So /ic/ I'm bad at sculpting, but I want to improve. Here is my first attempt at sculpting a human head, no reference used.
I will use reference in the future - I did this in order to find out where I tend to make mistakes and where my understanding of the human face is lacking (everywhere unfortunately, duh.)

I was hoping to get some help from anyone gentle enough. Redlines, general advice, anything really.

I chose this board instead of /3/ because this is about art fundamentals.

Also - yes I ignored the skull, the ears and the forehead, but I admit I couldn't do much better even if I tried. (how is an ear shaped anyway?)

I will be really grateful to anyone willing to help. Thanks in adavnce and sorry for posting something bad.

Basically what I would like to know is what went especially wrong and what can I do about it, because I can't tell (If I could I would just make it better, but this is my current limit)
so I can pay special attention to those areas when studying and practicing

Hey, I'm a professional sculptor and it's great to see some fellow sculptors on /ic/.

I find the best way to approach sculpting is to think about every feature in terms of planes and shapes. I highly highly recommend you get Philippe Farauts instructional books series on sculpting. They are expensive but very much worth every penny.

https://philippefaraut.com/books.html

He explains sculpting the portrait starting from the very basics up to advanced form and also points out common errors new sculptors make.

Practice makes perfect so keep at it.

I keep hearing about getting a set of gray markers all the time, but what can you actually do with them? I havent seen almost any pictures that would make a good use of them.

Could you please post some marker examples / inspiration?

I don't have any saved but I see really cool stuff done with grey copic markers all the time.

I got some faber-castel pens that I can't really get the hang of though.

It's used in industrial design a lot. Or well it was, but it is being replaced by digital. Other people use it as a way to do quick tone for thumbnails or early sketches for illustrations. Alberto Mielgo comes to mind for this.

1. Resize image
2. Stop drawing in your notebook
3. Learn to draw
4. Fundamentals
5. Be over 18
6. Don't come back before you have completed all the steps above

But .... what's wrong with it?
>>
learn to draw a circle, maybe, lol. draw something that hasnt been drawn a million times by middle schoolers everywhere. also, invest in a sketchbook, no one wants too see those lines. learn to draw faces on people first. also dont use your fucking saliva to shade with a bic pen... kek

I haven't really seen these around. It can really help some people. Anyways, just post a picture and maybe some kind anon will kindly critique it.

Feel free to ignore if this topic's niche has already been taken/

In the comments section of this FZD video where feng shows before and after, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rI6q6bv7do
but I'll quote it for you or you can check the picture
Some guy named Peter Clark says that its your personality that matters and that Feng was being too harsh by pointing that shitty art, is in fact, shitty

apparently, Peter said that he has hired people with less skillz

From Peter Clark
"I'm a professional artist and I have to say.... I think you're being a bit harsh with your comments. Calling peoples work 'amateurish' and 'high-school art' is hardly a great way to motivate your viewers moving forward. As a Lead Artist in the games industry, I have seen many people with less ability get hired. I've employed people with less drawing/painting ability. It all depends on the job AND the person's 'fit' within the team. Hiring someone based solely in their portfolio is a mistake. I get that you're highlighting the difference before and after training at your school, but try to ease off on the negativity..... it comes across as arrogant and made me reluctant to watch the rest of the video."

I can't seem to find the guy's website or anything as there multiple Peter Clarks who happen to be artists but the fact that he hired shitty artists based on their personality

Draw your off-hand thread!

That's right - if you are right handed, draw your left hand and vice versa. Your left hand is always with you lying around there useless so draw it. You can also repeat the process for few days and post progression. This is the first one I did - not so good, but I know it's going to improve gradually.

This does improve both your still life perception and your hand drawing skills also!

The fist seems little small, maybe you have small hands or your could train your eye to catch measures and distances better. Try to really focus when you draw from still life, like shut everything out and just stare your hand and the paper back and forth. Maybe do these studies twice a day for couple weeks and see if you improve! This is one of the easiest exercises to do.

thanks for the advice! :3

Awhile back I made a post regarding oil paint and what kind of paint and what kind of books i should check out to learn how to oil paint. I believe anyone can br a great artist/painter if they actually out their determination and will into it and ultimately trial and error is a big thing when you are starting something new. I dropped out of junior college where i was studying art (Well i just stopped going cause i didn't have money and it was a drag) because they weren't really teaching me things that I didn't know rather things that already made sense to me. Anyway I did a painting for someone as a wedding gift and I've never done an oil painting but I decided this could be fun and a learning experience. (I was kind if drunk since I was at a bar when this happened). I had about 5 months to do it but I didn't start till the 3rd or so. This was my 4th attempt at a oil painting. I also have a couple photos of my first attempts.

Tldr trial and error is the best way to learn how to paint, well for me.

Not bad for a beginner. But your drawing suffers, his chin :( the painting is better than where his chin bleeds into his neck.
Here, you have value, simple in the face, and simpler in shirt and background, broad color. There isn't any complex color, which perhaps you will improve on later.
The hair looks too flat, it would be better with a composite dark (some blue in there).
The composition is satisfyingly traditional.

Sure, show your earlier attempts?
>>
>>2292561
It's okay. Looks like you can control the oils, but now it's a matter of making good decisions in the painting. Right now it looks like you just copied a photo, mistakes and all. Like the colours look like a photo (not in a good way), his teeth look like you cut it out of a magazine of a different person and pasted it in, his eyes look dead, the whole thing feels flat, the edgework is poor etc.

I would recommend picking a master portrait painter, finding a hi-res image of theirs, and doing a master copy. Do this often. Sargent, Velazquez or Van Dyck are all good choices, but you can pick someone else if you feel more of a connection to their work. It would be good for you to try painting from life too. If you can get a model or friend to sit and pose for a 3 hour portrait or something you will probably learn a lot.

I'm not good at sculpting anyway, and my painting skills are nonexistent (something I've been wanting to learn, though) so that is more or less out of the question.
Something related to art would be good, though.

I use 2 Parker propelling pencils (one with hb, one with 2b), an eraser, sharpie, a Pilot V5 pen and a Pilot drawing pen along with a small drawing pad.
>>
Three pencils, a rubber and a ruler.

And whatever paper I can get my hands on.
>>
These and a binder of printing paper are pretty much my go-to for the "not giving a fuck" drawings and the stuff I tend to have with me all the time.

For other standard stuff that I have a staedler 2mm lead holder and a pentel pocket brush pen. I want to invest in some copics but they cost a fucking arm and a leg.
