Scenario
Under the impression that the Yamato is in need of aid, the 4 Akizukis close to within 3000m of her and hail her. Yamato's only return to the hail is that she is now hostile and prepares to fire.

You use what you're issued until you finish field training at which point you comply with the department policy manual and use what you like. Trying to be different and upgrading your gear during probationary period without permission makes you a stupid boot that will eat at your training officer's patience.
