess from the wrath of the thunder god in a great battle. The epic of Sundiata is a conflict between a freeman and a blacksmith who became too big for his britches.
You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.
Last Thread: You are the mercenary spellblade Saul Waise, in command of a mercenary company that is currently seizing a large amount of territory in the hopes of forming an empire. You’re currently under siege by what appears to be a rogue force from a neighbouring kingdom.

Please quote the post you are voting for or rolling against. Note there are hard-to-replace points that can be used to offset failures in rolls. Additional dice mechanics will be given a GDocs later.

If you wanted to get at the mages as quickly and easily as possible, that meant making a beeline for them while avoiding the heavy knights. You’d do what damage you could on the way in, but getting out would mostly be a matter of Malaine and his knights flying everybody out. The last thing you needed was to get boxed in.
With the moon scarcely a day short of full it would be hard to sneak up on the watch, so you decided to do this the fashionable way. Your archers fell the guards where they stand and then the onslaught begins. Fire ripples through the camp as you lead the charge, screams and shouts echoing from around you. Magical bolts ripple around you and you respond with magical lances with a wave of your hand at times. There are a series of tents trying to block your path forward, and you remember they had fences behind them too to try to funnel you away from the centre.
You spot a half-dozen flying mage knights swoop overhead and then a thunderous crack greets your ears. Dirt, gore, splinters and the blazing remains of the tent canvas ahead of you are flung into the air. Your ears ring at the closeness of the explosion but at the very least you have a way forward. Enemy mage-knights try to rally on the other side, caught unaware by the sudden explosions. You won’t have any of it and charge them head-on, your own mage-knights joining you with magically enhanced shouts.

Shit, nightwalkers. I'm not sure how, but they have to have nightwalkers that they're planning to use tomorrow night.
how does your game go
Playing epic level Pathfinder as a Barbarian. That thing is fucked unless it can block 1100 damage per round with a hella magic huge sized greatsword.
WW1/interwar (intentional anachronistic technology) era magitech of a shitload of countries just found a target that isn't each other.
Just call it a villain like a sensible person.
Can we have a "worst /tg/ experience" thread? Not necessarily caused by That Guy, just situations where you had an awful time altogether

Help /tg/, I am toying with the idea for a setting.
Could a tidally locked world support life on the sun side (not just the twilight region) if it was far enough away from its star?

Sup /tg/. I'm starting a 2500 points Sons of Horus force after Christmas, and I'm just wondering how you lot protect and transport your armies, other than buying the GW carrying cases. I've seen people using big ass toolboxes full of foam, but I'm not sure how good of an idea that is. Thoughts?
So it's not quite what you asked for, but I have one of those GW carrying cases, and they're actually really nice.

Best case for the money. Unless you're using a lot of bigger models.

Time to slay some trolls edition
Hello everyone and welcome to ShitterNormie's Machine Civ part 4!
>What's happening in the civ Shitter?
Excellent question anon! We are the head AI of a group of drones and multi-purpose machines. Remember anon...if the main AI is destroyed the civ is lost!
>Where are we Shitter?
We are located in the side of a volcano. Our base (which can be given a new name) was built by our old masters: The gnomes. They're dead now because of orcs. But here we are! We are a large super computer that is position in the center of the main room of the volcano-side base. So far the current rooms we have are 1 door leading to the outside world, 1 drone building facility, 1 machine building facility, 1 steel mine, 1 generator room, 1 Machine of Burden building facility, and 1 locked room.
>Did anything happen last time?
Why yes anon a lot happened!
We managed to upgrade two of our units into an advanced versions (Advanced grabber drones and inferno drones), we unlocked a new type of unit: Machines of burden, our machines were equipped with flamethrowers, we saved a little gnoll girl named Spot from a troll and later found out that she was the gnoll Chris's daughter! Currently we are attempting to better our relations with the gnolls by helping them clear out the main troll cave. What we know about the cave is that the cave slopes downwards from the outside, there are 30 regular trolls, and there is one alpha troll who's skin is as tough as stone. Oh and #6 learned how to sing rock and power ballads. As we approach the troll cave we see the gnoll forces: 50 gnoll warriors (standard sword and shield) and 30 gnoll archers. They say that they were sent to assist you in the attack and they will follow any orders that aren't suicide. How are we going to deploy our troops? What robots did you bring to the fight? Anything extra you want to do while we are here?
>How do I get started!?!?!?
Just suggest two actions at the end of the IMMEDIATE CHECKUP. All choices' success will be determined by a 1d20 roll that I will do on my desk and tell you guys. (Rolled 15,2)
Intro was too long so that last part will be squeezed into the update post
IMMEDIATE CHECKUP ENGAGED
>Power supply: bretty gud
>Drones:19 advanced grabber drones, 9 gunner drones, 3 maintenance drones, 1 eye drone, 1 #6, 15 inferno drones
>Machines of Burden: 2 regular Machines of Burden
> Humanoid Machines: 4 multi-purpose machines (these can be changed with upgrades and research)
>Turrets: 1 Heavy Machine Gun Turret
>Special characters: Drone #6
>Moral: Ready to fight (#6 rocking the can can)
>Allies: Gnolls (suspicious)
>Building facilities: 1 steel mine, 1 machine builder, 1 drone builder, 1 generator room (barely average)
>Memory files: Pretty good (this can be fixed with dedicated research which will unlock lore and blueprints)
>Locations unlocked: Home base (well hidden), Outside world, Village, Troll lair
>Locations that we have heard about: The elves to the eastern forest, The Orcs to the northern plains, The Crabmen to the south that apparently live in some fortified, seaside fortress
>Inventory: 3 spears, 2 shields, 40 steel, 5 copper
What would you like to accomplish now (2 actions)?
>Discussion Point: Attack Plan
What are the merits of utilizing rolling large logs down into the cave, perhaps flaming, to delay troll movement, then utilize Inferno Drones to increase the oil side of their mixture to create a stream of flaming oil to cover the cave floor.
>BURN THEM ALL.
Ahem... use the gunners as suppresive fire to try and keep the trolls in place or force em back if they get too close while the inferno drones stand at the top of the hill and fire down into them, lead by the machines armed with flamethrowers. The other machines should make use of the spears we got to also hold back any that get too close/maybe take down the alpha with them.
Not sure what to ask the gnolls to do but stay back and fire arrows.
>setting has orcs, trolls, goblins, hobgoblins, half-orcs, ogres, imps, gargoyles, bogeymen, demons, ghouls, urgals, goblinoids, demihumans, gremlins, bugbears, and monstermen
Why is this allowed?
