What's the scariest looking monster you've seen on TV/movie? The kind that kept you up all night?

I would really love to have sex with something like that.

Strangely enough, it was the first Paranormal Activity and Sinister. They were the last films I remember watching that scared me.

I don't know why, but the only films I find scary, for the most part, are paranormal centered flicks. Even something like Grave Encounters.

Which is weird, because IRL I don't get spooped by this shit at all.

Something I wish I could understand about myself.

That movie scared the ever living shit out of me when I was 10~. I barely remember anything about it, but it fucked up most of my nights that year.

I'll post one that was extremely creepy, from [REC], but I'd like to know if any of you can recognize this one I'll describe.

I haven't seen the movie she's in (only saw a webm of her), but she looks like a banshee, floating through the air at a house at night. The house has no lights turned on and the scene takes place inside of it. The camera is fixed at a certain angle and you can barely see the room, but there are flashes of light, probably from a storm. There's nothing in the room at first, then there's a flash of light and you see some "dress", then it goes dark again, then another flash of light that reveals the banshee-looking thing.

I asked the anon that posted it where it was from, but he didn't know it at the time and I ended up not saving the webm... Does anyone have a clue?

Exorcist 3 isn't bad man.

It's a bit of a mess, but it sets up some genuinely bizarre and terrifying atmosphere.

But to answer your question...Pic related. Fucking abysmal movie. Complete trash. But a 10/10 scare scene (only borderline Jump Scare, I'll concede).

I love how in the credits it shows that the killer was played by like 4 different actors.
>>
>>62651835

Like most Stephen King films, the first 75% of the movie is good, but it falls apart at the end. Still, it's pretty worth it.

I feel like Stephen sometimes tries so hard for us to care about that characters he's going to kill, but often times he just fails.

The Mist did a pretty good job making me care about the old couple.

>>62651949

Fuck that movie...

Like, it sucks as a movie overall, but it does what I think more movies should do: Silent jump scares. Not something popping onto your screen or a loud noise to scare you.

Someone or something that the audience can see but the characters on screen can't. Because in the middle of the night, those are gonna be monsters you think about. The ones hiding and attacking when you AREN'T looking.

I'm not sure why that move would make it better. I find the meticulous, obsessive compilation of detail in Zodiac integral to the movie's brilliance as it makes the viewer become much like the investigators in the movie. I found the search in Zodiac made me more fascinated with the case than Memories of Murder did, but I think the movies have different aims in that regard. Anyway, both are fucking great movies, two of the best of the last decade easily.

There isn't a "design" that can be scary any more. You can add as much blood or gore as you want, it doesn't make it scary.

A spooky statue that follows Super Mario's Boo rules is pretty creepy I guess.

It makes it better because he can write his characters and plot to theme and create interesting set pieces and scenes based around what would work as a film, rather than having to be obedient to details. Of course, you're right in that Memories Of Murder essentially sits in the thriller genre while Zodiac is perhaps better described as a docu-drama.
>>
>>62652246
During the time, not as many horror movies like it existed and so many people saw it. People of our generation are much desensitized with other horror films that the Exorcist is pretty easy, though entertaining.

For them? It was a terror they hadn't experienced. Plus, a lot more people were far more religious during that time.

Ah I see what you mean. Yeah I think Memories of Murder is probably more emotionally resonant but I think the underlying idea of the desperate search for detail leading to nothing subbing in for the desperate search for meaning in life when all you're doing is circling around an unknowable abyss is more thematically resonant. Wow now I really just want to sit down and watch both of these movies back-to-back.

If anyone ever pulls a prank on me with a replication of that scene, they will probably be killed before they get the chance to reveal it to just be a prank.

Kind of hard to be scared when nothing on screen seems real and reminds you of tween emo art. Soz brah.

Complaining about inappropriate and bad art and production design is no different to complaining about bad cinematography or acting.

(and Babadook certainly had some top tier bad acting to boot)

Exactly.

They put an outsize head sculpt of the young actress on some older dudes body (guess it would be illegal to use a boy), in an attempt to maintain the correct scale of a younger person's body and head.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) the attempt didn't quite make it, and looks really weird and creepy. Combined with the uncanny valley effect of the immobile mask, it's so wrong to the viewer's eye it tends to scare the shit out of them on the first viewing.

All this trouble just to give her a dick...they could've just used a prosthetic dong...

