Become The Vampire 29
It's been a weird afternoon so far. The school day was pretty normal, for the most part, but in the last hour you've attempted rune magic for the first time, almost blown yourself up, created a homunculus that calls you “daddy” and exposed Meliora's insecurities about how alive she really is. Plus you still need to talk to Jennifer about her new job, talk to Angie about her boss and her meeting at some point, and see if Sammy and Andrea are alright after the party last night. Well, you don't have to, but you kinda want to. You give Meliora a squeeze and release her.
“So, what happens now?”
Meliora runs her eyes.
“Well, my dad isn't going to be happy that one of the defense droids is now flesh and blood... I was hoping to get her upgraded and online before he noticed she was being 'repaired', but now he's going to work it out for sure. And since the math teacher is gone, he won't be able to get a fresh core crafted safely, so he's going to be even more upset.”
You nod slowly as Athena moves to your side and latches onto you. Meliora rolls her eyes.
“You'll need to be careful. We should head back to our room and work this out from there.”

Same system as Become The Dragon Quest. If you don't know what that is, it's best of three d20 rolls. I name a stat that sums up what you're trying to do, and if I don't name a relevant skill, you try to fill in the blank based on what you're trying to accomplish. “Break open the door” might be Strength based, but if you've been playing baseball after school and there's a lead pipe nearby, you could apply your Baseball skill to the roll. A 20 on the die is a crit threat, and if either of the other two rolls is 20 or higher after mods, it's a critical. A crit fail is when you have two or more 1s. So far this system has worked out well enough. We'll get into combat rules as needed, but in basic terms you have wounds, not HP, and the worse the wounds, the more penalties you accrue while doing other things.
Most Important Rule:
Have fun.

It has plenty of space for your own fluff.
You need to stop thinking of continent wide events, or maybe start reading up about the setting
There's definitely less room now that it ended.

"Like fucking hell it's between you and Lora," you snap, your voice raising. "No offense meant to her but I'm pretty fucking sure Lora couldn't give a shit about you at swordpoint."
"She's right," Lora drawls.
"You stay out of this," you snap at the angel, before whirling on your Aunt's specter once more. "You have the gall to say you're not part of the family? Where the fuck do you get off?"
"You were /there/ when I gave up my name," Carol scoffs.
"I was there when you went off to mourn my mother," you whisper, harshly. "When you gave me this hat. I was there every year at your grave to mourn you. I'm still there every year, the day you die, to drink and cry and hate that you left me. I still treasure the things you taught me and the advice you gave me and all the time we had together." You can feel the hot, angry tears in your eyes, but you don't care. "You say you're not part of /my/ family? How fucking dare you."
"Brianna -"
"DON'T EVEN START!" you yell, at the top of your lungs. "YOU, OF ALL PEOPLE, TAKING THE COWARD'S WAY OUT? USING ME FOR IT?"
"Now you sound like your mother," Carol snaps, her own ire flashing.
"Good, someone ought to," you retort, and the ghost flinches away, as if struck. "...Don't you think she misses you?"
"Is that future even possible for me?" Carol whispers.

Man this thread is dead. So they haven't shown the cover of the No Quarter that releases next week. Any theories? Think there's something big they're going to announce?
>>44764923
Probably not. There's not much content on the horizon until lock and load officially hits.
I have to drop this game anyway, might as well.

Kind of makes me wish I had a non-shitty camera. Might motivate me to get back on my Skorne painting spree.
Are there any good RPG involving Mecha?
>>44760459
The single best system for running a Mecha game was a re-skinned 4e. This is especially true given that the most common criticisms of the system are
>It's not D&D. It's more like a RPGified battletech with plot-shield.
To which you'd reply
>Yeah... we're running a mecha game, not D&D, so that's perfect.
>>44760878
HahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaGURPS is a good bet to be honestahahahahah
There's ChromeStrike.
There's also Mutants & Masterminds 3e.
Who else here is going this weekend?
What are you hoping to get?
As a clerk of a LGS, not many people are interested on the oath prerelease. I should have by now many pre-inscribed players, but till today, noone is pre-inscribed in the 2heads.
>>44754177
Yeah, my LGS also seem to have a problem with getting people excited about it. They still have several ticklets left. Normally they're all sold out at least a week before the event.
>>44753533
I'm hoping to have fun, unfortunately the only people who show up are people who can't make limited decks, kids and 3 people at "my level" but they will probably participate somewhere else. It's usually pretty fun but I wouldn't mind a that new mythic sphinx...

