Watching the original 3 and heres my theory. Han Solo saved Luke 2x. Once when he almost froze to death on Hoth and the other when Luke fought Vader and was hanging for dear life. Luke has saved Han from the carbonite freezer(similar to Han saving Luke from freezing on Hoth). So in SWTFA Han is falling down and its assumed hes dead. Leia is seen crying but that could also be because she thinks Kylo cant be saved. I think Luke saved Han somehow and Han was also on that island at the end.

I saw some HEAVY south korean movie influences in The Martian. Most notably from the movie Castaway on the Moon. In Castaway on the Moon, a guy gets stranded on an island and has to figure out how to grow his own wheat. In the Martian, Matt Damon has to figure out how to make potatoes.
