They're mike hoares Congo mercenaries. Most of them were ex-British army and Wehrmacht WW2 veterans, people who fired SMGs from the hip before assault rifles were a thing. When issued with F/A rifles upon arriving in the Congo, they presumably applied their past experience with automatic weapons to what they were given.

This is a pretty good book about the Special Forces team that supported Hamid Karzai during the initial invasion of Afghanistan. Includes an account of some very demoralizing friendly fire though.

I haven't read the other ones that chronicle actual experience in field (lions of kandahar, gentlemen bastards, the only thing worth dying for, etc.) but I'm sure those could give some more insight.
