I've heard lawyers use the adjective when describing the kinds of sentences issued by a harsh judge. The word isn't "medieval", but it is something similar. It is a word that points back in time but functions as an adjective. For example, "The tax laws are so byzantine", where "byzantine" implies complexity and is derived from Byzantine architectural design that was complex and ornate in nature.
