Why make it a gender thing? She was someone used to operating within strict rules and regulations, so when she got saddled with a bunch of guys who make their own rules and effectively ignore the law that she has spend her whole career holding as a virtue, she couldn't handle it. Add to it that she was fed a bunch of bullshit about making a difference when she was actually just there so they could operate on US soil. It wouldn't have been any different if she were a male FBI agent AFAIC.

After repeated delays including a contract cancellation, the first four out of 20 Embraer/Sierra Nevada Corporation A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft slated for service in the Afghan Air Force (AAF) arrived on January 15 at Hamid Karzai International Airport, IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly reports.

The AAF is expecting an additional delivery of four more A-29 Super Tucano by the 2016 fighting season, with an additional four delivered in 2017. The remaining eight will be handed over to the AAF by the end of 2018.

“The A-29 light attack aircraft is a versatile aircraft that brings a number of critical capabilities to the AAF. These include close air support, armed escort, and armed overwatch,” according to NATO’s ‘Resolute Support’ Mission spokesperson, Colonel Michael T. Lawhorn.

The four aircraft will become operational within the next couple of days and will, in all likelihood, be deployed to support combat operations in the eastern province of Nangarhar and the southern province of Helmand, according to Afghanistan’s acting Defense Minister, Masoom Stanikzai.

The United States Air Force (USAF), responsible for the training of Afghan pilots, allocated $427 million for the A-29 Super Tucano planes under the USAF’s Light Air Support program. One hour of flying time usually only costs $1,000, a big cost advantage for the cash-strapped AAF.

The A29 Super Tucano is a turboprop aircraft specifically designed for counter-insurgency operations and can be equipped with a wide array of bombs (including precision guided munitions) and machine guns. According to Jane’s Defense Weekly:

>The A29 features two internally mounted .50 cal machine guns (one in each wing), and has five hardpoints under the wing and a fuselage that can carry up to 1,500 kg of additional weapons. These can include .50 cal or 20 mm gun pods, rocket pods, short-range air-air missiles of the AIM-9X class, and conventional or smart freefall bombs. The aircraft’s inboard stations, as well as its ventral one, are also ‘wet’-configured for underwing fuel tanks.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Defense, the four A-29 delivered on January 15 will be all capable of dropping laser-guided bombs.

Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer and its U.S. partner Sierra Nevada Corporation where initially awarded the contract to supply 20 A-29 light attack aircraft in 2011. However, the contract was cancelled in 2012 due to a dissatisfaction of USAF leadership “with the quality of the documentation supporting the award decision.” However, the contract was re-awarded to Embraer and Sierra Nevada Corporation in 2013.

“In hindsight, I wish we would’ve started that years ago,” the commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, General John F. Campbell said in front of the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee in March 2015, yet “we are where we are. (…) Quite frankly, we can’t get it out there quick enough for them.”

The first eight Afghan A-29 Tucano pilots graduated in December 2015 from flight school in the United States. Up to 30 Afghan pilots will be trained by the USAF over the next three years. The training program has been suffering from occasional desertion of AAF personnel. Most recently, two AAF members from a maintenance crew undergoing training at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia went missing in December 2015.

In the competitive bidding process for a $50 billion ($38.8 billion) contract to build Australia’s new submarine fleet in partnership with Australian industry, Germany appears to be losing over technical concerns, according to industry sources interviewed by Reuters.

“The German proposal is an enlarged version of a smaller existing submarine, and that technically is risky,” one source told Reuters. German defense contractor Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) is offering Australia a scaled-up version of its 2,000-ton diesel-electric Type 214 submarine, equipped with lithium-ion battery technology. As I reported previously, TKMS is offering the 4,000-ton HDW class 216, specifically designed to meet Australia’s needs.

In February 2015, the Australian government asked Germany, France, and Japan to bid for the country’s largest defense procurement program (the so-called SEA-1000 acquisition project)—a contract to build up to 12 new submarines for the Australian Royal Navy, replacing the six Collins-class submarines currently in service.

The requirements outlined in the bid including a 4,000-ton displacement, a range and endurance similar to the Collins-class submarines, sensor performance and stealth abilities better than the Collins, and a combat system and heavyweight torpedo developed jointly by the U.S. and Australia as the preferred combat system and armament, makes an off-the-shelf solution not an option.

All three contenders–TKMS, Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and French defense contractors DCNS –have agreed to build the submarines in Adelaide, the home base of the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC).