I always interpreted the weird gait as her initially wanting to get down low so she can sprint at him at full force, but then realises he can see her, so she decides to (unsuccessfully) hide her intentions by only walking slowly pretending to not be a threat. It's the kind of thing that I interpret in my nightmares all the time - something incredibly hostile will slip up and make a mistake, reveal its motives to me and then continue acting as if I had not seen it, causing me to panic in sheer terror where both of us are thinking "did he just see that?"

the one example I can think of is a dream where I was in a room full of paintings and the paintings where alive and all talking to each other but went silent when I walked in the room and I met eyes with one and obviously saw him move, but then both of us acted like I hadn't seen it and there is a pregnant pause where both of us figure out whether to fight/flight
>>
>>62653467

You know EXACTLY how the dream goes down, and you slowly realize whats going on and you can't fight it, like a repeating nightmare. You just know something horrifying is going to pop out behind that dumpster and there is nothing you can do.

Predator never freaked me out as a kid. Guess I just thought he was cool looking. Now the idea of being stalked by something you couldn't see, killed before you knew it was there, and have your skull used as a trophy. That's a little unsettling.

Although they never really retconned why it set off its personal nuke on Arnold, guess even for a race of honorable hunters there are just some assholes out there that pull the link cable right as their pokemon is about to lose.

Samara's pretty great.

The first time I saw that film I physically recoiled from the television the closer the film got to showing her face. It was like she was looking at ME.

Now I just find her adorable.

>>62651355
Wouldn't watch the movie for years because of those guys. I got the DVD as a gift for whatever reasons and I couldn't have it in my room because I would look up from shit and see them staring at me. Love the movie now though.

The Ugly is somewhat underrated, though there are rather elements in it for a great film than it necessarily being that great, similar to Event Horizon.

>>
>>62656049
>>62656083
I hope they don't. To be honest, the movie is awful save for that twist. It is a pretty crappy slasher flick. I mean, one of the kills had her trapping a boy in a bathroom stall and dropping a beehive in it.

Granted, Hollywood will do anything in the attempt to make money, but the movie does not need to be remade. The twist is the only redeeming quality.

The original TV adaptation of The Woman In Black was on TV at around Christmas time when I was 7 years old. It looks like shit now but back then this scene fucking terrified me. Probably the first time I can remember being scared absolutely shitless by something I saw on TV. The second time was the scene in Aliens when the chestburster erupts from the woman cocooned on the wall - that hairs standing on end, fight-or-flight feeling.

Nah, but I think exposure to this sort of thing when you're really young and trying to rationalise it (it's just an actor is make-up) kinda ruins your ability to be scared when you get older. I've been creeped out by horror films now and caught out by jump scares but nothing has terrified me like that shitty low budget scene from when I was seven. The closest was maybe a few scenes in Mama.

When I was a kid, I saw Predator 2 before I saw Predator 1. I was terrified of horror movies, but through Predator 2, I learned about how the Predator works and how they have a code (not killing children, not hunting anyone weaker than them).

From that point, I found Predators to be totally cool.

>inappropriate and bad art and production design

Not the other anon, but you sound like the stupid one in that exchange. Dude, if you could even post a picture of one such t-shirt, I might at least concede that I could see how it might have distracted you while watching. But to call art/production design bad because it reminds you of some really specific shit that you can't adequately explain and which is apparently also really specific to you and your experience is incredibly retarded.
>>
>>62656811

Maybe that's why he was hunting alone in Predator 1 while every other Predator movie they're shown to hunt singly but operate as a pack. He had a bad reputation back on Yautja, and all the decent crews not to try hunting large prey with that cocksucker. Oh sure, he was handy with a plasmacaster but the second some puny pale meatbag started chucking chemically propelled metal at you, where was he? Hanging out a kilometer away up a tree and invisible, waiting for you to get scragged and to collect all the trophies for himself.

>Really specific shit

Yeah, 2000's Emo Tween shit inspired by Tim Burton and Gorey is so specific and unheard of.

I adequately explained, explicitly, what I was talking about. The fact that you and him are underage b& plebs explains why you probably liked the Babadaook.

>Unrealistic production design
>Really specific to you and your experience

Uh huh buddy.

If you are still confused about the idea that it ruins immersion to see a prop or monster design that is so clearly unrealistic and inspired by heavily stylized art works, I suggest killing yourself or going back to /v/.
>>
>>62657711

Furthermore, just to fucking highlight the problem;

The book from Babadook WAS reproduced and sold as merchandise by the production.
>>
>>62656991
Yeah it wasn't honorable at all in 1, and i think it works better that way. It wasn't some space samurai from a race of noble warriors who lived by the code of space bushido; it was just some asshole who hunted humans for fun.
