I've been halfheartedly curious about American gun laws. I realize and recognize that when it comes to regulations like from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, those change with the direction of the wind.
However, I'm curious where I would go to learn all that I can that's involved in the legal ownership and possession of guns, the local and state rules and laws and regulations of the guns, the federal laws regarding guns..
Are there any books you'd recommend...

That's like saying the AK-47 and the STG-44 are the same because they look a little bit alike. I'm saying you're wrong.
The Johnson is recoil operated, like a big Mac10. The AR10 is gas operated. They have little in common mechanically. The visual similarities are purely because when you are making a gun primarily out of steel/aluminum tubing, there are only so many shapes you can end up with.

vaguely /k/ and /fa/ related. i have recently learned there is a shooting club not very far away from my city. think country club, but centered around hunting, skeet/clay/trap. they have fox hunts, go fowling, turkey and pheasant, et c.
it is not cheap, at all. at the club you effective step back in time to the 1930's. cars, women, cigars, et c. one guy drove a stutz bearcat, and they have more than one Purdy gun available for "loan" to new club members.

Did Ruger discontinue the SR series? I've looked everywhere and cannot find any of them. I've asked several gun stores about ordering one and they said their distributors are out as well. I talked to one guy who told me that Ruger hasn't "officially" discontinued the SR series, but that they've essentially been discontinued because they aren't making them anymore and are trying to sell the Ruger American as a replacement.
I bought my SR40C less than two months ago, and there were several other SR series Rugers on the shelf beside it.

Depends where you live, Ruger SR-Series fell off the roster in California a long time ago.
I haven't really looked at these new in a long time, but I see them constantly on the used shelf.
