Does anyone know of a good technique or at least some tips on estimating distance/range (in general, not just on a shooting range) using eyes only? I'm a eurofag btw so only meter/kilometer units please.
Best way is to guess distances to objects you can check the distance to over and over. If you have a laser range finder, guess a distance and check it. This is the most efficient and effective way to hone your eyeballing range finding skill.
I'm decent at estimating distances, but only because I do it a lot at work.
I'd say to just practice a lot.

What does /k/ think of the SOCOM 16?
I'm looking into getting one for general use against any possible terror threat or civil unrest. The .308 is pretty much undisputed as a powerful caliber so lets talk rifles to fire it first.
As stated before, I like the SOCOM 16. It's a true and tested design in a nice sleek package. It's like the modern musket. However, it might not be quite on par with other battle rifles. Taking into account that it will only be fired as a semi-auto, is there a better rifle out there that comes just off the shelf?

I was thinking about all those people who homemake shotguns from plumbing tubing.
Considering that
1) the highest proof pressure for the average shotgun would be 14,000 psi,
2) a 12gauge shotgun roughly translates to roughly 3/4 inch in diameter
3) Burst pressure should be considered as the applicable pressure with regards to shooting shotguns shells out of plumbing pipes
