What if Sheev knew all along that Snoke (aka Plagueis) was possibly alive all this time?
Furthermore, in an EW interview:

Snoke had the gift of foresight. He saw what Sheev would do for the Sith in Snoke's perceived absence. Sheev was ultimately a pawn that was instrumental to Snoke’s rise in power.
Remember also that Star Wars is like poetry, it rhymes. In Episode 1, Qui-Gon says, "There's always a bigger fish." This is a theme that has not been explored yet but will be revealed in THE FORCE AWAKENS. The Force awakening essentially being Snoke who has set the piece of the Force in motion since he fell asleep and is now awake.

Dooku is without question the most confusing character in the franchise.
He doesn't show up for 2/3 of the movie he's the villain in, we never see him do anything that makes us dislike him, his plans are nonsense, and then he survives the film only to die in the first 15 minutes of its sequel.
Like, I can usually sort of understand what Lucas was gunning for with a lot of his other characters when viewed through his autistic lens, but Dooku is just beyond comprehension.

I know in the EU it's established all Dooku was doing half the time was following orders (the intentions of which were solely to rile shit up so that the Senate would start to freak out). Dooku isn't necessarily a bad guy, just a man disenchanted with what a shit-hole the Republic is and who decides to join a guy who says he's doing something about it.