Predictably, your mood went straight to hell after the phone call.
After trading threats and dire promises with a dangerous man, your emotions are naturally keyed up for a fight - but today, there's only more paperwork. Hamp liberates a book from your shelf and is happily tearing through it at impressive pace as you catch up on the mundane, but vital matters that go into running even a small military force - even one with such streamlined supply requirements as yours. There's an official dietitian report on your shipgirls; complete with calorie counts - the most notable addition is that Hornet has taken to adding sliced pickles to her hamburgers. Damage reports are better - a report from Wainwright has landed in your in-box detailing Hornet's surprisingly rapid recovery. There's a PS on the bottom...
“Hamp?”
He looks up at you. “Ayo, skip.”
“Have you been to see the doctor?”
“Sawbones? What for?”
“You kind of got the shit shot out of you in that scrap, didn't you?”
“So? Didn't have my bow blown off or anything.”
You squint at him. “But... doesn't it hurt?”
He looks politely thoughtful for a second. “For a while? I guess?” He shrugs and turns the next page in his book.
“Well, when you get a chance visit the hospital and let the doctor have a look at you.”
“I'm fine.”
“I know. He needs help with a theory,” you half-lie.
“Whazzat?”
“Seems to think American ship... people heal a mite faster.”
Hamp snorts. “No shit.”
The next e-mail is a quick briefing update on the state of sea control in general - and it catches your attention instantly. Icebergs have been spotted drifting much too far south, especially for this time of year, threatening to cause hazards in shipping lanes. Of more immediate importance is reports of intensified anti-convoy activity on the part of the abyssals - a pair of submarines were run off by a pair of Chinese destroyers escorting a grain convoy over the Sea of Japan, and the LCS-1 engaged a pair of surface raiders in an after-dark running gun battle for an hour before the abyssals were forced to disengage under smoke, minutes before P-8s from Hawaii could arrive.
You fire off an email to the intel division requesting more details on the submarine attack. Freedom's surface battle, just from the sitrep, sounded legendary - but the submarines are in your backyard and they worry you far more. You remember the SSN skippers reports after the Bonin islands - their protracted undersea duel with very canny subs.
Your inbox is finally clear, and you lean back with a sigh.
All things considered... you're not really sure what to do.

Yes, pure write-in this time. Quality can trump quantity, if its very very good.

You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.
Last Thread: You are the mercenary spellblade Saul Waise, in command of a mercenary company that is currently forming an empire and fighting off a vampire-controlled city-state. Last thread you began to march on Darlesia and met your dragon.

This was hardly the best situation to be dealing with the complexities and impacts of choosing a side in the war between the Magi League and the Royal Seraphi Kingdom. Unfortunately, with one of the League’s up-and-coming hero spellblades on the other side of the sending device and in the very city you wanted to conquer, that might be forced on you.
You rub the bridge of your nose as you digest Rayza’s last words. No vampires? That seemed completely contrary to the report you had just received.
You say as much, “What exactly is your basis for saying that there are no vampires here?”
“We searched,” Rayza answers, and the tartness in her voice makes you imagine her striking a pose as she says as much. Not that you have the slightest clue what she looks like.
“To be more exact, we searched the city while actively trying to detect signs of vampiric power,” another female voice says, slightly deeper in tone and with an accent that seems vaguely familiar.
“What Moonblade said, although we avoided the keep. Couldn’t sense any power in there but it’s almost certainly trapped,” Rayza finishes.
Glancing between Cormann and Gnome, you confirm that both of them are as sceptical of their claims as you are. It’s not as though they don’t have a reason to lie to you.
Wearing a thin smirk that the League spellblades can’t see, you say, “Given what I’ve just heard about the resistance, you’ll have to forgive this vampire hunter for confirming it himself.”
“I don’t think that is wise. This is League territory,” Rayza says, her voice cautioning.
“No, it’s not. It’s Taouran territory and that means it’s vampire season for all. I will take Darlesia and remove any traces of the vampires.”
>continued
>>44797306
There’s a long pause in which you stare at the sending device, as if daring Rayza to come back at you. Unless the League wanted to push against you and turn you into an enemy already, then you doubted there would be much opposition. Even if the spellblade was upset you didn’t roll over for her.
“I’ll relay that back to General Mercenie,” Rayza says. The playfulness in her voice from earlier is completely gone and she’s completely professional now, without any nicknames or insults. “I hope that you’re at least willing to work with us – the League has a lot to offer spellblades.”
With that, the League spellblades are gone and your scout finishes his report, without much to add. You look between Gnome and Cormann, the latter of which looks deep in thought. Ordering him to collect your officers and hold a strategy meeting, you make your way to the planning tent with Gnome by your side.
She doesn’t stay quiet for very long. “How exactly do you know Mercenie?” she asks you, her face expressionless even as a glint in her eye tells you that she’s very interested in your answer.
To be perfectly honest, you didn’t know her. At best you had seen and heard from a great distance once when you had been a part of her army, which numbered in the tens of thousands. You were just another spellblade in a mass of them. If Rayza had meant Mercenie when she said ‘Merce’ however, then that meant the famous League general knew you somehow. You wonder why Gnome is so interested? Your answer is…
>1. Honest. You don’t know Mercenie at all.
>2. Embellished and a little boastful to Gnome. You might not know Mercenie, but clearly you’re great enough to catch her eye.
>3. Completely made up. Pretend that you know her intimately, just to see how Gnome reacts.

These two (I know they're trilogies but I read them in Omnibus format so I consider them single books each) are tied for best, IMO.
But then, BL's best is several steps below any other fantasy or science fiction I've read, IMO. Dabnett and ADB are okay writers who take a really, really shallow but very cool setting and force it to approach the lowest bracket of good fantasy and science fiction.
I don't give a shit how many smug anime girls you post, here are some science fiction and fantasy authors I have read and consider good:
Tolkien
Pratchett
Frank Herbert (though only Dune, Dune Messiah, and half of Children of Dune)
Stephen Baxter
Robert J. Sawyer
Fritz Leiber
Lovecraft
Jules Verne
H.G. Wells
Neil Gaiman
Mike Mignola
Shitty, spotty, incomplete list, but you get what I mean.
