Man this movie was awesome! I think they overused the CGI in parts, but I guess they are trying to be make it more modern. It harkens back to A New Hope, but in a totally original way. It's not a perfect film, and I still don't think it's better than any of the OT, but man the villians in this are amazing. I can't wait for the sequel!

I remember the response being positively lukewarm amongst my classmates who were Star Wars fans. Some critics had already called the film bad before it was released, so most of us were happy to find it was pretty good/okay. Yes, it repeated ANH but we all assumed it was building up to something. We were wrong.
Granted, I was only a freshman in high school, but I don't remember anyone calling it the biggest disappointment in their lives until later.
I know it's been said before, but this moviesucked.
Unlike the original trilogy, the pacing was really rushed, camera jerky, action meh, characters were underdeveloped, and everything felt rather soul-less. For example: the scene where Han Solo is on the catwalk. It was supposed to be a highly emotional and moment in the saga, but the way it was executed made it completely non-moving. They mourn him for 10 seconds, then move on.
All of the character/plot development from ESB and ROTJ, gone. Leia is obsessed with war again, not able to care about anything else. The wrinkly old lady somehow has Luke's first lightsaber despite it falling into the Cloud City shaft. Leia and Han have completely failed as parents, but we don't get to see why. Luke went into hiding for some reason and had his new Jedi Order (predictably) destroyed, but again, we didn't get to see the re-building or any of the interesting stuff.
J.J. Abrams fucking sucks. He's like Michael Bay with a touch of sentimentality and "gee whiz"ness (see Super8).

Luke sure bounces back fast from seeing his Aunt and Uncle burned alive and turned into skeletons. You'd think this would have a huge emotional impact on a person, but not Luke Skywalker -- he's cracking jokes with Han just a few scenes later, it's like he doesn't even care.
