I still believe that even in some of the biggest modern block busters and big event movies that try appeal to a mass audience are always some bits of clever artistic ideas, interesting choices of narrative strategies or discussworthy subtexts.
I read an interesting article about Star Wars Episode VII, in which the author argued that it was intended self-referential irony havin one of the main characters being a salvager, because the movie itself was full of allusions aka "old pieces" of the older movies.

He's portrayed as more full of himself than he was, he doesn't trust Finn, and he managed to make his escape on his own, dragging Finn along.

Isn't actually a traitor, but the First Order thinks he is. Being shot at by his former camarades, he's forced to abandon his plan of gaining Rey's trust and stealing the droid. As the story progresses he realizes he's on the wrong side, and he drops the shield of the Starkiller base (he had codes the whole time, but lied about it because he knew it would get a lot of soldiers killed). He tries his best not to kill stormtroopers, and doesn't manage to hurt Kylo in duel.

She's a bit colder and doesn't tell everybody about how she's waiting her family. Doesn't trust Finn and Han immediately. She escapes using the force somehow, but not by mind suggestion. Loses against Kylo.

Remove his mask latter in the movie, with Han. It's not revealed immediately in the movie he's Han son. When he's angry it's less tantrums, and more sudden bursts of raw force he can't control.

Poe let's Finn keep his jacket, in exchange for a kiss. Finn blushes and pickers up. Poe teases him and kisses his forhead and leaves.
Rey is fierce but clumsy. Says she takes care of herself but actually gets saved, like Luke did. Kyle beats her but then the planet crevice opens up and he stumbles away in anger. Rey humorously tries to use the force and persuade troopers, but fails considtently.
Han doesn't just let kylo kill him, instead rey walks out there, as kyle is about to end her, Han comes out and shoots kyle non fatally in the side. He shoots first. Then rey gets away, as Han is helping kyle get to safety, he kills han.
Snokes name is Dominous or Malum and doesn't appear in the film, only talked about with fear.
And get rid of the cgi shit. The monsters on the falcon, the space ships didn't feel real. Maz, snoke, it was shit.

Han's only interactions with Obi consisted of him calling the old man crazy for believing in the Force and I don't even think Leia met the guy in person.
Honoring an old time war hero who had a major impact on their family.

So...what's the state of the galaxy as of the beginning of TFA?
Is the Republic the dominant power in the galaxy? What is the "Resistance"? Did the Empire die out then re-emerge as the FO? Or did the war against the Empire never end? Is the FO just a bunch of fanatical remnants of the Empire, or do they have considerable power?
They could have explained this in the title crawl, but I guess that would have been too much reading for 2015's audiences.

I like to think of FO as the star wars version of ISIS.
The rebels won the galactic civil war.
After the Emperor was defeated they formed a new government called the New Republic.
Most of the galaxy automatically pledged allegiance to this new government.
Some portions of the galaxy chose to remain under the rule of imperial governors and chose to call themselves the First Order, perhaps to put distance between themselves and the tainted imperial name.
Peace is signed between New Republic and the First Order.
Some elements of the New Republic think that the First Order is up to no good and want to conduct covert operations across the border.
They are called the Resistance.
Turns out the First Order is up to no good and the Resistance was right.
In the next episode I imagine the Resistance will merge with the New Republic forces as full blown war between them and the First Order starts.