As The Diplomat reported previously, DCNS is offering a 4,000-ton version of the French Navy’s Barracuda-class nuclear powered attack submarine, dubbed the Shortfin Barracuda Block 1A.

Japan, with its brand new 4,000-ton Soryu-class stealth submarines outfitted with a new lithium-ion battery propulsion system, appears to still be the frontrunner, however, as I pointed out previously, the submarine may not be the best option for Australia:

>[O]n average Japanese subs are constructed to last for around 19 years, whereas the Australian governments expects at least a 30-year active service life span. The Japanese boats also have much less accommodation space than Collins-class submarines.

>Additionally, the much talked about air-independent propulsion (AIP) system is actually Swedish technology. However, the Australian government has so far not shown any interest in AIP, preferring a lithium-ion battery option, which will be built into the next batch of Soryu-class subs. Nevertheless, advanced lithium-ion batteries are one of Japan’s top military secrets and it seems unlikely that Tokyo has agreed to share this sensitive technology with Canberra despite media reports.

>The Japanese subs also allegedly have less range than the current Collins-class submarines in service. Furthermore, another concern is the integration of a U.S. combat system and weapons ( Mk 48 Mod 7 CBASS heavyweight torpedoes) into the Japanese hull.
>>
In fact, in November 2014, Australia’s Senate Economics Legislation References Committee, rejected the Japanese submarine as an option.

When asked about Germany losing the bid, TKMS Australia Director Jim Duncan told Reuters that “[t]he rumors could well be right. Who knows. My only advice, having spent many years in this environment is: believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see.” Like with most major defense deals, at the end, the decision will be political and only partially influenced by technical considerations.

>4000 tons

Why? Every other conventional sub is now displacing at 2000 tons

What does Australia need to do that weighs twice as much?

400,000?

Lets break those numbers down.
There are 31920 gun deaths a year in the USA (CDC, 2013)

There are 21,175 gun suicides a year in the USA (CDC, 2013

That leaves 10745 homicide, accidental, or defensive gun deaths in the USA.

Of those 10745, 8454 are homicides.

Of those 8454, 80% are gang related http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr61/nvsr61_06.pdf

Thats approx 6763 gang-related gun homicides.

That leaves the USA to have 1691 deaths from non-gang related homicides or accidental firearm use.

Factor in the 600 accidental gun deaths, thats 2291.

The US population sits around 321,000,000.

Your chances of dying this year from non-gang related homicide or accidental firearm use is 7.1x10^-6, or .00000716 percent.

The chances of you being struck by lightning this year is only half as likely from non-gang related homicide or accidental firearm use.

I think a lot of people forget that most gun deaths are suicides, and yet we don't really have a high suicide rate.

Lemme break down your breakdown...

You see, a major philosophy in American society, is the freedom to make your own decisions.

And forcing people to do something they don't want to do when it has no effect on you is a douche move.

As I told the missus afterwards, "I immediately regret offering to sell my gun to that guy." Fortunately, while I got his contact info, he never got mine. So at least he's not gonna chase me up about it any time soon.

This is coming from a guy who doesn't hunt, but I dont see the issue about not respecting the animals he kills. In Australia, practically every animal is trying to kill you, or wants to kills you. I don't see a problem with taking joy in killing stupid animals that would murder you and rape your dog while your wife and kids watch.
>>
>>28662357
The things that want to kill us are the goddamn snakes and spiders. Kangaroos can gore you, but they're typically pretty skittish creatures. Usually they only fight if cornered and wounded.

And most of the other things we hunt are foreign invasive species that other countries hunt anyway, like razorback hogs, deer, etc.

I'm getting sick of everything getting churned out these days being another striker fired polymer 9mm or the 7000th piston driven attempt at an AR/AK killer with a monolithic rail (failing to realize it's not going to dethrone the AR/AK if they market it at twice the cost of them)

Shit mang, just imagine what crazy designs will be made when they manage to make batteries that could support laser or gauss rifles, hell, even practical caseless ammo could lead to some cool shit.

I don't know if we'll see practical caseless ammo or personal railguns any time soon, but telescoping polymer cased ammo looks very promising. Maybe its benefits vs the M4 will make the military switch over to using it.

By the time the original M14 production run was no longer adequate, the SCAR existed.

Besides, the AR-10 was always, always, always a better rifle than the FAL.
